I know, being Hawkeyes shouldn't be the first criteria, but what great and upcoming coach would want to work for Barta? We know those two are winners, and I bet they could recruit. Oliver head, Horner top assistant. While we're at it, let's bring in Kenyon Murray to teach defense.

Sorry. I just talked to Gary Barta, and he said that the basketball program is in good shape; that he's pleased with the stability the program has had the past 9 years; that he couldn't be happier with himself about the Fran hire; and that we should expect more and more of that same until Fran decides to retire.

For some reason I feel this is what he thinks...

Not that Barta would have the guts to fire Fran, but if you want to change coaches, look at Buffalo's coach Nate Oats.

We need a proven winning coach who can coach defense and offense equally and recruit against Big 10 teams.
We don't need a former Iowa player who has little experience coaching and no experience as a head coach. Some of you need to just stop with the nonsense. It makes you appear to be about 14 years old.

Hoiberg would work....but please remember that you are stuck with him for at least 10 years....it's the Iowa way.

Wouldn’t mind seeing TJ Otzelberger from SDSU

Good success in his first few years, and was the recruiting guru for ISU when he was there, so you know he can recruit in a big time conference.

What makes you think Dean wouldn't be interested when the HC position opens at Wisconsin?

And he would actually be active in the transfer market.

Fran isn’t going anywhere, but this would be my choice as well

Here's the thing: you hire people, not resumes, and that's where so many organizations make such huge mistakes. Take MLB, for example. For most of its history, managers were fired by one organization and then hired by another. It was musical chairs. It was almost impossible for new blood to get a shot. But now teams are hiring guys with NO managerial or coaching experience at ANY level. And they're doing at least as well as the experienced retreads, and they're bringing new energy and philosophies to the game.

There aren't many great coaches, but it's not because of lack of experience. It's because most people, including most coaches, lack the combination of qualities that make a good coach. Experience would be at the bottom of that list.

Ralph Miller came to Iowa from Wichita State. Lute Olson came to Iowa from Long Beach State. And Todd Lickliter came to Iowa from Butler with a shiny new trophy that said he was the best basketball coach in America.

You hire people with the right qualities. You don't hire resumes.

I don't think Horner would bring anything for our defense. Gatens was tough as nails and knew how to defend, I'd love to have him back. Oliver might be a better recruiter for obvious reasons, and if he has learned anything from coaching Wisconsin defense that is a big plus.

Fund to think about, but in the end if Fran brings anyone new I'm guessing it will be no one on our radar.
