Margaret McCaffery on "T’d Up with Connor & Patrick." Talks about Jack, Social Media Criticism of her Sons & More

MargeMac at 47:20 mark: "You just have to try to believe there's more good in people, and there's more humane people out there."

... says the woman who viciously berated a minimum wage Carver usher within earshot of thousands of fans. And then swaggered back to her seat like she was Marie Antoinette.

Worth mentioning a second time, bc it was the most reprehensible act I've ever witnessed.

It's not just ushers. Go to a West High game and watch how she treats high school referees.

Wow, so this vocal minority of negative fans leads them to smite all of Hawkeye Nation as ignorant and don't understand how the game of basketball works. No one is allowed to be critical of the coache's sons. They're above the criticism. Whatever.

I hope Jack does go elsewhere, if for no other reason to prove to Margaret that the Hawkeye fanbase isn't the only one with social media morons.
Not to mention social media has become a totally different animal in the 13 years they've been at Iowa than it was before they got to IC. It seems the McCafferys want all the benefits of being a power 5 basketball family but don't want to have to deal with the less appealing stuff the is just a fact of life for people in their positions. It's fine if they want to stay but they need to STFU about the fans if they do.

It all happened quick. A young Jack and Patrick tried to walk behind the basket area as the game was going. The usher dude didn't let them through, and they both motioned for Large Marge to come down and speak for them.

The horrific woman went nuclear on the poor guy. It's not like he knew these two young adolescents were McCaffrey kids. Just doing his damn job. Only a pure psychopath would behave the way she did that day.

I've said it 3-4 times already, and I'll say it again... I was 32 at the time, and it was hands down the most appalling ****ing thing I'd ever witnessed.

No, they actually don't need to STFU at all,.. asshole fans can pound sand.

Yeah, plenty have pounded sand already and I'm guessing more will if they keep talking shit about the fans. The same fans who haven't seen a sweet 16 in the 13 years of the McCaffery era yet ranked 24th in the nation in attendance at 12,371 per game. They are very lucky to get the support they do get considering how they shit the bed at the NCAA tourney every year. Brilliant take

I played for my dad at the D3 level, and it was an absolute ****ing disaster. Solid role player, but might as well have been a total bum in everyone's eyes. Now multiply that by 50 when it's the B10 and you got two sons in the damn rotation.

WTF did the McCaffrey's expect?? Patrick has had some nice moments, nothing more. Other than nifty post entries to Garza, Connor was a complete bust for five straight years... Although I absolutely loved him this past season (not hard when you're 25 playing against 18 year olds).

Again, what did these people expect??... really been turned off lately by public comments made by the fam.

A couple of nifty entry passes to Luka? Connor led the nation in assist to turnover last year without Keegan and Luka. Connor was third in the nation in 2022 without Luka. It appears he did a little more than have a few nifty passes to Garza. But then again, it’s not hard when you’re 25 even though he’s not even 25 yet. 🙄. I’m sure you did all this and more in DIII with daddy.

“WTF did the McCaffrey’s expect??” Well for starters, it’s McCaffery. It’s only been 13 years with two players wearing that name on the back of their jersey. But if you listened to the podcast (I’m betting most in this thread didn’t) they expect Iowa fans to stop shitting on Iowa players (and the McCaffery boys) on social media. That message was obviously clear from the podcast.

Lmao 24-25, WTF is the difference? Clearly, the point was that he was at a considerable age advantage. Literally a man against boys. Which is why he had a very nice senior season (which I acknowledged, Big Guy). Good for him.

Also good for him w the assist/TO ratio. Nice little accomplishment, but it's not a metric that's all that important. He didn't live up to expectations, and until senior year he wasn't a starting caliber player at this level. If you think otherwise, then there's not much else I can say.

P.S. gotta say, pretty weird you defend the McCaffrey boys from bad fans... but then in the same message turn around and call me a "daddy's boy." Pretty hypocritical Big Guy.

I don't wish my D3 experiences on anyone. It was traumatic, even life changing. Which is why I always sympathized w Patrick, and never criticized Connor... but that whole family has invited tons of criticism w their ongoing public comments about the Iowa fanbase. As well as Margaret McCaffrey's horrific public behavior.

You don’t even know the coach’s name, or the players who you sympathized with and never criticized (but have consistently done oddly enough) and the wife of the coach who you despise, yet can’t shut up about.

Weird thread indeed.

And that is a silly expectation.

There is no major program where thats a reality.

The bigger the program the more fans, the more fans the more idiots, and idiots are going to be vocal, thats just how it works everywhere.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Unless they played at a major prep program, nearly every D3 player was a high school star (something you almost certainly never achieved).

Further, the primary thing separating high major players from lower level players is pure size (i.e. genetic lottery). Which was one reason I always respected JBo. Dude had a D3 body but still kicked ass in the B10.

You're really coming across as a gigantic dbag on this thread.

I didn’t say it wasn’t an unrealistic expectation. DeanO appeared to be confused on what Mrs McCaffery expected. I thought her message was rather clear from the video.

