Kinda got sucked into reading about/watching Hawkeye teams in the 80s. Men's basketball with Tom Davis coaching George Raveling recruits, football going to a few Rose Bowls, Vivian Stringer winning big 10 championships, wrestling.
10 NCAA basketball appearances in 11 years. Four sweet sixteens. Easily could have been 4-5 more sweet sixteen spots.Kinda got sucked into reading about/watching Hawkeye teams in the 80s. I was on top of the world. A Final Four in 1980, the number 1 rated football team in 1985, and the most colorful football coach in America. I grew up in Iowa City in the eighties and because of Iowa's success, I'm borderline obsessed with Iowa BB and FB even though I haven't lived in Iowa for 20 years. The eighties were magical as a Hawkeye fan.Kinda got sucked into reading about/watching Hawkeye teams in the 80s. Hawkeye baseball games were also a blast in the 80's. On a sunny spring day you could go to the ballpark, no charge, and bring your own cooler of beer. Things would get rowdy, and head coach Duane Banks loved it.
It was fun. This could just be "older guy" bias, but IC in general was more fun in the 80's.Kinda got sucked into reading about/watching Hawkeye teams in the 80s. My biggest regret is that I spent to much time in the stands and not in the library. That said, they were heady times indeed, particularly wrestling. It was an awesome time to be on campus (82-86). My biggest regret is that I spent too much time in the library and not enough in the stands.

Was just a golden era of college campus life as well. Could come and go from the stands, kegs in the dorms, etc... Sure the music was cheesy but it was also a blast.
Best part was no phones, truly felt like you were in your own world and didn’t have to worry about mistakes getting plastered over Twitter/Facebook. Once you were out for the night never knew where it would lead you.
Yup. Ah, glory. The idea that someone would try to punish you for your "mistakes" later was completely foreign. People who did that shit back then were called narcs and once identified they were ostracized--no one invited those pricks to parties and if you saw one of them there everyone would bail or, occasionally, there would be a glorious ass-beating.
It's horrific that the no-fun douchebags took over this country. Evangelical Christians were like Jehovah freaks back then. Not only did you not associate with those freaks, but you'd be considered a pariah if you were a God nut back then. I don't know what the **** happened, but somehow half the country thought that the Christian nuts were the heroes in Footloose.
