Mark Perry: Game Changer

Heard last week that there is some sort of rift between Metcalf and Tom and Terry. Brent, with his new family didn't think that he should have been taken off the HWC payroll so soon after he quit competing and probably thought that there was going to be a place for him in Iowa City. Some of you aren't going to like this but I am going to say it anyway. Tom made $345,000 in 2015 and that is without camp money and his Asics endorsement. Terry makes $163,000 base salary plus camp money, HWC money and his Nike endorsement. There is plenty of money there to help Brent feed his family and it sounds like our staff turned their backs on him. In my opinion, Brent is the new face of Iowa wrestling. He shouldn't have been treated like this. Our staff should have done whatever it takes to keep Brent in Iowa City. Rant over.

So you think Brent Metcalf should be treated like a charity? You think our HC and head assistant should give up hard *earned* money and give it to a coaching neophyte who (according to your account) made his own bed? What kind of silly commie idea is that? Aside from the above, the very fact that Metcalf may very well be making MORE than Terry should give you enough reason not to post this silliness but as usual you're too hard headed to notice.

Oh, and another thing: You've been beating the drum for a move like Perry for years and now that we made the move, you actually find reason to bitch. And nevermind that we did BETTER than Metcalf.

You've outdone yourself here. Truly impressive.

2 sides to every story has never rang truer... Sometimes egos get bruised and sometimes its taken better than others.

While I love Brent, he seemed to be into hunting in various locations and doing Mossy Oak stuff after the Trials. Could it be that they wanted to know if he was committed to being around for another year and taking a break or if he was done or not? Not the first time I have heard this as well and it usually comes out of the anti Brands camp or folks that I know to be anti Brands...not saying that you are.

Unfortunately, doesn't sound like HWC had enough money to hire a full time coach at the time and it is ironic that Brent going to HWC West was the catalyst to our fundraising campaign. Worked out well for Brent...he is making some good cabbage over there and will see a rebuild from the ground up under a good coach. Worked out for us because we got Perry.

I'm definitely not anti Brands in any way. I love Tom and Terry. I can't disagree with anything you said I just feel like TnT almost turned their backs on one of their kids. It worked out well for everyone but I wish Brent was still in Iowa City.

I guess I should have started by saying that Mark is a great hire. I feel like TnT should have done anything necessary to keep Brent in Iowa City just like I think they should for McD and now Cory Clark. Those guys are difference makers in a room and will take us back to the top. We need to keep our Aces in our deck.

What does Tom and Terry's salaries have to do with the HWC? 2 separate entities, funded via different means.

I understand that. I just felt that Brent could have been given money from the HWC to keep him around.

Fair enough. But at the end of the day there are only enough dollars to go around. Can't keep everyone. And, dare I say, shouldn't keep everyone? Not because we don't love them, but that there are great experiences to be had elsewhere. Just ask Mark Perry.

Every singly person currently on our staff has been other places before coming back. We'll see more guys leave over the next few years, but that doesn't mean they won't find their way back.

I really dont understand this post. Are you implying Brent would have turned down the Iowa St. money for less money from Iowa?

I get that if the dude went to work at Walmart, but he took a job within wrestling that will pay him more then a lot of head coaches. He did that because of a rift? If so he has good timing.

If the Tony Ramos incident taught us anything, it's that TnT don't turn their backs on their guys. I guarantee that if money wasn't an obstacle Metcalf would still be there.

With that said, he's a cyclone now...

Brent may have done his part, even if not intentionally. Like Mark taking Illinois over asst at Iowa, maybe one day he will return home improved as a coach.

I like seeing Perry back at Iowa, but he is not a better option that having Metcalf.

I keep thinking that somehow Perry is going to be used to impact the Hawks and not the HWC. If he is only used as the HWC coach, then you guys are correct, not a lot of leg passing going to be going on. We will see if the Hawks start rolling around more and if his influence becomes apparent in their style.
