*****Mark Gronowski COMMITS to IOWA*****

I think Kirk now understands that he operates better in a CEO role with respect to the offense. He hired Lester to do a job. I think he lets him do it.
I don't think he can resist the temptation to stick his filthy fingers into it. Kinda like how the sound of a table saw cutting boards is just too cool to resist sticking your finger into it.

Will we see more than 5 passes travel further than 15 yards next year ?

I’ll wait and see with my own eyes next year. Kirk has really destroyed the offense and we lose our only home run threat

We need OL and hope that somehow the Kirk playbook (run out the clock with 30 mins to play..) is abandoned

Agreed

none of his skill sets mean shit if we can’t utilize them. I don’t expect Iowa to ever throw 40 times a game but our route tree has to go beyond 10 yards.

no, it took Wetjen nearly an entire season to figure out how to get on the field. Lester said it himself, the kid doesn’t know how to run a route. A decoy doesn’t work if it has no idea how to occasionally not be a decoy.
My bad, I stand corrected. Had no idea Lester said that, seems like an odd statement to make though.🤔

Lester also said Brown was not running routes correctly

Why doesn't our WR coach get that figured out and fixed?
Brown was not even showing up to practice. He needed to go.

I don’t know if Budmayr is a good WR coach or not, but I do know our WR production (as meager as it was) increased under his watch. If that is how we measure his success, then we are heading in the right direction.

There has no evidence to suggest otherwise, and plenty to suggest you’re correct.

Literally everyone involved with the program has claimed it’s Lester pulling the strings on that side of the ball.

It’s very hard to convince people they are wrong, once they have made up their mind.

wow i think the 5th string qb now is likely better than the previous 3-4 iowa season starters
Assuming Gronowski is QB1 (safe assumption), we are in a position* to have three backups who have started a game at the P4 level.

When was the last time that happened??

*Assuming nobody transfers out, which is probably a decent possibility following spring practice

I think it has something to do with what they've been conditioned to believe. In the 7 years before Lester arrived, Kirk/Brian ran every aspect of the offense. There was little daylight between them, and it wouldn't surprise that every hire was Kirk's decision and his decision alone.

So here we are today, and while Lester appears to have the reins of the offense well in hand regarding player personnel decisions and scheme, people will still point to Budmayr and Barnett as evidence that Kirk still has his fingers in it. IMO, this is more of a legacy of prior decisions rather than evidence of him taking an active role. While Lester likely has little or no input on those members of the staff, should Kirk decide a change is in order (highly unlikely), or they leave of their own accord, I think Lester would be at least an equal partner in deciding on replacements.

His comments about the NCAA doing nothing about the reporting of tampering says it all. Iowa is right to focus on the guys they got, develop them and keep them happy, and fill in gaps where needed. So far, it seems to have worked. The guys leaving Iowa are not guys that were vying for a lot of playing time, by and large.

No one wants to pay for what we’ve seen over the last 5-8 years

Even with some offensive stars under Stanley, we were so inconsistent it was maddening. Beat down OSU, gain 66 yards against WI the next week

Then Brian takes over as QB coach and offense goes off the rails.

I think people will donate or join if they see real legit changes going forward.

Unfortunately we don’t have the West division to fall back on. 8-10 wins usually enough to get into conference championship

Now it’s 4th place

Bold - I do not get that comment at all and why it would be so difficult. Understand maybe reading D wrong, but not running routes which should be defined in playbook.
The first thing one needs to understand is Lester made an accurate comment.

There are huge differences in route running ability that result in differences of tens of millions of dollars in the pros.

First, one has to have the physical abilities to run good routes. You have to be able to changes speeds and direction, have flexibility in the hips, etc. That's why straight line runners, like Wetjen, aren't intricate route runners.

Then you have to be able to have the feel to read coverages and adjust routes on the fly. A subtle bend to set up a route vs man. The feel to throttle down into the soft spot of a zone. Etc. Coverages can be disguised pre-snap.

There's a lot to it. Just like running backs have to have certain skills and feel to execute plays that appear to have open a simple hole on paper. Look at how much K2 improved. Yes, the O-line opened much better holes for him this season. But he was also a completely different back.

Very few track stars have turned into good football players

Great grab but will we just do Iowa things and not allow them to play to their strengthens but force Iowa coaches comfortably instead. I wonder how Iowa would look if we actually play the qbs by their strengths.
