Luka Garza Final Game Highlights 37pts 17RB

Nice hands, long arms, and moves well for a big guy. Shot looks good and he is relentless on the boards, although he was at least 4 or 5" taller than any opponent. Playing "above the rim" is overrated. It looks good on highlights, but it seldom wins games.

Yeah.....that's hard to teach. That's work ethic and character. Those are traits that will take natural talent a long long way.

I get the feeling that this guy is a serious worker and a quick learner. Glad to have him.

Dude looks tenacious!! Doesn't want to give up on a shot or a board.

Needs to put on some muscle to play against B10 competition, but certainly has a good looking upside.
He's not skinny but has some weight that needs put into muscle which is easier than a skinny big trying to put on weight. But I've liked his videos since we started recruiting him 2-2 half years ago. Not the fastest player, but that was when he was heavier, think he's faster now. Going to have to be with frans system.

Woodbury with a jump shot.
Not quite. Garza was 7 for 7 from the line, and Woody was a 45% free throw shooter in high school. It took Woody until his junior year to really start to improve from the line. Kid has a solid looking stroke. Really excited to have Garza join our young bigs next year. Looks like a young Kevin Mchale.

Luka Garza had a huge game on Wednesday, finishing with a triple double of 34 points, 17 rebounds, and 11 blocked shots in Maret's 80-63 win over Thurgood Marshall. On Friday, Garza had 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots in Maret's 46-45 win over St. John's. Finally, in Sunday's championship game, Garza had 37 points and 17 boards, but saw Maret lose to Gonzaga 77-66. Garza finishes the season averaging 24.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game for Maret (26-5).

I think Garza is going to be very good. Maret is 650, K- 12 (elementary (K-8) and high school on same campus). Their elementary school counts in their enrollment. Garza's video was just highlight clips of the game. Maybe if we could see the whole game we would have a better perspective of the caliber of competition.

You're right, I missed that. However, Gonzaga is nearly 1000 in the HS, and is a boys only school, so all 1000 are male.

Actually Woodbury was a 70% free throw shooter as a sophomore and his junior year was a down year.

The consistent theme I notice with this board is posters overhype incoming center recruits only to treat them like red-headed step children when they graduate.

We saw this happened with Woodbury and before that Jared Reiner. Suddenly Garza is a significantly more multi-dimensional highly-skilled recruit than Woodbury, who had offers from even better schools than Garza.

Yeah...Woody wasn't a guy with great post footwork or post moves, but he could run the court. And he was a major major factor on the defensive side with calling out switches and pointing out where the play was moving. Probably not in the top-5-all-time Hawks at center, but a very capable and valuable player. Worked his ass off, too.

Jeess, never said Woody wasn't a hard worker or valuable player. I said Garza appears to have more offensive game now then Woody did. Watch the tape. I know its a highlight, but he did a half dozen things that Woody couldn't do as a senior. Sorry if I messed up Woody's progression on free throw improvement, but you kind of made my point as well. And yes in high school he was a sub .500 free throw shooter.
Loved Woody's effort, his work on defensive, and passing, and his leadership, but that doesn't mean we can't be excited about the new kids as well.

I was replying to the other poster who pointed out how much hype some of these kids get, and then how badly they're demeaned when they don't meet the hype.

Then explain what else separates the two? Eyepokes?
Garza actually has a decent second jump, which Woody never had. They have about the same footwork moving laterally. Garza has a better offensive skill set at this point in time. Garza has longer arms. That's for sure. I'd bet they are 4 or 5 inches longer than Woody's. Woody had some T-Rex going on for a 7' kid.

That's horrible....

But I'm no better...I wanted to adopt this Doxbull doggie and rename him T-Rex....
Or at least teach him a "T-Rex Trick" to stand up on his back legs and beg for treats...

Yes, I'm sure we offered based on high school and not a great summer AAU season

Somewhat, yes. We offered before the summer AAU season really kicked in almost 2 years ago. Luka had 2 offers. He ended up with like 30 offers... There were most likely a few games played that were non-high school. But the AAU competition, where Luka blew up & the offers came in, was almost a year after we offered.

Fran just knows how to evaluate talent. He has offered several earlier than any
P5 school, only to have that player blow up much later in recruiting after the AAU circuit makes it obvious to everyone. KF is good at that, eyeing talent before everyone else. So much so that he can't say a word or everyone knows... Bball is a little different. The good players eventually get noticed. You got to make that offer right away and hit them hard. Then ride the wave and hope you can hang on!

Very try, Ulis the other big example.

Woody did what he could do, but Garza far more skilled. He will contribute immediately.
