Kate Martin and Gabby Marshall have announced their return for next season…

It looks like she got a butt chewing after being pulled. Not sure she is a great fit ?
Noticed that too. I wouldn’t be surprised if she transfers. Obviously would love her to stay but I just don’t think she is the aggressor that the staff wants her to be.

What are Feuerbach's strengths?

Not to trash the kid, but what I saw before the injury and her time at ISU, I don't see her getting significant minutes.

I missed that! I watched the game after the fact and fast forwarded thru quite a bit.
It definitely looked like some serious coaching going on. O'Grady's body language (and the people around her) didn't have me super concerned about it, plus if anyone has some benefit of the doubt on something like this it's Bluder, but it was still a "whoa" moment.

Just realized no one has mentioned how O’grady got minutes early in the Nebraska game. That was not on my bingo card. In this game and the game before, she looked good on the floor. It was nice to see and gave me some hope that she still has a bright future with us.
So I only got to watch the game beginning in the third quarter (my daughter was born on Thursday and we came home on Saturday during the first half), but that was one of my big takeaways. I saw O'Grady was in and was worried initially that Czinano got hurt.

I'm encouraged by O'Grady's playing time recently. She seems to have reestablished herself as the backup 5 (not including Stuelke) and I think that means there's a good chance that she starts next year at the 5.

I know the coaches have been hard on her this year, but I think they are trying to get her to fight to realize her potential. O'Grady can be a huge difference-maker defensively and on the glass. If she improves in the low-post we're in a really good spot.

I am with you and not to trash the young lady. But not sure what her strengths are on the court. She seems a bit frail and has not displayed good handles and/or shooting ability. Maybe defense? Hopefully she will come back from the injury and settle in.

I think she has a lot of potential but does not appear to be overly motivated. Too much watching on the court.

I have unsuccessfully asked twice now but if anyone knows of Goodman/Wetering’s other offers out of HS, I’d love to know. I’ve googled as well and haven’t found anything. I’d assume they were offered by Drake and UNI, what about ISU?
From Wetering's commitment:
“When July was over, we got a lot of phone calls on her — and Iowa stepped up,” Attack coach Randy Mauro said. “She made a visit, and Iowa offered. And I know a lot of other schools were getting ready to offer. Heard from a lot of schools, a lot of coaches who loved her, wanted to get her on campus, wanted to offer — but I think her first love has always been Iowa.”

Leads me to believe that she was a bit of a late bloomer in the AAU scene so didn't get many early offers. But would have racked up more offers if she hadn't committed to Iowa relatively early. I believe her boyfriend runs track for Iowa so it's hard to see her leaving but who knows.

From Goodman's commitment:
"Sharon Goodman, who led Crestwood to an unbeaten girls' basketball season and a Class 3A state championship, committed to the Hawkeyes late Saturday night. 'It's really exciting,' Goodman said in a phone interview Sunday afternoon. 'I've been hearing from them since after the state tournament by freshman year. Then they offered me on New Year's Eve, and I thought, 'Wow, they must really see something in me.' Goodman picked the Hawkeyes over Iowa State and Drake."

Has it been officially confirmed that Davis is returning? I know that when she transferred in, it was mentioned she wanted to stay two years. But it strikes me as odd that there hasn't an official announcement today because she is a senior and would be out of eligibility under normal circumstances.

Assuming Davis returns, the 2023-24 depth chart is as follows:

Clark/Davis/Kennise Johnson-Etienne
Marshall/McCabe/Feuerbach
Martin/Affolter/Wetering
Stuelke/Gyamfi/Ava Jones
O'Grady/Ediger/Goodman

3 players deep at every position and no room for more transfers or commits unless someone transfers out.

It has been said that we will have a logjam at the 4/5, but I would argue the bigger log jam is at the 2/3.
Yea, not really a logjam at the 4. We don't know a thing about Gyamfi at this point and Ava, (god bless her soul) will not be near ready to compete next season. And no, it would surprise me at all of we lose someone or two to transfer with this news. I've said this before with the men and the football team, but bringing back a good player for a ONE year curtain call, and risking a transfer of a player with three years is risky business. Hopefully we don't lose someone like McCabe who could be a really good player in a year or two.

McCabe and Clark seem like good friends to me. Hard to imagine her leaving. The team loves her to death from the way they cheer when she's hit her shots. That's gotta feel good...
I would look at the out-of-state Top 100 kids as potential transfers, so Ediger and McCabe.
Affolter is also an out-of-state Top 100 recruit. edit: Also O'Grady and Feuerbach...

Congrats Braydon!

