Margaret McCaffery on "T’d Up with Connor & Patrick." Talks about Jack, Social Media Criticism of her Sons & More

This coming from a guy that spends every waking moment on a forum chat. Oh you funny guy....now go back to petting your cat's.
Great use of the quote function, doofus. You must not be a cat owner if you think they want anything to do with humans.

Now take a seat or lie down, whichever is most comfortable, and we can talk about your obsession with the McCaffery family.

if you missed this in Feb 2022, you might want to watch now.

helps explain why Jack is not interested in Iowa

Watch here:

Kind of ironic that she says people who are critical are stupid. I haven't been critical of Fran playing his sons and I like Connor, but fans do have the right to question and be critical. So for her to call them stupid and to expect everyone to treat her kids like they're perfect, well that's stupid. I get it she's frustrated with some of it, I would be too, but they should know the environment. They're certainly getting paid well enough and they can leave at any time. If it's that hostile of an environment, I encourage them to move on, don't go on the Internet and complain.

I can only imagine the stuff that has been tweeted at CMac, PMac and JMac. I think she is calling these people & the nasty things they have said in their tweets stupid, because they are and it is. Being objective and critical is one thing; what the McCafferys have probably seen, however, has been both nasty and out of bounds.

I wish all players would turn social media off during the season. Connor & PMac were constantly attacked by people hiding behind handles and you know a lot of them were not Iowa fans (more of "the stupid" that I think Margaret is talking about).

Fran absolutely hates Twitter but has stated previously that Jack tells him all the time what is being said on Twitter.

And I agree with you; at over $3M a year, I would be more than happy to put up with the outside noise.

All I can say is that they're not alone. In fact there are people taking more abuse and not making the money they do. If they don't like all the garbage they too should stay away from it. That's like someone preaching on campus and expecting to not get people talking back. She just needs to be careful because to me, she came off as implying that if you disagree with her, then you're stupid. They control a lot of this. Personally for me, if my son was having anxiety issues, the last thing I would want him doing is putting himself out there on the Internet for others to be critical. It just doesn't seem smart to me.

I agree that a person struggling with anxiety shouldn't be on Twitter

Heres an idea, dont use social media.
I love it that people think twitter is a real place. It's the troll capital of the world. This forum has plenty of trolling as well. I can't imagine being a public figure like the McCaffrey's and allowing anonymous people on the internet dictate your feelings. To give people that you've never met a voice to your emotions is an insane idea to me. Occasionally on here I fall into that trap but then I tell myself, why am I getting upset about an anonymous poster on the internet? It's irrational behavior to give people you've never met access to your emotions. What it shows me though is just how big of egos these people have.

If you support the team, buy season tickets, go to games, watch on TV, etc. of course you can be critical. If you are making millions off fans and a university you of course can be criticized. If you are getting NIL money and a full ride same thing. If you are mixing it up on Twitter with fans even more. You make decisions and live with them, like we all do.

If you don’t want any of that go work in a cube for 50k a year.

What's even more ironic and stupid is her behavior at her son's baseball games in HS.

Margaret has no self-control...it's why she's been kicked out of multiple venues over the years. And the people that sit near her at men's games won't be sad when that day ends.

She’s worse than Fran?

Is the Td' Up podcast still running, or was it going just during the season?
Payton is replacing Connor and they’re rebranding it as “Two P’s in a Pod”. Not sure when their first one will be.

Fran’s idea 💡 per Patrick and Payton. True story per their last podcast with Connor that was about 3 weeks ago.

Do you think Hayden, Kirk, Dr. Tom, Gable, Vivian, Bluder, Brands, etc. got frustrated with portions of the fan base from time to time? Absolutely they did. But they and their families kept it to themselves. Hayden (and to a lesser extent Kirk) would clap back at the media sometimes, but almost never at the fans.

Iowa is a fish bowl. You 100% know that coming into the job. Alford relished the attention until it turned, and then he and Tonya got super defensive. If their son had been older at the time and playing at Iowa, it would have been worse for sure. I feel like Fran and his family have tried to have it both ways for many years.

One it’s common knowledge and been discussed here multiple times fran was livid when dolph gave tix he got from the U close to his family and ended up going to Dolphs friends who were Wisconsin fans and comments they made during the game pissed off margaret. Then the Dailey incident which had happened within last 2 months and fresh in Fran’s mind. Which we’ve seen like with the Woodbury eye poking Fran is loyal to a fault and will back his guys till the end and let it be known which is not a bad thing. But even dakich said after criticizing him he and Fran who’ve been friends had a conversation to clear the air after what he said and are fine now.

