LBJ's GREAT SOCIETY and American obesity?

Is that what Reagan tried to do? Hmmm, well, Trying to "bring back the 50's" includes the bigotry because the 50's was loaded with racial bigotry. That's probably why bigotry was present when he tried bringing it back. Leave the 50's in the mid-20th Century. The 50's were the 50's for many reasons. Mostly because they were from 1950 to 1959. If you're that fond of a time you never lived in, watch Back To The Future and pretend and then come back here and show how out-of-touch you remain on every issue.

I wasn't the only one who mentioned the 50s in this thread, but I was the only one you went after. I think you want to **** me in the ***, but for a reason different than Natural.

So approximately 15 years after LBJ's "Great Society" took root....you are blaming it for American's poor eating habits and smoking? Americans ate poorly long before The Great Society came along...they smoked, too. Fast foods and poot dietary choices are Landslide's fault?
Methinks there are plenty of reasons...methinks "The Great Society" as envisioned by LBJ is a very small reason.

I'm confused, or maybe you are. Where was I blaming LBJ or the "Great Society"?

I was blaming stuff that occurred 15 years later. HFCS, fast food and pre-packaged, over preserved, boxed meals all exploded in the late 70's and early 80's. People may have not been eating as they should before the 60's, but at least it was mainly home or restaurant cooked with mainly fresh/frozen ingredients and far fewer preservatives and additives. I guess maybe I should have said what's in the food and not the food itself, but the point remains that the rates of everything I mention started going up dramatically during the time frame I mentioned.

Fast food exploded 15 years after the Johnson administration? McDonalds was founded around 1952 IIRC. I understand why many are blaming food. It certainly plays a role. But who makes the food stamp crowd eat nothing but crap? Certainly no law mandates it. Lazy people making lazy choices is what is going on.

Click on this vvvv paragraph.

A new study suggests that under-exercising, rather than overeating, may be at the heart of America's obesity epidemic.

Researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine report a strong correlation between the rise in obesity and a striking drop in the amount of time Americans spend exercising when not at work over the last 22 years.

Their analysis uncovered no evidence that American's have increased their daily calorie count in the same time period.

Hmmm,

If, as has been reported, activity patterns have not changed much in the past decade,4,5 the rise in body weights must be caused by increased energy intake. Indeed, dietary intake surveys indicate a per capita increase of 200 kcal/d from 1977–19786 to 1994–1996,7 and the US food supply (total food produced, less exports, plus imports) now provides 500 kcal/d per capita more than in the 1970s.

And,

"Portion sizes varied by food source, with the largest being consumed at fast-food establishments and the smallest at restaurants," she said. "Between 1977 and 1996, portion sizes increased for salty snacks, desserts, soft drinks, fruit drinks, French fries, hamburgers, cheeseburgers and Mexican food."
Such increases were large, Nielsen said.
"The quantity of salty snacks increased by 93 calories or 0.6 ounces, soft drinks by 49 calories or 6.8 ounces, hamburgers by 97 calories or 1.3 ounces, French fries by 68 calories or 0.5 ounces and Mexican food by 133 calories, or 1.7 ounces," she said.
Both scholars and policymakers have discussed "supersizing" as a critical problem in the marketing of food by the fast-food sector, Popkin said.
"While our research did not exactly study ‘supersizing,’ it shows its impact is seen in the very large portion size increases in the past decade," he said.

And,

Every day, nearly one-third of U.S. children aged 4 to 19 eat fast food, which likely packs on about six extra pounds per child per year and increases the risk of obesity, a study of 6,212 youngsters found.

The numbers, though alarming, are not surprising since billions of dollars are spent each year on fast-food advertising directed at kids, said lead author Dr. David Ludwig, director of the obesity program at Children's Hospital Boston.

The findings suggest that fast-food consumption has increased fivefold among children since 1970, Ludwig said.

And,

OverTime.jpg

Notice that spike starting in the late 1970's and a leveling off in the late 1990's?