If you check out my lengthy comment above, you’ll see I generally share these concerns. However, this new development warrants a couple of points:

1) It may be that Bluder does not anticipate any bench players being able to replicate what Marshall and Martin bring to the table at the 2 and 3 next season. You have to think this is at least partly true. Perhaps she doesn’t see McCabe developing on D or Affolter improving at the 3.

Also, perhaps she doesn’t want to bank on Feuerbach recovering quickly enough to become an impact player next year. It’s become more common than not for recovery to take closer to 18 months than 12, I’d say.

2) It’s also possible Bluder anticipates someone will transfer. My guesses would be Edigar and O’Grady are the biggest risks.

3) Both could be true. If #1 is true, Bluder may be okay with bringing back vets, while flat out risking reserves transferring (and maybe it makes sense for them, if they’re never going to be able to find their spot in the system).

With the portal, this isn’t as scary of a prospect. I can’t help but wonder if Bluder thinks that is the best path to compete for a one-seed again (as opposed to say, settling for a 4 or 5 seed with our current reserves).
I think another possibility is that we'll see a more fluid lineup. Martin could potentially start at the 4 and Gabbie could play both the 2 and 3 position. We don't know know where Fuerbach will be in terms of her recovery. Given how Bluder has treated playing time for Goodman/Wettering I suspect her minutes to be limited next season.

I could foresee a lineup of
Clark/Davis
Marshall/Davis/McCabe/Fuerbach
Affolter/Marshall/Fuerbach/Gyamfi
Martin/Wettering/Stuelke/Gyamfi/O'Grady
Stuelke/O'Grady/Goodman

I don't anticipate the staff pursuing anyone in the transfer portal unless someone on the team has expressed interest in leaving or a once in a lifetime player with high Iowa interest becomes available. There are so many players on this team who just really love being Hawkeyes so it's hard to see anyone leaving. However, it may slow their development somewhat by not seeing a larger increase in minutes.

I'm sure that Marshall/Martin had already discussed their return with the team prior to deciding to come back. Everyone is still likely to see increased minutes with Warnock/Czinano leaving. Gyamfi also would still have an option to redshirt which I think would be in her best interest as far as minutes available. She would certainly have a much larger opportunity after sitting a year.

I think Bluder is learning that with the exception of Clark, she has to go to her bench more. I think the fact that the bench is seeing more minutes is one of the main reasons for the much improved defense this year (along with better rebounding).

I think we lose 1 or 2 players to the portal. O'Grady is the obvious one because she seems to be struggling with the role they want her to play but if she is our starting center and nobody transfers out is it possible we go the nil route and get a walk on? With the popularity of Iowa women's ball i had considered it. Not sure if it's realistic though.
I saw one time in the second half when the team was in a huddle that Jan was talking to Addie the whole time. Walked back to the bench talking to her, and got down really close to her face talking. Then Lisa walked over to her and got in her face and was very animated. The players around Addie looked uncomfortable. But she did go back in the game later.

I hope Bluder really helps her to become as good as she can be. She is talented and a sweet kid from what i hear.

I remember when Pat Summitt changed her coaching style. Maybe Bluder does with Addie.

Was this on tv or in person? I’m tempted to rewatch…

Thank you!

It seems Goodman could probably start Day 1 at ISU, no? Interesting.

Athleticism, quickness to the ball, fearless. Defense. These are her relative strengths vis-a-vis an under athletic Hawkeye team. Iowa has only 2 rotation players this year who are quick to the ball (Stuelke and Clark), and only 1 who is quick to the floor on a 50-50 ball (Stuelke). Kylie is a plus factor in both of these categories. Can contribute as a driver and transition scorer, though certainly needs to work on becoming a more consistent shooter.

The K-State and N.C. State games this season are exactly the types of games where Kylie could have helped.

I would agree with this. Lisa has to know about one or two reserves likely leaving. She wouldn't leave herself without options, having shown that she is more open to the transfer portal now. She obviously wants to maximize the team's chances as long as Caitlin Clark is here.

I could see Sharon Goodman hanging it up. She seems to have lost all mobility on the court. Wetering seems like another good possibility to find her niche elsewhere. Ediger has said she really likes her DEI major at Iowa. I don't see anyone else wanting to leave from my outside perspective.

I would also say that Gabby may not be guaranteed a starting spot next year. She may be coming back with the understanding that she may have to compete with Kylie and Taylor for playing time.
I found no major at iowa in DEI. Plenty of University departments on it, but no major.

She may officially be Interdepartmental Studies, where you can create your own major. I actually worked in CLAS after graduating supporting those students / advisors.

