Mansell

Our wr’s suck still. Did any group of wr’s in the country have just 22 catches in 13 games besides ours last year ?( talking the smith boys). Let’s give cooper and others a chance

They were the 3rd and 4th receivers last year. Don’t forget the almost 80 catches between the other 2 receivers.

I expect we'll see some up and down play from the passing game very similar to last year. This may be the Hallmark of years with Stanley as the starter. One of the things that makes Stanley good as a starter Beyond just completing passes is his overall demeanor and command. Mansell May be more of a Drew Tate type of quarterback with less of the emotional antics. I'm not sure the staff would be willing to take the risk but it's possible that Mansell so would bring about a better overall offencive performance.

He did look crisp and decisive. He was also playing fresh against a defense that was completely gassed and beaten.

Serviceable is the key. I think he could be serviceable. He looked very comfortable running the offense on kids day too.

What is known: Mansel would give Iowa's offense 400 or more rushing yards and 14/15 more rushing 1st downs per season than Stanley. What is unknown: passing accuracy, decision making, leadership skills. Mansell would add a new dimension to Iowa's offense (still hoping that Nate will show a willingness to scramble-run) but uncertain if he would he be a consistent passer. He does appear to have a confident attitude and that's half the battle.

Mansell looked confident and threw the ball with accuracy and zip. The kid clearly seems to have potential. He's a different style of QB than Stanley because of his mobility. Gotta like what little we've seen.

Agree, he did look good, other than the INT which really wasn't an INT. Would have liked to see what was going on downfield.

Great to see Peyton Mansell get some reps in the game. It is important to get the first game under your belt and build from there. You never know when a backup is needed at any position. Helmet pops off, wind gets knocked out of someone etc...Glad he did good. Have been rooting for him since he commited.

What's the saying, "The most popular player on the team is the backup"

I was hoping we would see the backup, I know he didn't get an opportunity to do a ton, and with the limited plays we did see I was more than happy. Seems to be mobile and some decent zip. I think the next 3yrs of QB play will be at the very least better than average if all goes well.

HawkFan hit it on the head. Last thing we need to be thinking about is backup QB when Iowa’s best offering is alive and well.

I’m not sure I follow. What should “we” as fans focus on to prepare ourselves for Iowa State? Scheme, conditioning, two deeps, ketchup, mustard.... let us know so we, as fans, are not looking past ISU.

I don’t think I read one post above that suggested KF is playing the wrong qb or even one taking anything away from Stanley. It’s basically a thread about a young qb playing a few snaps. That’s it. I personally was pleased with what I saw in the #2 qb, but that doesn’t mean a whole hell of a lot at this point.

There is no QB race. Stanley is clearly the #1 and will remain as such as long as he is here. PM looked very good when he was in there but there is no question who QB 1 is.

It was good simply from the standpoint of seeing the backup get some snaps.
On the plus side, he's significantly more mobile than Nate. Personally just my preference in that I like a QB in the college game that is always a threat to make a play with his legs as much as his arm.
He won't see the field unless the game is decided or Nate is hurt. He did show enough to give some confidence that the season wouldn't necessarily be lost if Nate was unavailable.

It seemed like all summer people were ready to crown Petras as #2. Can we all agree Mansell is the clear #2 now?

Who is saying that the wrong QB is playing? Everyone is basically saying it was great to see the backup get in the game.

.

This isn't directed at you Hawkfun5220, you're not the one who coined the phrase. But it's one of those cliches which has been inflated past its meaning.

"The most popular player on the team is the backup QB", is only true....when the starter is playing poorly. (which makes sense as QB is the most visible position). Backup QBs are largely anonymous on teams with a start QB playing well. But they love to trot this saying out.

I said in my post that I didn’t see anyone saying the wrong qb is playing. So the answer to your question is no one.

The guy I responded to said that “we” are focusing too much attention on the back up qb. I’d just like to know what “we” should be focusing on to prepare for ISU.

Do you know?

here were Payton's numbers from his SR season playing in Texas's largest class
completion rate 70.1%
2526 passing yards
33 passing TD's
165 carries for 1134 yards
15 rushing TD's
total offense
3660 yards
48 TD's
ESPN rated him the 17th best QB and the #1 QB in Texas. his HS team is a run 1st team. his 2 longest 2 TD runs were 85 yards as a SR and 83 yards as a JR respectively. one more note according to evaluators he can make all the throws, short or deep. that should answer some questions. playing the largest Class in Texas means he played against the best level talent in the state.

That all begs the question, how did he end up at a school known for conservative offense with a qb that stays in the pocket?

GD recruited him that's why and GD recruited Stanley. also not all Iowa QB's stay in the pocket
JR had 218 rushing yards on 67 carries in his 1st year starting with Wiesman the leading ball carrier with 227 carries and 975 rushing yard in 2013. then in 2014 had 67 carries for 176 yards with walk on FB Wiesman leading the team with 213 carries and 812 yards.
CJ had 237 rushing in his 1st year starting in 2015 but in 2016 he had -13 yards on 83 carries.

this is why I never understood why people were upset with Davis, people expected Texas type stats with Iowa level recruits at the skill positions.

getting Payton was a good pickup just like getting Stanley was a good get. this give a solid 1-2 option at QB. Stanley is a solid Pocket QB while Payton a pass 1st and run 2nd QB.
