Looking like extra year will be granted

They should give every spring athlete another year. If you look at DII DIII and Juco many haven’t even played a game yet.

I doubt many would take advantage of it but it should be offered. Even if without scholarship it’s at least an option for the student.

I would guess 90+% of winter athletes completed their senior season.

Ncaa basketball could have played their tournament in school arenas in late May IMO if the virus cooled off but apparently they decided just to can it.

That's the best way to handle it. Give the winter & spring sport seniors the option to come back. It'll be interesting to see how many would take advantage of that option or going about their lives.

Winter sport athletes should not get another year. Yes, it sucks not playing in a championship tourney but they played basically the whole year up until now.

Exactly. For instance why should isu b-ball seniors be allowed another year. There season was done and over already like the teams from the MVC who were done since last weekend. As bad as I feel for Kriener and Evelyn they shouldn’t get an extra year.

Sounds like Spring Junior College athletes will not have the spring season count against their eligibility unless they play 60% of their scheduled games.

Seriously? And do what, have an A&B team or a JV? What would Fran do with 17 guys on the roster? What would be the fallout with the five freshman. Suppose someone like Perkins doesn't want to redshirt? So he loses an entire year riding the pine, because unfortunately this years seniors mised out on a game or two? This would be a gigantic clusterfXXX, and a terrible idea, and its unwarrented.

There is no ideal situation here. The extra year thing would be optional, not mandatory. Each coach would have to be honest about how much the returning player would play, and come to a decision that way.

It really doesn't matter if incoming freshmen don't want to redshirt. This is an unusual situation. They don't have to redshirt. If they're good enough to play, they'll play.

I understand its optional. Its not like you could make the guy come back. Still don't see anyway you could have a unified functional team with that many players on it, counting the incoming freshman. I also realize that redshirting is ultimately up to the players, as it should be. You have to admit though if Kreiner and BE returned that Fran would play them, and thats going to cut into playing time for guys like Perkins, and Ulis, and hell who knows maybe even the twins. Just don't think it is in teams best interest to screw up an entire season, because of this situation.

Jess Suttles talked about this very subject on Big Ten Network last night. Even mentioned his six years of eligibility due to injury bug.

It's a logistical nightmare. Many sports offer partial scholarships.

It also seems to pit some schools at a totally unfair advantage. Imagine a team like iowa last year who only had one scholarship senior vs a team who had 4 or 5? Even if not all the player's decide to return, senior-laden teams will have a bigger talent pool to pick players from.

Idk. Seems like the best solution would have been to just hold the tournament in May immediately after graduation. Players looking to move on can move on. Players looking to stay and play in the tourney can. I'd like to hear why that wasn't an option.

Selfishly, I want Ryan K to have a final b10 and ncaa tourney- that kid left it all on the court for the Hawks
so have all the hawks that have been waiting for the minutes that he'd be taking.

damned if you damned if you don't unfortunately :(

When you add up DI DII DIII and all the JUCOs I would guess most athletes get nothing in terms of scholarships. A vast majority will not hang around and pay a good chunk of tuition and room and board to play another year.

Ok, maybe it could work for Div III and other non scholly divisions

I would most certainly be up for May Madness!

The arenas will be available for games. The hotels and airlines would like to make up the business.

And the ADs are will be sitting idly soon. Makes some plans for late May.

So Connor probably is done with basketball, but can play another yr of baseball?

Or, can seniors that didn't "grad transfer" now transfer for baseball and/or other spring sports?

Inquiring minds are hyper speculating all the dynamics.

Connor just completed his sophomore season. So I don't understand your question.

I think one group of beneficiaries that we haven't considered is coaches who are "on the hot seat". A guy like Richard Pitino, for example, now has very little chance of getting canned. I think most every school will just stand pat. A number of coaches may have gotten an extra year to prove themselves.

It certainly sucks that Kreiner, Evelyn, and Till don't get an opportunity to play in the tournament this year. But.... be careful what you ask for. If you look at what Iowa loses (2 key bench players and a walk-on who was leaving anyway), it's much less impacting that many other conference teams.

This. Compared to some other teams, Iowa would not benefit from this.