Lastly the email sent to leerfield that’s been posted here. One random complaint day or 2 after the game. huge over reaction by Iowa by one measly email and if he wanted to Fran could’ve softened the blow but like with cj transferring unlike nunge he remained silent which spoke volumes. On top of it all so many examples shown where people of late have used the same phrase. Only the ultra sensitive made it to be racial.
Fran being "friends" with Dakich reveals a serious f-ing character flaw.

As I recall, Fran and Family received a lot of good will and support during Patrick's cancer struggles.

Did they talk about that in their podcast?
Very solid point, Darren.
I get that it has to be frustrating to hear some of the garbage sent their way, but I'm guessing the kindness, generosity, and support sent their way during both of Patrick's heath issues far outpaced the garbage.
I'm sure they did appreciate it at the time, but maybe keep a measured approach in your reactions now. I do not claim to know anything personal about Margaret, but the more I hear, the less appealing she sounds. I understand the "mama bear" mentality, so some slack is certainly cut, but....

So, do you still "find it highly unlikely"?

Not anymore unfortunately. My biggest concern is that perhaps Margaret has breathed life into this idea due to her own perceptions and bias over the treatment her sons and spouse have experienced over the years from some fans. If she’s exerting too much influence on his ultimate decision then quite frankly she’s not being a very good parent at all either.

It’s Jack’s life and his decision, she should merely support him through the process but I don’t think she can be objective enough to actually do that.

I worked the Iowa basketball camp for four years, and was always impressed with Patrick and Jack. Both very good kids, even at a young age. Connor was brash and somewhat of a punk, but give him credit for being a tough player and great student. Overall, the McCaffrey's raised three very solid boys.

I say all that just to emphasize how shocked I am that it turned out that way w a mother like Margaret. She's truly an awful, awful person... and a horrible representative for the state of Iowa.

Honestly, if Marge is so miserable here...why do they stay?

I think she had been around small Catholic schools like Notre Dame and Siena, and the giant Big 10 school thing here is not the same.
$hit loads of money.

She's fvcking clueless. You can't compare sienna fan base to a power 5 school.

Try playing your sons over more talented players at places like OSU, MSU or Indiana and see how that goes.

Reality is they would have never been given even close to this amount of leway at most other power 5 schools.

Interesting take by Marg on loyalty in the current era.
Clearly singling out Miller Kopp transferring from NW to league rival IU.
I am wondering if Fran feels the same about CJ?
Clearly Fran values loyalty to his players and from his players.
I love coaches who preach loyalty then leave a school mid contract when a better offer comes along

I'll say this. I was at MSG this year for the Iowa/Duke game and I will just say that the McCaffery family couldn't have been better representatives of the state as well as the University. This was both my experience as well as the crowd I was with not associated with Iowa. My sister also works in college athletics and has worked with the family both at Washington and Wisconsin and had great experiences as well.

Point taken. We all have different experiences/perspectives. All I know is, in 2015 I saw MargeMac go batshit crazy on a minimum wage Carver usher. Never seen anything like it. Hope to never see it again. A decent, rational adult would never EVER behave in that manner. It was enough to turn me against the Mccaffery's. Permanently.

Yeah I understand. I have nothing against her. I don't know her. I am just reacting to the fact that she seems very unhappy here. I don't get any of the trashing kids on social media thing. Hard to believe adults do that. Not just to her sons either. I would say most families of D-1 athletes experience it to some degree. The downside of the fame and interest in it. I'm not a fan of social media. I have been on this forum a long time and generally people don't trash the players here. I thought the treatment of Spencer was horrible and embarrassing for me as an alum. My only criticism of Fran is his coaching and lack of emphasis on defense. There are a lot of years here now. The data does not lie. His kids are both decent players and give good effort. I think Connor could become a better coach than Fran perhaps.

Interesting she was kicked out wow had no idea i know she was vocal but kicked out?

Lots of good stuff.

Watch here:

Wow, so this vocal minority of negative fans leads them to smite all of Hawkeye Nation as ignorant and don't understand how the game of basketball works. No one is allowed to be critical of the coache's sons. They're above the criticism. Whatever.

I hope Jack does go elsewhere, if for no other reason to prove to Margaret that the Hawkeye fanbase isn't the only one with social media morons.
