GD recruited him that's why and GD recruited Stanley. also not all Iowa QB's stay in the pocket
JR had 218 rushing yards on 67 carries in his 1st year starting with Wiesman the leading ball carrier with 227 carries and 975 rushing yard in 2013. then in 2014 had 67 carries for 176 yards with walk on FB Wiesman leading the team with 213 carries and 812 yards.
CJ had 237 rushing in his 1st year starting in 2015 but in 2016 he had -13 yards on 83 carries.

this is why I never understood why people were upset with Davis, people expected Texas type stats with Iowa level recruits at the skill positions.

getting Payton was a good pickup just like getting Stanley was a good get. this give a solid 1-2 option at QB. Stanley is a solid Pocket QB while Payton a pass 1st and run 2nd QB.

I wish we could get the back up QB in for a full series every game. That would help us build a championship level team.
