2 outstanding players in the BigTen go undrafted (same goes for Wadley) but you’re talking about 2 markee players in Jackson who broke a ton of Northwestern’s records rushing .. then we all know about JT.. I know the measurements and speed agility bullshit .. like Jewell is going to prove productivity and leadership is going to rule over the NFL combine crap.. and Wadley? I am really disappointed that no one picked him up in the draft .. I think he signed a free agency with the Titans though.. he’s going to be extremely valuable to some team as a 3rd back and special teamer!

As an OSU fan it doesn't surprise me JT went undrafted. His throwing accuracy was never the same after he broke his ankle against Michigan his redshirt freshman year. He struggles on ball placement even on the short passes. Only completed 28% of passes longer than 21 yards this season. Will make a fine coach once his playing days are over.

What position does J.T. play in nfl? Not QB.

Correct. Very productive college player does not equal NFL player. Especially for a guy like Barrett, who was surrounded by better talent on his team than the opponent had in nearly every game he played. Nothing about his throwing accuracy says NFL player.

Jackson just wasn't all that fast. Very good college back. Durable and shifty enough. That and the de-valuing of RB's in the NFL game and that's why he dropped to the 7th round.

I’ve never liked JT. Always struck me as a phony. I’ll never understand Urban’s affection for him.

This will get some comments, but I think his success was due to the talent around him.

With all due respect..There is nothing phony about Joe Thomas Barrett. That kid gave everything he had to his team and to OSU. He played to the best of his abilities and while he was really never the same after he broke his ankle against TTUN, no one can question his heart and his leadership. He will be missed by Buckeye Nation and yes he had a lot of talent around him, but those running backs didn't hand to ball off to themselves and the receivers didn't pass the ball to themselves...As a true Buckeye fan, I was with JT when he had good games and still a fan when he had bad games(even the Iowa game last year, I witnessed that game first hand, the hospital wave is really cool by the way).

The reason Urban had such an affection for JT was because Urban likes his QB's to be leaders first(example Tim Tebow) and to a fault Urban will sometimes ignore his QB's shortcomings if that player is the unquestioned leader of the team. JT Barrett was a three time captain at Ohio State, so that's why he was Urban's Ride or Die.

I appreciate your response Buck. In fact, I appreciated it very much and it did temper my thoughts a little. When you're king of the mountain, some of us don't view you like we should. I've just never liked JT and I don't know why.

Thanks for your excellent response. :rolleyes:

I was less surprised JT wasn't drafted than I was that he signed a 3 year FA deal today.

Multi-year UFA deals are not unheard of. Still doesn't mean the player gets paid. He has to make the roster to get NFL money.

This.

1) no such thing as a guaranteed contract in the nfl

2) someone can correct if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure practice squad salary is fixed across the league

Correct. That's why making the active roster is such a huge deal as opposed to the practice squad. The practice squad minimum salary is $6,300 per week. I believe the team can choose to pay the player more than that, but not required to. At 17 weeks (including bye week), that is a bit more than $100k if the player was on a practice squad the whole year. Good coin for most Americans, but you aren't making retirement money being on a practice squad for a couple years.

I believe also there is a limit to how long a player can be on the practice squad without being on the roster. I read the rules on the practice squad one time and recall two or three details that seemed unexpected...at least to me.

In 2016, the salary was $7200 per week. It probably inches up annually.

Here is a good link with a summation of practice squad rules:

https://www.ninersnation.com/2017/9...ad-salary-rules-eligibility-49ers-roster-cuts

How many players on the practice squad?
10 - It was previously 8, but in 2014, the NFL changed it to 10 for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. They have extended the rule.

How is a player eligible for the practice squad?
In order to be eligible for the practice squad, players must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Have no prior Accrued Seasons in the NFL (An accrued season is six or more games on the active roster);
  • Have one prior Accrued Season in which the player was on the 46-man active roster for no more than 8 games;
  • Each club will be permitted to sign a maximum of 4 Practice Squad players who have earned no more than 2 accrued seasons of free agency credit;
  • If served two seasons on a practice squad, are eligible for a third season only if the team has at least 53 players on its active/inactive list for the duration of that player's employment.
  • A player has served one season on the practice squad if he is on the practice squad for at least 6 games. The rule previously required 3 games on the practice squad roster.
Salary
Players on the practice squad can earn a minimum of $7,200 per week in 2016. Teams are allowed to pay a player a higher salary than the minimum, and this often happens if another team comes sniffing around a player. All practice squad salaries are counted under the team's salary cap.

Player rights
While on a practice squad, a player is paid by that particular team. However, the player has the right to sign with another team's 53-man roster. The one exception to this is that the player may not sign a contract with his team's next opponent after 1 p.m. PT six days preceding the game (10 days preceding in bye weeks). A player cannot sign a practice squad contract with one team and then leave to sign a practice squad contract with another team, unless the first team has released said player.

Promotion
If a player signs with another team's 53-man roster, or is promoted to his own team's 53-man roster, the player must be paid for at least 3 weeks of at least league minimum salary. They can be released before the 3 weeks is up, but they still have to be paid.

There is one exception to this called the Contagious Disease Addendum, which was first added in June 2010 in a side letter agreement to the last CBA. This states that if a player is promoted from the practice squad for a game because a club was given a roster exemption due to confirmed or suspected cases of contagious disease among its players, the player remains on his practice squad contract, but will be paid 1/17 of the league minimum salary. After the game he will be returned to the practice squad without having to clear waivers.
