I’m only 45 so anything pre-Tom Davis was before my time.

What were the results the last time the Hawkeyes were highly ranked?

I’m having a hard time recalling when we were predicted to be top 10 material and actually performing to that by end of season

You're having a hard time recalling when we we're predicted top 10 material because Iowa has never ever been ranked that high since preseason ranking have been available. One can never remember something that has never happened! Of course that doesn't include the late 80's teams, but I don't recall Tom Davis's 1st team rated that high at the beginning of that season....

Incorrect. Going back to the beginning of Lute’s tenure we’ve been top 10 preseason ranked 7 times now, plus an additional 3 times at #11. Only once did we beat that ranking at the end of the year. Dropped 7 or fewer spots four times. Dropped drastically or completely out of the rankings four times.

2020 preseason #5

2001 preseason #9. Of course we crashed and burned hard that year to finish unranked.

1995 preseason #8 finished 21

1992 preseason #11 finished 13

1988 preseason #8 finished 14

1987 preseason #11 finished 17

1986 preseason #10 finished 6

1983 preseason #7 finished unranked

1982 preseason #11 finished unranked

1981 preseason #9 finished 16

Actually it looks like 1987 fits his criteria, Started ranked top 10 and finished 6th. So the answer is 33years ago......

The reason no one gives a $h!t at Iowa being rated top ten at the beginning of the season is that it's meaningless as nothing has been decided on the court. Iowa, for the most part has fallen flat on it's preverbal face all but 1 year, 1987 as you have kindly reminded us.
Yes, it's nice to be recognized as a possible contender for the national title but hopefully they can finish the deal and not collapse like so many other Iowa teams in the past. We'll see if this years hype is credible starting on the 24th!

Correct. And realize that when you are ranked pre-season Top 10 or 5, it's really a tight-rope that is being walked. 1 or 2 more losses means finishing in the Top 10 vs Top 20 and being considered a "failure." Personally, I think Iowa is way too high in Top 5, too much to prove. I'm not a hater, just don't see it from a team that was 20-11 and 11-9 last year. Same with Illinois being ranked that highly. Yes, both teams return a ton but the blue-bloods of college hoops replenish with elite level talent. Outside of Garza, Iowa does not have elite-level talent on the roster.

Fran has certainly challenged this team with the schedule. We will find out a lot about this team early in the season.

I was watching the Texas Tech and Syracuse games from last year, with Bohannon yesterday.
This is the year!
Elite inside presence, three elite outside shooters, and two solid assist guys. One can drive and kick whom also is a no look pass master, one is careful with the ball. Solid free throw shooting all across the team.

I worry that Garza may get into foul trouble more. There were many times that Kreiner and Pemsl held on to the lead while Garza was on the bench. I think Nunge can at least do that.

Agree that Jack Nunge needs to Step-up and be a very solid contributor, this season.
Jack doesn't have to be All Big 10, but he does need to contribute to the success of this
Hawkeye squad.

We'll score points for the reasons you mention. I mostly worry about whether we'll play sufficient defense to warrant the ranking.

The title of your post is a bit of a misnomer. It asks, when was the "last time Iowa lived up to expectations", but then you subsequently add the caveat of "when we were predicted to be top 10 material and actually performing to that by end of season".

Those are two significantly different things, mainly because the higher one is ranked preseason, the lower the likelihood of matching or exceeding that ranking at seasons end.

'87 was the most recent truly high point of Iowa b-ball. Only 2 losses in the regular season to teams not in the top 10 and both of those teams finished with 20 wins.
I remember quite well the crushing disappointment that was the loss to unlv in the elite 8.

Let's hope this team can surpass that tourney performance.

Pre-season ranking are notoriously ridiculous. Just look at last year's. But they always get some of the teams right. Let's hope we're one of them.

There are some safe choices in Gonzaga, Baylor, Virginia, Kansas and Duke.
We can already assume the big 10 won't have three teams in the top10 by the end of the season.
