Let's thank Molinaro!

I'm not sure I understand your intent but I think you mean "congratulate" versus "thank." Should we thank him for winning the trials, but not qualifying the weight? This is the first time the US hasn't qualified all the freestyle weights in...well, forever. Metcalf made his own bed so to speak, but I have little doubt he would've qualified had he won the US trials.

We did not qualify 136.5 about 12 years ago, if I remember correctly. I may be mistaken, but I remember a big article in W.I.N. magazine that was bemoaning the politics and how we should have gotten the weight qualified.

In his heyday, Metcalf would have won the trials after having already qualified the weight. But he is not in his heyday, and your statement has lots of doubt associated with it. I wish Brent well.

Frank acquitted himself well over in Turkey. Went 4-1 against world class guys in his half of the bracket. He may not deserve a congrats under the normal definition of the word, but he certainly should have earned everyone's respect. He did better than 98% of people thought he would since the end of March, including PSU fans.

Was that the year that Zadick got the wildcard? He traveled to the games......and found out right before the tournament started that he was awarded the wildcard?

Didn't Metcalf among others have a chance to qualify the weight prior to the trials and failed?

Metcalf went 0-2 at the trials on his home mat. Any talk about what he could or would have done rings incredibly hollow.

What a weird thread. Did he do better than most of us thought he would? I'am sure of it. He did better than what most expected when he won the trials. Did he battle back for 3rd after essentially being eliminated, yes! (barring a wild card or disqualification) Your thank you, would probably come off as a "fu" anyway. You think Metcalf would want a thank you, if it was him. Plan and simple, Frank fell short of the goal. This thread reminds me of all those people out there that created the participation trophy.

"You get what you earn"

Why would a psu fan make a post saying "Let's Thank Molinaro" on the Iowa wrestling forum?

Look - most of us have respect for Frank and his performance and effort over the last 2 months. He made a great run and shocked a lot of people with how close he came to making the Olympics. I feel bad for him to make it so close and become the U.S. representative but to fall just barely short of qualifying. If he would've qualified, I would have supported him in Rio.

With that said, I have nothing to thank him for. I'm not a Frank Molinaro fan. I don't like watching him wrestle. His style is not good for the sport imo. Can't fault him for wrestling that way, since it allowed him to make it a lot farther than he would have otherwise.

I question the purpose of this thread. Many Hawkeye fans have already acknowledged and praised Frank for winning trials and supported him as he tried to qualify the weight. However, it's not like he's a former hawk or someone who needs a tribute thread on this board and for a psu fan to start it shows questionable intentions.

Frank did better than I thought he would do. He still isn't as good as Metcalf, Pico, Oliver, and is a tossup with Stieber. I can't stand the guy for his on and off the mat antics, but I was hoping he would make the team. Frank is a dbag but he he is our dbag until he gets knocked off next year.

As Frank's Rio dreams fade, all I can remember is his late match a$$ dragging in College & his inability to remember that the ball grab has been removed from International Wrestling.

Sucks for him. He had a great tourny at Trials but fails to qualify.
I'll root for team USA over any other country regardless of school. That being said, if it's a weight we failed to qualify, the fact that it's a psu alum not qualifying it takes a bit of the sting off the burn.

Come on, put yourself in his shoes. He wins a spot on the Olympic team but doesn't get to go to Rio. That's gotta hurt. Have a freakin' heart.

I believe so. It wasn't necessarily a wild card, but one of the Western European countries wrestlers got hurt and his backup got in a car wreck and injured on the way to the airport. So He was able to wrestle in the games since he was there and ready. I believe he was there with Schwab as his workout partner?

It was a digital cartoon parodying his choice to go under Dake that was about a minute long. PSU fans aside it was comedy gold for any other college wrestling fan. I don't doubt the NLWC had something to do with it disappearing from the Internet a couple years ago. I'm sure someone has it on their hard drive; post it, please.

I blame Molinaro's bangs. They were probably in his eyes when he was wrestling Novachkov.

I do feel bad for the kid.

Some of you guys are dicks.

Can't believe I'm responding, but what did you hope to accomplish with your post? Clearly, you understood that more than a few Iowa HR posters wouldn't be rushing out of bed to "thank" Molinaro for giving it the old college try. So, count me among those cynics who think you wanted to invite the very types of responses that you got, all so that you could feign disgust at HR's lack of empathy for Molinaro. FWIW, I'm sorry Molinaro fell short of his dream, but I'm a Metcalf fan and I feel worse for Metcalf. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go to BWI to initiate a thread asking PSU fans to "thank" Ramos for his contributions to the world of wrestling, including but not limited to his pinning of Gulibon and then flexing his biceps.

Thank you, Frank, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to attempt to qualify the weight for the Olympics.

I vote the above sentiment be engraved on a participation trophy and gifted to Frank to cherish and celebrate for all eternity.

Dude, he was wrestling for the United States, not for Penn State. we are all fans of wrestling in general, and if some of you guys hold it against this kid that he went to a different school then so be it. I figure the kid is pretty down right about now and if we can help lift his spirits in any way then we should try. It's called empathy, Bro.

Dude, let it go......

The unfortunate thing is, Frank happened to be on the day of the trials and beat a lot of guys (barely) that are better and more experienced in freestyle than he is. Frank came into the tournament unseeded and eeked his way through a gauntlet of talented American wrestlers. Ironically, he got eliminated from the games by losing to an American who happens to wrestle for Bulgaria. Pretty embarrassing for USA wrestling given that this has never happened before.

Competing thoughts here. I'm not going to stomp on the guy who came up just short of achieving his dream, and he wrestled really well in a tough draw. I may not like Molinaro as a wrestler outside of when he's repping the US, but it has to be incredibly crushing for him.

I also question the motives of a PSU fan coming here to post it, though. And there's nothing to "thank him" for. Maybe a congratulations?

Hey, lets be fair.
this is a Hawk board. Designed expressly for Hawks. On many threads and post, people here have been very supportive of Frank. Why would you think this thread makes sense? No disrespect to you or Frank but that is PSU fans job to appreciate their guys. While this board covers a ton of wrestling topics, it is a hawk board. Not our job to thank team USA or any other team. As a group, we do give that respect and thanks. while I welcome PSU fans who add to the discussions, I am not excited about the ones who come on here instead of their own board expecting us to bow at the happy valley flag. I get there is not as much good info on that board but understand....Hawk board is the core. I am not a Frank fan per se but I am disappointed he did not qualify for the US. I hope he can re group and move forward. Frankly, I am not going to check the board to make sure he is ok. As far as I am concerned, all are welcome to discuss Hawks and the sport but remember...it is supposed to have hawk bias. We are not dicks. Just more interested on our team.

I don't remember the PSU board thanking Metcalf. For the most part, it got pretty brutal about him.

I'm not a PSU fan or an Iowa fan, I'm just a fan of wrestling and you guys have the two best discussion boards. I get that some of you guys don't like Molinaro. To each their own.

If you feel like my comment is directed at you then it probably is.
What were you expecting when you created this thread on an Iowa board? If you felt the need to thank Frank, you could have done so in the FS qualifier thread on this board and probably would have gotten a muted response. In my opinion, it didn't need to have it's own separate thread. It came across as 'in your face', and it was taken that way. If a poster came over to bwi and wanted us to thank Dennis after our guy was "the man" at the weight for years, there'd be some that wouldn't take kindly to being reminded of that. You said nothing wrong, but the timing was ill advised is all I'd say.
