It may have been. I just remember a big stink because we had had a bunch of years in a row with medalists at the Olympics and world championships and we did not have an entry at that weight. Zadick may have actually gotten in. I am going off memory here.
The point is well taken though, It is very rare that we do not qualify a weight in freestyle.
I don't feel bad for him any more than the 3rd string kid in the room working his butt off to make the team. One of the greatest Brands quotes I ever heard was him say "No one feels sorry for you out there. Except maybe your mom"
He should have the least regret of the whole group of 65lbers. He got a couple chances to qualify the weight and see where he stood on the world scene.
Guys like Mecalf, Stieber, Pico, Rutherford, Oliver, Healthy Humpreys ... I am almost certain every one of these guys had a better shot at international success than Frank, but they fell short on a given weekend and will have a lot of what ifs to live with. Feel bad for them if you want to feel bad for someone.
I also think the way they pick the rep is fine. Sure maybe we could cherry pick who goes and get a few more medals here and there. But that is not why most of us ever got into wrestling in the first place. One of the biggest reasons I feel in love with wrestling was because you almost always got to earn your spot without politics.

Not a big fan of Frank and he was the last PSU guy in the Cael era I thought would make the team but he had a great day at trials...everything went his way. Wished he would have made it even if it cost us some crowing by the PSU fans. Hope he can get in through the backdoor...so to speak.
Ok. Did not see that. I was wrong. The treads I did see we're not as kind but touché.
only the ones who didn't read the tea leaves on Lee were surprised there. If it was just Lee, the response might have been different. Teasdale was a complete surprise though, and you know how fans are with negative surprises, especially when it comes in a pair.
It's upsetting that we did not qualify the weight, no matter who was representing us. Frank wrestled his best during the trials and earned the spot. No matter who I think would have been better in that spot, the fact is, it was his spot, he beat the man to earn it. Period. While I don't think we need to be thanking him for anything, it's too bad he did not qualify it.
My personal opinion is that if he wrestled Metcalf 10 times, he might win 2 matches, based on Metcalfs performance against US competition over the last few years. But Frank won when it counted and he deserved the spot. Also, the fact is, Frank was not the only one that failed to qualify the weight, he is simply the most recent to fail in his attempt. Based on all the facts, it seems that the US was not going to medal that weight no matter who might have represented us, that's hard to believe considering the talent we have at that weight, but based on the end result, seems like a logical conclusion. Maybe someone with more international knowledge can shed some light on why we are struggling at this weight right now.

I remember seeing that clip when it came out, several times. As a PSU fan, I felt for Frank's painful loss, but still found the clip pretty funny!

PSU has a great team, they have exciting wrestlers and from my personal observations, running in to a few at Carver and running in to Nico after the Big10's, they are good, high character kids that have earned everything they have gotten. They don't need an opposing team to laud them with praise, as you are requesting, especially on their own home turf. I appreciate and respect their team and think some of their posters over here add good value, but I don't need to cheer them on or thank them for anything, they have their own fans for that. Just like every fan based has hated Iowa since I was a little kid, most fan bases now hate PSU. They have earned that. That hate comes from them having something that other teams want. You obviously understand this yet started this thread anyway, which makes you a tool.

I want to thank Molinaro for doing his part in making sure that PSU hasn't had an Olympian since 2004. Maybe in 2020 Cael will have reinvented International wrestling as well.
If there's a Trump rally in town, I'm sure Neo Hawk will be there, lol
Seriously though, Molinaro was representing all of us and I feel terrible for the kid that he overcomes these impossible odds and then doesn't get the chance to medal. I root against Penn State in every sport but this wasn't a Penn State appreciation thread, just a thread to let the young man know wrestling fans know how hard he worked and that we appreciate his efforts. That's a good point, I'm not familiar with GR wrestling but we should give those guys their due as well.
Actually he isn't wrestling for the USA, he failed to qualify the weight. Therefore any loyalty (the little I had) is over unless he gets a wildcard.

Meh. As Frank's chances of medaling were slim to nil, I don't consider it a big loss to USA wrestling that the weight is not qualified. I never really cared for the guy anyway..... My opinion would probably be different if it was some other PSU guy I appreciated i.e. QW, DT, ER, Retherford.
