Matt VandeBerg

Well can't say I'm surprised. This whole Fall sports season has been a f***ing sh** show from the start (I'm a Vikings fan too).............

Only one real explanation here:

That sucks for Matt and the team. Hope he makes a quick recovery. Obviously need Smith, Scheel, McCarron Nash and Young to step up.

It is a bad break but we do have other players that just need to step up. Scheel needs to prove he is more than just a message board legend.

Some silver linings to this injury:
  • It happened early in the week so we have time to adjust and prepare a revised offensive plan. I believe Tevaun Smith was hurt late in the week last year, and the team didn't have the opportunity to practice without him before the Wisconsin game.
  • This could be the type of adversity that helps the team rally around each other. Teams under Ferentz seem to always do better when there's a reason to discount them. Most people this week were already saying that Wisconsin and Nebraska should be favored over Iowa to win the West. This injury could help the team feel like their back is against the wall and give them an extra level of concentration.
  • This should help the development of our young receivers. Scheel, Jerminic Smith, Falconer, Nash, and Devonte Young will (hopefully) be here the next few years, so it will be good for them to be forced into larger roles this year.
  • It's a broken foot, not a torn ACL, so there could still be a chance VandeBerg comes back later this year or in a bowl game.

With that said, this injury sucks big time. Hate to see this happen to a senior when he was playing the best football of his life.

My hope would be that this forces CJ to more actively look for open receivers. It feels like he'd gotten too dependent upon Meercat on critical plays. (Just trying to make lemonade here).

On the other hand, I had hoped Vandy would be our abbredaris this year. Was he on a path to get drafted? If so, impact to that?

I wonder if he will get a 6th year? Does anyone think he has a shot to make an NFL roster?

No chance he gets a 6th year.

Pat Angerer was going back and forth with MM on twitter and depending on what bone he broke he could be back in 6 weeks. That was how long Pat was out when he broke his foot. Iowa plays Michigan in 6 1/2 weeks, fellas.

Regular season? What if a team goes to the NC game and the player meets the 33% game criteria?

Bowl games do not count in the calculation of 30% threshold, although conference championship games do count. In VandeBerg's case that is the deciding factor because if we were to make a Big 10 Championship game he would be still be over 30% without the including the bowl game, but would be under 30% if the bowl game was included. In other words, 4/13 = 30.7% and 4/14 = 28.6%. Unfortunately, we could not include the bowl game in the calculation.

I realize he's not listed at WR but any chance Noah Fant gets utilized at that position? Obviously he's undersized as a tight end right now. Not sure about his speed, but could be a big target for CJ with Vandeberg out.

Got it, thanks for clearing that up for me.

That's logical, if you included bowl/NC games it would give a player on a good team an advantage.

It is possible that he'd be able to get a medical redshirt on appeal. There really seems to be no rhyme or reason to how they award them. The odds are low, but not impossible.

It's a legitimate question. Did he step wrong, or was he hit? How did Derrick Mitchell suffer a three-game injury in practice? Skill players should not get hurt in practice once the season starts.
Do they just sit on the sideline and watch? No conditioning, no lifting, no walk through? There are non contact injuries. Also they play football, it's a violent game.

Mitchell has a groin pull/tear. Perhaps to the degree CJ had last year. I'm no college athlete but pulled a groin once and boy o boy was that painful for a month, almost as bad as a pulled hammy.

You're correct it's a legitimate question, I was just joking and having fun with it. My son when he was a sophomore in high school tore his ACL the second day of practice when they were just doing sprints, so just about anything can happen.

No he was not on path to get drafted. He's not a surefire contributor or a high upside guy in the NFL. UDFA written all over him.

Really stretching here, but maybe this forces KF to empty the bag of tricks on the table and actually start giving opponents something to think about when planning for iowa. Similar to '04 when we had no running backs, KF reoriented the team around it's strengths and even got little creative.

Well we know that Northwestern will load up the box and make CJ beat them through the air now...

Yeah, I figured they would do that anyway but last year Iowa beat them when Beathard was banged up, they had a patch work oline and they still ran the ball on them. This will be the second weak in a row with a healthy oline and they are the best at run blocking.

This is the one injury that we couldn't afford. He is our only reliable receiving threat who produces consistently. This eerily feels like 2005 when Hinkle went down and our offense stagnated because we didn't have that go to guy.

Kirk and staff have to step up they're game and start getting better receivers on campus.

It is a big blow, but the next man up can sometimes surprise us all. Hopefully Scheel or someone else can be that guy.

Press Release

WR MATT VANDEBERG TO MISS GAMES DUE TO INJURY

IOWA CITY, Iowa - - University of Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz announced Tuesday that senior wide receiver Matt VandeBerg is out of action indefinitely, due to injury.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound VandeBerg suffered a foot injury during practice on Monday. He is a native of Brandon, South Dakota, where he attended Brandon Valley High School. VandeBerg has played in all four games this season, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns (19-284-3 TDs).

“It is unfortunate that Matt will miss some time due to his injury,” said Ferentz. “We know that Matt will work extremely hard to get back on the field as soon as possible. We feel confident that some of our younger receivers will step up in Matt’s absence.”

Iowa (3-1, 1-0) will host Northwestern (1-3, 0-1) in its annual Homecoming game Saturday in Kinnick Stadium. Game time is 11:01 a.m. for the contest that will air to a national audience on ESPNU.

Tickets are available for Saturday’s contest at hawkeyesports.com, in person at the UI Athletics Ticket Office in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, or by calling 1-800-IAHAWKS.

As mentioned, at least Scheel/Nash/Young, etc can get some reps in before Saturday vs. this happening late in the week. However, MeerKat is that safety valve and comfort zone for CJ, very tough loss. Expect Iowa to want to run 65% this weekend but the Purple Kittens will load the box, blitz and make CJ and this WR crew beat them!

We need a healthy DMX back, but at any rate Iowa had better be ready for pressure so get the screens, draws, flare routes ready because it's coming.

I really find it hard to believe that Iowa has only one solid receiver. Time for the other receivers to put on their big boy underwear and start earning their scholarship.

As long as CJ can get time to pass and get through his reads properly (which he hasn't done as well with so far this season), he'll be just fine with the group of receivers he has. Right now CJ needs to prove the hype he has received heading into this season.

Love MVB and this really sucks....however, could be blessing in disguise. We should be running the ball more often anyway with Wad and Daniels, now it appears this is going to force our hand to do so. Now all we need to do is have the ability to go deep 3-5 times a game when teams have 8-9 in the box
