Senior year John Johnson averaged 28 points and 10 rebounds per game. Had an outstanding NBA career. Needs to be top five.
Let me guess, one of your personal favorites? So, Kevin Gamble doesn't even get a mention in the 'others considered category.'
you are right. Super Sam could take the ball to the basket and had a great vertical but was not an outside threat at all. great great person as well. used to give me a ride home if practices ended together. That is a great starting 5 and 6th man, wow, they could do some damage.
And in today's world Super Sam at 6'3' is not playing the small forward position by a 1 or 2 spot
different time and a different type game. both great athletes and both would have adjusted. actually think Andre would have been even better back then. after dr Tom having Andre play with a cracked wrist his entire first year his three point suffered during his career at Iowa.…no three point shots baxk then. where Ronnies quickness would have been a major asset in todays game Dre’s ability to penetrate and dish would have been huge.Woolridge was not better than Ronnie Lester.
he and freddy brown were as good as any two pair we have ever had.Senior year John Johnson averaged 28 points and 10 rebounds per game. Had an outstanding NBA career. Needs to be top five.
Ronnie could penetrate and dish with the best of them. He could have played in any era of basketball.different time and a different type game. both great athletes and both would have adjusted. actually think Andre would have been even better back then. after dr Tom having Andre play with a cracked wrist his entire first year his three point suffered during his career at Iowa.…no three point shots baxk then. where Ronnies quickness would have been a major asset in todays game Dre’s ability to penetrate and dish would have been huge.
pretty sure that is exactly what I said. didn’t shoot from distance but there was no three then eitherRonnie could penetrate and dish with the best of them. He could have played in any era of basketball.
I'm not shading Woolridge. He was a great player in his own right. I watched both play. I just think Lester was the superior player. You are right, the 3-point line did not exist in Ronnie's era but he could hit from distance.pretty sure that is exactly what I said. didn’t shoot from distance but there was no three then either
And I think with four subs and Nelson they took #1 Ohio St. to the final sec. or into overtime.Hawkins played his freshman year at Iowa, so he could be considered the best to play for Iowa. Never eligible to play for varsity.
Don Nelson should probably be 1 or 2. Freshman not eligible to play his 1st year. Averaged 21 pts, 10 rebounds for his Iowa career. Played in the Big 10 against Jerry Lucas, Havlicek, Walt Bellamy and many other pro players. Played with pretty average players at Iowa, in fact, 4 starters were academically ineligible his senior year. 14 years playing in the NBA, with a lot of success and rings. (6-7)
Not sure anyone could argue that point. Ronnie was the best and showed pure class while he beat you!Ronnie was the best ever at Iowa.
Chris pervall ?spelling. He was electric in Sam Williams era. Ronnie Lester was the best. If Fran ever gets someone like Ronnie, hawks get a natty.Oh yes, they were not on tv much back then but when they were I almost always watched. Listened to many of the games. Of course, Ralph Miller had his coaches show on who-tv which I watched many times so I saw a lot of Super Sam's highlights. He was just a very smooth ball player and loved to drive the baseline as well as other great moves.
He didn't play with pretty average players. He played with damned good players, four of whom didn't meet the academic standards (which were tougher then than today.) The team was ranked 4th nationally when the four starters were ruled in eligible. Despite that, the team finished second in the Big Ten.Hawkins played his freshman year at Iowa, so he could be considered the best to play for Iowa. Never eligible to play for varsity.

Sam might have been the best player to ever play for Miller at Iowa. Sam just didn’t have the support Lester had. Sam was really a fine/ smart player.Chris pervall ?spelling. He was electric in Sam Williams era. Ronnie Lester was the best. If Fran ever gets someone like Ronnie, hawks get a natty.
Sam was an amazing player, but I would never rank him higher than John Johnson or Fred Brown.Sam might have been the best player to ever play for Miller at Iowa. Sam just didn’t have the support Lester had. Sam was really a fine/ smart player.
Oh yes, Chris Pervall a top player who was a bit it the shadows of others but very good. I sure hope Fran can get someone even 3/4s of Lester which is better than he has had.Chris pervall ?spelling. He was electric in Sam Williams era. Ronnie Lester was the best. If Fran ever gets someone like Ronnie, hawks get a natty.
Well, I would….plus I think Sam was probably the most important “get” Ralph got at Iowa… without Sam both JJ and Freddy would have gone somewhere else, I think. Sam wasn’t “Super Sam” without reason.Sam was an amazing player, but I would never rank him higher than John Johnson or Fred Brown.
Ralph and Maury John were both outstanding at spotting and signing Juco talent. Sam, JJ and Freddy were certainly Ralph's three best.Well, I would….plus I think Sam was probably the most important “get” Ralph got at Iowa… without Sam both JJ and Freddy would have gone somewhere else, I think. Actually, no. Just thinking of Iowa players who had strong NBA careers to think about players who also stood out at Iowa. If we're voting up 'favorites' I'd be offering Vince Brookins for the list.Let me guess, one of your personal favorites?
But had he………..He never played a game for the Hawkeyes, lol.

Me too! 👍Actually, no. Just thinking of Iowa players who had strong NBA careers to think about players who also stood out at Iowa. If we're voting up 'favorites' I'd be offering Vince Brookins for the list.
Settles was one of the top 10 players I’ve seen at Iowa, and I’ve watched since Ronnie Lester. The back injury really robbed him, but he had the best freshman year I’ve seen. Would have easily been an all American and had a long pro career. Much better than Kenyon or Brunner.Yes, I meant Kenyon. Probably an oversight by the OP given some of the other names on the list (many of which I absolutely agree with).
As much as I loved watching him play, I would not make a "best of" list and include Greg Brunner and not include Kenyon Murray.
If you wanna slide Jess Settles down and keep Brunner in, fine whatever, but Kenyon deserves to be included as one of the 25 best, or certainly at the very least an HM in Hawkeye basketball history.
Great point about Settles’ back issues derailing him towards the end. I was actually debating between him and Brunner at #18. In the end went with GB due to accomplishing what he did with such a height disadvantage won me over.Settles was one of the top 10 players I’ve seen at Iowa, and I’ve watched since Ronnie Lester. Whoops!FYI, the list he quoted wasn’t the OP list.
Brunner’s work ethic was incredible. There’s room on every team for his type of effort but very few have come close to what he brought to each game.Great point about Settles’ back issues derailing him towards the end. I was actually debating between him and Brunner at #18. In the end went with GB due to accomplishing what he did with such a height disadvantage won me over.
OP a fine list. For consideration, Bruce Sky King and Clay Hargrave forgive the spelling. King was a big scorer and I believe Clay led the BIG in rebounding at like 6’4”.
Reggie Evans perhaps. Did we get players from Bucky O Connors final four teams.
Regardless a fun trip down memory lane.
One could only imagine if he had played. He never played a game for the Hawkeyes, lol.
Kevin Boyle? Seriously?
I don't per se have a better choice for you but I remember Kevin being more of a role player than anything. He also had a younger brother, I believe, who played for Iowa.Iowa's 'John Havlicek' baby.
Seriously though, I could possibly be persuaded to replace him with someone from the 'others to consider' list (or anyone else) if you'd care to make a case?
Off the top of my head I'd probably consider replacing him with someone like Ed Horton or Kevin Kunnert.
Boyle would be one of the top 5 defenders on the list, but that not a requirement at Iowa!!Kevin Boyle? Seriously?
