Am I the only one questioning how it's possible for Kirk to routinely keep, promote, and give raises to some of the worst performing coaches in college football...BUT with his players, he holds a completely different standard? Any time a 20 year old kid messes up and does things that 20 year olds do, they are immediately sent to the dog house never to be seen again?
EXTREME LENIENCE FOR COACHING ERRORS
Kirk's loyalty to Jon Budmyer is legendary. The guy came in, failed, failed again, and failed again, yet each year at Iowa he's been promoted, given a raise, and praised in press conferences. Same with Kirk's son Brian, who managed to receive one promotion after the next despite having behavior problems and the offensive mind of a wet towel. The blind loyalty for Brian was so bad that the athletic director had to step in and fire him because accountability is not on Kirk's radar. George Barnett? Same thing. He's been at Iowa since 2021. He has coached 4 of the worst OLs in the Ferentz era and can't recruit. Somehow, the guy has a lifetime of job security under Ferentz who chooses to praise Barnett any time he's asked about the awful line play. And none of this even touches on Husch Blackwell's findings of bullying and racial bias in the program by the likes of Brian & Seth Wallace, who received zero punishment whatsoever for running kids out of the program.
EXTREME PUNISHMENT FOR PLAYER ERRORS
Now how does Kirk handle players who mess up even one time? Mind you, players are kids, most of them 19 or 20 years old, and not paid millions to be at Iowa like the adult coaches.
Caleb Brown emerged as Iowa's #1 receiver last year. He is a 4 star guy in a room full of 2 star kids, and is far and away the team's top WR on the roster. But Iowa's best WR made a mistake and got a DUI, his first offense, aas thousands of 20 year olds in Iowa do each year...and that alone drove him so far into Kirk's dog house that he's taken just 16 snaps in 5 games...on a team with zero even average WRs! It's one thing to punish a kid for a first mistake...it's quite another to banish him to hell never to be heard from again.
Adam Robinson, at 18, set Iowa's freshmen rushing record with 834 yards. While being a college kid one night he got charged with...gasp...marijuana possession, and was dismissed from the team. Clearly an 18 year old smoking pot in college is an unforgivable offense.
DJK, Iowa's all-time best receiver, who once graced the cover of Sports Illustrated during the best year of the Ferentz era (and played a huge role in Kirk getting yet another raise), was another casualty. He was an elite playmaker who would make elite plays...but in post game interviews, Kirk made sure to bash the kid because he didn't like how he dressed or that he wore an earring. He was eventually charged with possession of prescription pills...and just like that, 4 years of dedication to the Hawks (for ZERO NIL money) were thrown into the dumpster and Kirk disowned the kid like he was never part of the team. Sad, really.
Kirk is a bitter, rigid, terrified old man who holds such an obvious double standard that it's mind blowing how more people haven't caught wind of it. He treats his coaches like untouchable gods beyond reproach...while the kids that give up their lives and their bodies to play for Iowa and make him rich are as disposable as an empty soda can. It makes one wonder.
