Bummer. Best of luck at Purdue. They have some good things happening there.

It's hard to be mad at a guy like Ersland when the state of Iowa loses a talented wrestler. I know Max wasn't the second coming, but he definitely has lots of talent I would have loved to see develop in Iowa city

Good kid with a high ceiling. Unless I'm misreading, he didn't get an offer from Iowa, as it was between Purdue and UNI. I agree with others that he would've been good to have in the room, but I'm not disappointed that we didn't land him. He's low-risk-high-upside for Purdue and may end up a superstar. But we need to use our 9.9 to put NCAA points on the board, as we are with Kemerer, Marinelli, Lee and Teasdale. (And hopefully Warner and Berge.) Lyon's not at that level, at least not now.

I believe he had visits set up with Iowa and MSU also. Iowa probably didn't have much to offer him while they wait the outcome of Warner and Berge.

Lyon and Costello would be great to have in the room, but have heard Iowa has no/very little money for them. They would be great additions and seem to be great kids, but are likely not going to be high AA kind of kids.

I am hoping that we have no $ for guys like Lyon, Costello and others because we already have silent commits from Berge and Warner.

In 2014 we got Stoll
In 2015 we got Kemerer, Turk, Wilcke
In 2016 we got Marinelli, Young, Happel
In 2017 we get Lee, Warner, Berge, Murin, Troy
In 2018 we get Teasdale, Brands. ???
In 2019 we get Schultz, ???

Seems good to me. I like the trend so far.

Also, congrats to Lyon, hope he turns out to be a stud for Purdue and wins against anyone but a Hawkeye.

In 2020 we get Schriever, Happel ???

Id personal like to see 9 consecutive 125 National titles starting with Gilman this year, Lee x4, Schriever x4

All one has to do is look at those names above to see how quickly 9.9 can dissipate. It's clear why there was no money for Lyon, not to mention Mejia or Renteria, for example, and it's clear why we have to be very picky and place really smart bets.

9.9 Sucks! Are there any other collegiate sports where there are fewer scholarships than the minimum number of athletes required to field a team?

Volleyball gets 4.5 and soccer gets 9.9. Football at 85 is a joke!!!

How many people are on the field for soccer at a time? I think volleyball is 6, but at least they are girls with long legs and tight shorts, so I don't mind that too much. Soccer is like watching grass grow dormant.
11 on the pitch. 3 subs per match.

11 people on the field in soccer.

The NCAA scholarship allotments are based on an algorithm that seeks to answer the question - how much money Mark Emmert and his buddies stuff in their pockets without violating Title IX?

So at least we're not alone at the bottom :(

I think 15 is the right number...1.5 times the number of competitive weights. Let's make it happen!
While I think that would be great to field a stacked lineup for all the power programs would that just make the lesser programs worse and hurt the future of our sport when they cannot get "X" amount of decent wrestlers because they went to an IOWA or PSU instead? I think some would still go to other programs to start and AA. Just a question, not saying yay or nay one way or another.

We are seeing the reverse of this now with football. Previously, schools had no scholly limit, so they would get 100+ people on their team, all on scholarship. NCAA came in and set a cap on schollies, and you saw teams starting to gain some ground on the big dogs, and likewise, you're seeing FBS talent going to FCS schools (NDSU, UNI, Illinois St, etc). Those middle tier athletes would rather "drop" to FCS level than to go to a Sun Belt, WAC, Southern conference team.

Upping the scholarships for wrestling would decrease college costs for many of these athletes. Because the scholarships are so limited, even the best wrestlers rarely get a full ride. It's not like these athletes have the time to get a job during season. Contrast that with football where everyone's on full ride. It doesn't make any logic that some sports have starters regularly paying out of pocket, while others (football) have athletes on full scholarship who rarely/never get in the game. I know, old story...