I’ll edit to say: As you can see in this thread and on this board, there are certain “Hawk fans” who take every opportunity to bash the players and the program (not talking about DeanO either). I’m sure it gets old and has to be very hard not to respond to some of it.

How am I get "destroyed"? Lmao. You haven't made a salient point yet.

Did you "destroy" me when you pointed out I missed on Connor's age by one damn year? No. My implication was clear, and instead of addressing it you quibbled over his age like a ****ing autist.

Did you "destroy" me by pointing out you didn't specifially use the term "daddy's boy"? Again, no. Your implication was clear by saying "playing for daddy." Again, you quibbled over bullshit semantics like Raymond Babbitt. You're a joke.

What’s funny and hypocritical at the same time is that you can’t even take some anonymous person pointing out your mistakes on a message board without getting defensive and making things up that weren’t said. Virtually the same thing you’re upset with the McCaffery’s over. Irony at its best.

Also, when you quote someone, it’s proper to quote what they actually said. Not what they implied.

24-25 isn't a relevant "mistake." The point being made was that Connor had a significant age advantage this past season. Which likely explains why he finally made a breakthrough. He had a helluva season and put on a show in that home OSU game. I enjoyed watching his toughness and IQ all year. But that doesn't erase the fact he was a bust his first five years. Nor the fact he was playing against children.

You disagree with what I'm saying? Fine. Have at it. But you elected to quibble over his age like you're ****in Rain Man. That's not an argument, Smart Guy.

That’s weird. Before you said “Other than nifty post entries to Garza, Connor was a complete bust for five straight years.” Now you’re saying that he had a breakthrough because he was significantly older and playing against “children”. Yes, I remember all of those children out there in D1 basketball. Lord, you’re not good at this. This is you getting destroyed.

I dunno, he averaged 6.5/4.1/3,7 in year 6 while playing mediocre to shit defense and getting well above 30 mine a game in conference play. Nevermind the constant whining to the refs and occasional flipping shit to opposing team.

Not sure how much of a "breakout" it was when he was 2.5/2.5/1.9 in a much more appropriate 17 mpg. There were fans who were critical but also plenty who defended him vehemently and still do

The assist/turnover ratio gets brought up ad nauseum and he was a great passer, especially inbounds, but its easy to not turn it over when you put no pressure on the D whatsoever. I don't know many who didn't think they didn't deserve a role but their prominent roles and playing above much better players in the Murray's is what pissed most off IMO. That was absolutely ridiculous

Oh no we're def in agreement man. You might not have seen my earlier posts, but I was pretty harsh on Connor. I only mentioned his "breakthrough" in Year 6 to show I'm not biased when arguing w a Connor apologist.

I did like him that last year. But he was a total BOMB his first 5 years... You did a better job of showing that than I could have done.

Totally agree w you on the constant bitching to the refs too. I hadn't thought of that aspect. I hardly think Fran would've let that slide if it were any other player.

I'm sick and tired of this whole damn family and can't wait for the mediocre McCaffrey era to end. Can't come soon enough.

You were being very kind. Connor was surrounded by some of the best Hawkeyes ever and his era will be remembered as a big disappointment. Fran starting and playing him while injured and near worthless down the stretch in 21 was unforgivable really but keep crying Marge

What else gets brought up by Iowa fans is the consistent whining to refs. Yet somehow Connor won the B1G Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. Is that given to the biggest whiner every year?

The kids are solid players, but they have incredibly thin skin it seems. Always want to spout on tweeter and then are miffed along with mom when the internet trolls say stuff. Need to just stay off it which is easy to say and hard to do.

The most notable part of this is how can you recruit others when it seems like your own family is saying it’s not a good place for one of your own kids to go? I know it would be a unique situation but if I’m another recruit I’d stay the hell away from a place like that.

He was selected for that by his dad...and he was just Iowa's representative for that award...every school has someone that is awarded that for basketball and the school selects who that person is. In 2020 it was Connor for Iowa. In 2022 it was Patrick for Iowa.

Horrible optics, and a major blindspot by Fran. Similar to when I coached the Iowa camp like 6-7 years ago. Fran asked for a volunteer to go through the drills in front of the entire camp. Would've been the chance of a lifetime for every kid there. He ****ing picked Patrick.

Yet another personally witnessed event that has really turned me off this dude.

You couldn’t be more incorrect like when you said that Peter Jok got a second OWI in Iowa City a few years after graduating and nobody noticed. Nobody noticed, because it never happened. You lied.

Iowa gets one male and one female representative from each sport. The B1G then selects one male and one female from each school out of every sport. The B1G selected Connor, not Fran. Then two years later the B1G selected Patrick. Keep spreading those lies. I’m sure some on here believe you.

Not saying you are wrong, or right, but the link you posted doesn't support your arguement. It clearly states the institution is involved , which could be Fran, or not.
Again, just pointing out your link doesn't support your arguement. It is very unclear about parts of the process.