Fast food since the late 1970's wasn't what fast food in the 50's and 60's was. More people eat more of it and the portion sizes are FAR bigger than they used to be. When did value meals and supersized portions start? It wasn't in 1962. How many adults go into McDonalds and eat a single hamburger w/small fries and small soda these days?

I posted a thread on the documentary Fed Up (2014), currently on netflix that addresses obesity.

There are tons of fat people that eat less and exercise, but never lose weight, and it's because the low-fat, no-fat, diet stuff they are eating has more sugar in it than the no-fat-removed version.

Very interesting documentary, in it there was a freaking obese 6-month old! The culprit was not exercise, it was sugar in the formula.

1 tsp of sugar = 4 grams

recommended max is 6-9 tsps or 24-36 grams.

Look at your labels if you aren't losing weight and trying to.

Okay, I didn't read all of it. But I'm gonna conduct a little social science experiment and respond from an uninformed vantage-point to gain insight into what it is like to be a low information Obama voter.

Is it fair to say we could both find studies to support our own point of view?

"Yes."

Thank you ridiculously big government for giving us each that option. So how about we compromise. I'll agree that people make lazy food choices, if you'll agree that lethargy plays a role in the obesity epidemic. And both of these things have gotten worse since we instituted LBJs great society.

Are we good?

This. Anyone commenting in this topic needs to check out this documentary. We were duped for years into thinking low and non-fat food where the devil. Sugar is our enemy.

Correct, and starch is a sugar, meaning grain and potatoes are the same as candy.

Actually the absence of common sense is the enemy. I've seen all the documentaries. A small minority of people are stuck with chubby bodies because of genetics. That's not new info. The vast majority of fatties can help their situation with more exercise. Anyone who knows anything about health knows that exercise ACTUALLY SUPPRESSES APPETITE. Some tubbies will need to tweak their diet also. Obviously better dietary choices is something we can all do. But of all the factors, exercise and minimizing stress are the best predictors of health.

Not unless you're talking about french fries and potato chips.
Starches (complex carbs) are not the same thing as candy, nor any other simple carbohydrate. Processed carbohydrates definitely aren't healthy, but eating a balanced diet that includes brown rice, baked and sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and whole grains isn't at all like downing a jolly rancher or a can of soda. Your body breaks down starches into glucose, but the process by which it does this, and then stores the glycogen (vs limiting the production of glucagon via simple sugars) is the important difference.

If your calories come from foods that are high in processed sugars with very little protein it has been proven that you won't lose the weight no matter how much you exercise. You eat right(lots of healthy protein and carbs only from fruits and veggies)and drink a lot of water you won't even have to exercise that much to lose weight. Why watch the documentaries if you know that you are right in that it's all about exercise?

In the end not many are blaming potatoes on anything. The real culprit is bread, pasta, tortillas etc that are all packed with processed sugar. Stay away from the middle of the store people.

I'm not an Obama voter, but I'll agree to the bolded. My biggest point is to when it started, that it wasn't a direct result of the Great Society, much more that which of two big ills is the biggest cause.

This times a billion. Eats meats and other animal products in moderation and eat lots of fresh fruits. veggies, legumes, nuts and seeds and you'll be extremely healthy. Eats lots of food with lots of processing and preservatives, you'll gain weight and be generally unhealthy.

To answer your question, first the homework, then the conclusion. BTW, I'm glad you think people should eat better. I don't think there is anything unreasonable with that idea.

Let me ask you a friendly question: "When someone gets their EBT card, should we limit the type of food they can consume to healthy choices?"

True, but I think the point was at the end, it still counts towards your daily max sugar intake of 24-36 grams (6-9 tsps), and eating white bread, pasta, rice, etc., needs to be limited to not surpass that daily max.

Some cereal and orange juice for breakfast would put you over the daily max sugar intake for the day.

I vote yes. BTW, do they still have government cheese programs?

I vote yes.

Seconded. Heck, I'd be OK with upping the amount a bit to go along with it. If you can get people who are on limited budgets and gov't health care (regardless of why they are there) to eat better and be healthier, you'll easily save that money on the other end by having far lower medical costs.