And yes, Edigar seems to absolutely love everything about her major, the culture, and the staff. When asked about why she chose Iowa, she says “100% the staff and what they stand for.” If she leaves for more playing time, I can’t blame her, but I do think it would be a tough decision for her.

I think Molly coming from Michigan has also been a boost for her, they traveled home together once and she calls her a “little gremlin” (lol) on social media so they seem to have hit it off.
Couldn't find any info on Goodman but Iowa was Wetering's only offer. She committed as a sophomore so no one really had a chance to get involved.

In related news, Gyamfi, O’Grady, McCabe, Affolter, Davis, Clark, Feuerbach and Edigar are all very happy that Marshall and Martin are returning (according to their Instagram stories — especially Edigar and Feuerbach FWIW).

I do not see Goodman leaving. I disagree that she has lost all mobility. She is a step slower running the court but hasn't lost any agility. I think she will eventually return to form and be a solid backup in the post.

She was the best ball handler not named Clark last year also. She brings a lot of versatility and could realistically play 1-4. We'll have to see how she returns after the injury.

She would have been the first woman off the bench this year for sure (at least til Stuelke came along). She would certainly be in the rotation with Davis, Affolter, Stuelke.

Sometimes having great friends and teammates is more important than playing time. Bluder has said time and again that this team is family and everyone has been very unselfish.

Supposedly Martin is Clarks besty on the team, so not surprising that she is returning.

With both Monica and Warnock gone next year I see a middle of the pack team. Was hoping to see Lisa use the portal this off season but of course if no player leaves that is off the table. I find it hard to believe that some reserves with a future of minimal playing time would remain happy sitting on the bench. Clark is once in a lifetime player for Iowa and I was hoping for a championship level roster for her fourth collegiate year.

The team is not going to be terribly different next year. Hannah will likely become the starting 4 or 5 and she has the potential to be a superstar with more minutes. If she starts at the 5, I could see Martin starting at the 4.

If Hannah starts at the 4, O'Grady/Goodman both have the potential to make a leap forward if they end up starting at the five next year. Both were solid as freshman in backup roles. There are a number of back up options available.

Monica is great offensively but has never been a great defender. Warnock and Martin are very similar in skill set with the exception that Warnock attempts more shots. I could see Martin being more aggressive if called upon to play the 4 next year. She has already proven her ability to get to the rim and is taking more three point shots this season.

What I predict as I said in an earlier post is a more fluid lineup with players shifting to a position based on what personnel are on the floor. This provides an opportunity to create more mismatches on both sides of the ball.

I think with the exception of Clark we'll see more rotating players in/out of the game. Better rotations this year have for the most part lead to an improved defense. I am optimistic for the rest of the season as well as for strong play to carry over into next season.

Have not rewatched the game the game but was told she was in great position to get a rebound but didn’t block out and got out hustled for the ball. Could be more to it but Lisa surely was upset. Old coach cliche rebounding is about effort

I don’t know that we’ll have a huge drop off. I think Martin should be able to step up and into Warnock’s role easily. She shoots from 3 at basically the same rate and has a better handle on the ball. Also a better facilitator.

We will all miss Monika but we don’t have a rim defender and she is average at rebounding. She is an asset against typical teams but is a major liability against elite teams (the same can be said of Warnock). UConn and IU neutralized her rather easily. Stuelke, Edigar and O’Grady all have more upside than Mon outside the low post. And tbh if Jensen could turn a 3 star recruit with no other P5 offers into the most efficient post in the country, I think she can do something interesting with those 3 (as well as Goodman).

Meanwhile Feuerbach, Affolter, Gyamfi and McCabe should do nothing if not at least give us more depth and options at the 2/3. Affolter has shown great progress this year, as did Feuerbach last year. There will be some bumps but that will be the case any year we graduate 2-3 starters. Bringing Martin and Marshall back also means our 3 best defenders return.

I think we will still at minimum be a Sweet 16 caliber team. If Stuelke and just one other player find their groove next year, we could very well be better than we are this year. Meaning a similar if not higher ceiling and a higher floor as well.

At their age (and now at my age), I could do nothing as well as any of them play basketball.

I think one player will step up her game next year and surprise me. Not Stuelke because I expect greatness. Maybe Marshall finds her shot. Maybe someone on the bench blossoms into a great sixth player. Someone will surprise me next year.

Wish I had the optimism some of you guys do and certainly hope you’re right.

Tbh Marshall has found her shot already. She isn’t taking many tho. I think it’s at Bluder’s direction.

Marshall is 7/9 from deep over the last five games. Still under 30% for the season after some really tough games early but she is historically much better than the 24% she was shooting on the year before this latest resurgence.

It happens to shooters sometimes. The worst thing they can do is stop shooting.
