Kirk Cousins leaving Minnesota?

You guys will have to give up at least a second round pick to move up for JJ McCarthy. Better hope he's the real deal.
I'd rather take Penix or Daniels.

But yes I have a sneaking suspicion they're locked on McCarthy.........another f***ing game manager.

I honestly don’t know how to evaluate McCarthy. Due to the offense they ran, he simply wasn’t asked to do much; as they leaned on the running game. Whether that’s due to his limitations or just relying on the dominant run game, idk.

McCarthy will be an Eli Manning clone..........post Super Bowl wins.

I have no idea - he seems to have all the physical tools, but because of the offense they ran, I don’t know if he can read a defense, or so much of what else nfl teams want from QBs.
Maybe he can be like some other Michigan QB that didn’t really have the greatest numbers in college but did pretty well in the nfl.
As for me though: I’m not sold on McCarthy at all. To me he seems like a tiny bit better version of Christian ponder

Umm you won't get Daniels. He's likely going 2 to the Commanders. I highly doubt they would trade that spot no matter what you offered.

The Vikings will have to either trade up for JJ or get Nix or Penix way higher than they are projected to go. Or kick the can to next year.

Well then tell the Commanders to f*** themselves and take the worst QB in the draft or don't take a QB at all........

That $10 million quarterback with money to keep the o-line, receivers, and add Aaron Jones is looking pretty good.
It was savvy business by the Vikings for sure.

After the season, though, when the Vikings have to inevitably address what to do with Darnold, obviously you have to take the entire season's body of work into account. But right now, if I'm the Vikings, regardless of how the rest of the season plays out, I'm starting with an offer of $35 million, with the mutual understanding that rosters win Super Bowls and they, as of right now prior to giving this new hypothetical contract, are in an amazing position cap-wise to build their roster.

They also should understand that the Vikings will need to replace guys who either 100% won't be around next year or more than likely won't either because of age or contract.

This is where you find out if Darnold is really just another Kirk Cousins or if he's truly about helping the franchise build a consistent winner.

I've seen some outlets saying Darnold could be worth $50 million now on the market. If that's what his agent argues for, and I'm Sam, I tell my agent

If Sam concurs and argues for that money, then if I'm Kwesi, their GM, I respectfully decline, and let Sam go make his money elsewhere and take his chances with another roster and coach like the Raiders or the Titans or whoever. We'll move on to the JJ era.

$35 million still leaves the team with room on the cap to make the moves they were hoping to make to round out this roster.

$50+ million tosses those plans into the fire and sends the team back to playing more money ball.

The NFL and teams/GMs around the league absolutely want the Vikings to botch their cap space opportunity, because they don't want the Vikings to become a top tier consistent team again like they were in the '70s.

The Vikings know this, though, unlike with previous regimes in this franchise that had their heads in the sand or up their ass.

I think the only way this decision becomes truly difficult is if the Vikings win the Super Bowl, and I'm okay with that outcome. ;)

I would love to believe that Darnold would take less money to stay with the Vikings in an ideal situation for him and allow the Vikings to continue to build a great team. In this day and age, I just don't believe that a franchise quarterback will do that. Cousins was a greedy bastard who never accomplished much, but he helped set the standard for quarterbacks getting paid team crippling amounts at the expense of team success.

Sam Darnold’s success is due to the quality of the o-line, the receivers, and the coaching. I genuinely believe you could put any upper tier backup in there and achieve great results.

Jefferson draws Larry Fitzgerald levels of attention. The o-line is too good to give up immediately pressure. If you want to play dime or high safeties with linebackers in coverage, Aaron Jones and Cam Akers will gash you.

With how the cap has exploded those monster salaries aren’t nearly as crippling as they once were.

I’m very curious to see what the Vikings do with Darnold, with McCarthy coming back healthy next year.

That's without Christian Darrisaw no less. I agree, I think if Darnold leaves, someone will be successful at QB next year. Could even be Daniel Jones. More likely JJ McCarthy. The Vikings will be fine. I'd be happiest if it was Darnold on a "this is the best spot for me" discount, but won't hold my breath on that.

100% As a long time Viking fan i totally agree. Great QB coach, excellent receivers, etc. If he wants to chase 50 million show him the door. I was thinking 30 million but 35 would still be cool. Bynum, murphy and most of the secondary are FA or possible retirement(Smith). With Mccarthey on sidelines paying 50 million to a guy with ONE good season would be dumb Imo

I agree with everything you've written here. And, if Sam can get $50 million from another team, take the money and good luck to you. One thing O'Connell has been able to show is that he can make QB's produce. I think there won't be a short list of high upside QB's willing to come to Minnesota to try to get their career back on track given O'Connell's record of resurrecting QB's careers. I think Sam understands this and will be willing to take less money to play on a competitive team. Not because that's who he is (he might be, I don't know), but because he has been on teams with poor coaching and support and it nearly tanked his career. 4 or 5 more years producing like this one puts him in Hall of Fame discussions. If I were him, I'd take the $35 million deal, but get it for like 3 years. Then in 3, I'd ask for more, or at least a contract that lasts until the end of my career. I stay there as long as Justin Jefferson is there at the least. He alone will double your value as a QB.

And I don't think the necessity is there. I think it is safe to say that as long as the QB has some talent then O'Connell is going to be able to get the most from that QB. As long as this receiving core is in tact, that's really all you need. It is not irreplaceable. Justin Jefferson is irreplaceable. Not just with his skill, but his attitude. So many times you get receivers with his kind of talent but they tear up the locker room. Everything I've seen from him tells me he's a fun guy to be around and is a positive force in the locker room.