If we give them free condoms should we choose who they sleep with? And then who is gonna regulate any of it and who is gonna pay for the regulation? It's all about education from when they are young to old on what is best for your body. As Americans we should educate. Leave the controlling to the nazis.

We are 3 amigos in agreement. Poor people would help themselves to put down the cigarettes; beer and coke. If they actually decide to take the stairs or walk to the store, all the better.

This sounds like the makings of a full employment program. Now just unionize these sex inspectors and we should be good. :D

I'll take this as "Let's keep the status quo."

Wait, you can buy coke with food stamps? No wonder so many sign up. I've been missing out.

Some states are trying to limit their choices. I call those states the Nazi Empire. In Cali you can buy a pet dog with your EBT card and call it a steak:(

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS13) – It’s a welfare fraud scheme costing U.S. taxpayers $750 million a year. People are illegally selling their electronic food stamp cards on Craigslist and other social media sites for cash.

CBS13 found two people here in Sacramento, both with the same idea, using Craigslist as free advertising to blatantly and illegally sell their state benefits.

Our hidden cameras were rolling as a woman, who we’ll call Lorie, told our undercover producer about her brilliant idea to game the system for a quick buck.

“Everyone said I was crazy, but I thought they’d say, ‘that’s freaking brilliant, man,’ ” she said.

Another man, who we’ll call Joe, rolled up on a skateboard. He showed us his CalFresh card he illegally put up for sale on Craigslist.

“See, right now it still has $116 on it,” he told our undercover producer.

Rather than use that money for food like he’s supposed to, Joe offered to sell us the card for just $60 cash.

“I just need the money right now,” said Joe. “I moved back in with my mom.”

He promised to give us his pin number so we could use the card to buy groceries in any store that accepts EBT cards.

Joe said stores don’t check for any identification. He freely admits he’s done this before for family and friends. He told us not to worry, because we won’t get caught.

Lorie doesn’t even think what she’s doing is wrong.

“I feel justified in what I’m saying and what I’m doing,” she said.

She would use the cash for a car to get to work.

“I figure it this way, they’re already giving me the money, OK. I’m not making a profit. I’m not burning them. I’m not stealing from them,” Lorie said.

Not by a long shot, says Michael Weston with the California Department of Social Services.

“It’s against the law,” he said.

The CalFresh program is funded by taxpayers and serves more than four million Californians.

The annual cost of food stamp fraud nationwide, is three-quarters of a billion dollars. People attempting to buy or sell food stamps are breaking the law.

“It’s an issue that we’re aware of. It’s an issue we’re serious about and that we’re monitoring,” said Weston.

The department has started using custom software to scour social media daily — Craigslist, Facebook, Twitter — in search of illegal ads like the ones Lorie and Joe put up.

“We need to leverage technology ourselves in order to keep ahead of these people,” said Weston.

Since monitoring began in February 2012, they’ve found 404 so-called trafficking posts across California. Investigators have uncovered 2,600 examples of people abusing their benefits and costing taxpayers over $20 million.

I'm not sure this is really a problem. If a guy would rather have $60 cash vs $116 in food, how am I hurt? What we should do is let them opt for reduced cash payments and save money. As a con this should be right in your wheelhouse. Why assume the government knows best what an individual needs to survive? Maybe he has a big garden but can't make his car payment.

Outside of the debate as to whether we need to worry about fraud, I really posted it to make a different point. Food stamps originally limited the poor to making food purchases. With the switch to plastic (basically a pre-loaded debit card) we have increased the obesity problem with the poor. Because now, unscrupulous retailers and welfare recipients have figured out how to buy ANYTHING with that card.

So as we all sit here talking about healthy food choices, and applauding the schools and all their education programs to teach kids about smart choices - those same kids have a fat screaming mom handing them an EBT card and saying, "Sweetie, go to the store for mommy and buy a DVD of Big Momma's house." When the kid wants some food he can scrape some paint chips off the window and fill his belly.

See, we do need public boarding schools.

The answer to America's problems is always to return to the ways of the 1950s. There was a wonderous place kids played back then- it was called 'outside'.

I will call you "truthmaster". LBJ and his good intentions have lead us to this vvvvvvvvvvvv
