Ferentz saw the benefit in having a non-regional recruit, like someone from Georgia, using the official visit in April because distance and logistics made it tough for them to take multiple trips.


At the same time, he still valued Midwestern recruits hopping in a car for an unofficial visit. It helps the staff gauge a prospect’s true interest in the Hawkeyes.


“We’re still thinking pretty much the same way,” Ferentz said in March. “We’d rather save that visit for the winter time, if possible. But we may make an exception if somebody can’t drive here.


“I think that’s where the real value is. But I’d rather have guys drive here unofficially — that kind of gives us a little better gauge, too, how interested they really are. How true their interest is.”

Well Kirk......not everyone d1 player comes from an upper class or middle class family.
This is Iowa not southern cali. I don't think many kids are thinking "I don't want to play for Iowa, but I'd love to get a free trip there"!
No wonder nebby gets kids from all over the country and we don't. We spend about $500k when they are spend over 1 mill. Invest some damn money.
