I heard Andrea Mitchell interview Peter Alexander just a few minutes after that exchange and he said his question was what they call in the business, a soft ball. All the president had to do was just offer words of encouragement and show determination and he would have hit it put of the park. It wasn't intended to be what they like to call a "gotcha" question.
