Largest Crowd of year (15,138); if you were there, how was the atmosphere?

Great crowd. Atmosphere was great. Need more Saturday games.

Agreed. But given that Saturday games aren't going to be the norm going forward, need to find a way to get the arena close to that atmosphere for the Sunday games and the weeknight games as well. It makes a difference. Not sure what the answer is. I saw lots of empty seats at the OSU home game last week, and Michigan too. Trend in college hoops.

The overall attendance trend is down in college basketball for several years, you are correct. I would think that same atmosphere to be possible for the early afternoon Sunday games also. will find out next week against Nebraska

The student section shots on TV showed a lame and unengaged crowd. Franamaniacs, they weren't.

But, at least they showed and cheered. I can't say that for myself. I'm a loser.

Glad the crowd was full and responsive. The kids deserve that.

IMO it is this. Traditional Saturday afternoon/evening games become an event not just a game. I can remember Thursday evening with an occasional Big Monday games were special. You could adjust your schedule, now with TV driving everything it is hard to get a grip on what times your team will play.

This is true for me. Saturday games are way easier for me attend than Sunday games are. I assume this is true for a lot of people like myself who have to travel a ways to get to Iowa City.

The Big Ten Network dictates the game days and
starting times. It is all about television revenue
which is the cash cow for the Big Ten Conference.
Those days are gone when half of your home games
were on Saturday nights.

I always assumed this, but i heard a decent argument in favor of Sunday games this week related to kids activities. I think the answer is probably a mix of Saturday afternoon, Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon.

if the game had been closer there would have been a little more volume...

went to the game with 4 HS coaches...one a Purdue guy ...we got to our seats with about 10 min before tip ..he was surprised of how small & empty the student section was..once the game started the student section filled in much better..pretty amazing how quick people can get in & seated with not much time left before tip.

it was a little funny watching the donor line (which is not all donor) ... waiting at halftime for the bicycle guys...

if its OK to drink before & during the game for some...then lets do it. first thing I would do is open beer stand(s) 30 min before each game to "everyone"...if an idiot gets out of hand..let the Whelan security handled it ...OH...wait...no let the I Cops handle it...easy pull & exit.

good game.

Who was the really tall dude beside Jok? He was at least 6 inches taller than Jok. Maybe that was Nunge, tho a pic heading said it was the Dubuque kid - Till or Tull....

The Hawkeye marketing dept needs to promote the shit out of these unconventional start times to get the college kids to go to the games. MUST invest in getting them there to support the team and create future Hawkeye fans/donors. The U needs to increase the number of Cambuses to get students to the game. If there are any walk ups after game time and tickets are available, they should be FREE. Free pizza for students. This is entertainment.... must entertain and come up with entertainment during breaks. Sorry, but the band doesn't count. Have raffles for some cool shit. Must be present to win.

If I'm a stud pg that can have my pick of any school I want. Why would I pick Iowa to play in front of lame crowds. I'm going to any one of the other BB schools to play in front of packed crowds. And that is what is holding Iowa back now.

Iowa ranked 19th last year in attendance in the country...so we are not the poorest of the poor. The crowd last night was not lame.

Tickets for students should be free for all sports....considering the amount of revenue the athletic dept receives from the BTN & staff/public sales.

Were you at the game last night? Crowd was far from lame. Lots of energy.

I was not referring to last nights game.. Talking about UNCONVENTIONAL starts like 6 pm and 8 pm days other than weekends. Last nights crowd was the best of the year. Too bad every game wasn't like that.

Roger that.

I think last night really proved how bad Iowa is hurt by the weird start times.

Other Big 10 teams have hundreds of thousands of fans within 30 minutes of their arena. Iowa has to pull from 1,2,3 hours away and longer. I only have to come from Davenport and those 6 pm weekday starts are a nightmare. Wouldn't be able to go at all if I was from Des Moines or Dubuque or many other places.

Looked good on tv. Some of the best crowds in last decade have been when we hosted a NIT game and there was no regular seating, but a large GA crowd that was excited to be there.

I know that is not going to be possible all the time but says to me that the "problem" with CHA is more about who comes & crowd placement than anything wrong with the arena.

Thursday nights and Saturday's were the norm. However, sometimes in the mid 80's we would be on CBS for a big game like Michigan

As TV /cable and the money involved got bigger, everything changed. Lets face it; we have to look at the schedule constantly because we never know what days of the week our 2 games will be; and sometimes we get surprised and find we are on a bye week =)

we need high speed rail along I-80 from Davenport to Council Bluffs, with just a few stops. How fun would that be?

Well they do give the students pretty sweet shirts etc. Last night shirt for the students was very nice. All they have to do is show ID and they are free.

What doesn't make sense to me is why the BTN has two or three alternate channels on Mediacom yet when they have games they broadcast the same game on all of them.

The 7pm start really helped. I was at the game and live 90 minutes from Iowa City.

When I walked into The Vine at 3:30PM and there was a line out the door, I knew it was going to be a good crowd. As someone else said, the crowd would have been louder had the score been closer.
