It's a long season and she has played a lot of minutes. She routinely faces double teams and lately a more physical style of defense.
A tough game last night, but than maybe it was only one game.

Tough stretch ahead, too, though Indiana got crushed last night in Lincoln.
at Indiana
Indiana
at Rutgers (easy win, but a tough team to play because of their physicality and the long trip can be tough)

She just looked out of gas last night. She had nowhere to go last night. A more athletic 6-2 guard w/super long arms guarding her and everywhere she went she ran into more athletes near the rim. And she gets zero help against teams like this.

It’s really the defense, or lack thereof that is hurting this team. That’s just my opinion, but when the other team is bringing the ball up the court, someone MUST stop the ball from penetrating. That is learned at about the 6th grade level, but doesn’t seem to register with the gals. Letting the dribbler get to the free throw line before someone decides to slow her down is way too deep.

also, we play defense without any flex in our knees, so that will lead to other team’s quick players blowing right by us. I don’t think calling specific players out is a good thing, but there are more than one culprit. If it happens to a guard, it almost always results in a foul on one of our bigs. They just weren’t locked in on defense, IMHO.

Maryland is way more athletic than we are. A very poor match up for Iowa. We have to have our A game against a team like that to win and we didn't.

Clark played just about every moment of the game last night and rarely had a free look. MD did a great job of switching and making sure there was always someone in her line of sight. She did look a little sluggish to start, but those things are going to happen in a long season. If it happens 2-3 times in a row it might be something to worry about, but her motor runs insanely high 99% of the time.

she was also bodied on just about every possession and was clearly frustrated by it. But the refs allowed it while calling Martin for several fouls for doing the same thing.

Despite that this game was lost by the defense, turnovers and lack of rebounding. The turnovers are not all on Clark. Several of the passes were very catchable or we caught and subsequently lost by other players.

She was bodied a lot but she's also starting to flop a bit. She had at least 2 plays where she threw herself into the defender and fell to the ground. and then she threw her arms up looking for a foul. They were clear flops. In the mens game they would probably be called. We lost because Maryland is just a way better team. And way more athletic. With these 2 rosters they would beat us 9 out of 10 games.

Yes we lost because MD is better. Rebounding and turnovers killed us. And Clark does initiate some of the contact. As do other guards. The refs did calls some offensive fouls on both sides for a change. But there was a lot of body contact that was unevenly called. MD was more physical and was not called for a lot of the bodying that occurred. Martin was called for several bodying fouls which should not have been called if they weren't going to call the same fouls on MD. The refs did not cost us the game though. MD did manage to get in Clark's head and frustrate her.

Sometimes your shots don't go in.

Also, Maryland timed their closeouts with Bibby differently which threw of Clark's timing.

injuries and the amount of minutes that are now being logged by a shortened bench really are taking a toll.

This was a tough year, losing so many contributors early and now late to injury.

Really looking forward to the the Freshman class coming in next year... they're going to add some dimensions that we sorely miss going against teams like Maryland.

Maybe she needs to slow it down a bit. 10 turnovers is way to many for a PG. Not all were her fault, but man, being a turnover machine is not going to get it done against good teams.

Bottom line, Iowa was poorly prepared and the lack of athleticism killed them. How many games has Maryland played? The staff new what they were getting from Maryland. Cannot question the effort. However, same mistakes over and over.

Rebounding and turnovers killed us
End of story.

It's the same story nearly every game - Iowa surrenders a boatload of second chance points off of opponent offensive rebounds,.... 2,3,4 shots. Mayland's Center was playing catch with herself off the backboard a couple times last night... throw it up ... miss ...ORB.....throw it up again...miss....ORB...easy basket. She was Wilt Chamberlain out there.

If Iowa had a rebounder like Markowski at Nebraska it would make a big difference IMO. Markowski pulled down 16 RBs vs. Indiana yesterday, often with a couple Hoosiers fighting her..... and she is only a freshman - hands down Big Ten Freshman of the Year IMO.

It's worth mentioning that Clark barely missed (like fractions of an inch from going in) on at least 3 three-pointers in the first half last night. If those shots go down, the story of Clark's night are probably different, and the game might well have been different too, even with our poor defense and lack of rebounding.

She'll continue to get bodied up the rest of the way out. I don't think her throwing her arms up every time she gets hit wins her over any points w/ the officials. I would tell her to take a different approach there - though I agree probably very frustrating for her to get beat up every time down the court....

Turnovers continue to kill this team and there doesn't seem to be any repercussion for making them. The cross court pass in the 4th (?) quarter to no one when Iowa was making a run was embarrassing good teams don't make those mistakes......A lot of forcing the ball inside too....They're obviously coached to get it inside, but when it's not there they need to move the ball elsewhere.......

i agree. Other players need to step up and look to create. Tomi and Kate try some, but not enough. And sometimes when they do try it's ill advised like trying to split two/three defenders.

All of the recruits coming in can create for themselves. I'm not optimistic about the rest of the year, especially with Warnock out.

Yep. With the attention Maryland was giving to Clark, other players need to make them pay. Pretty much if Clark doesn't play great against a good team, Iowa has a very small chance of winning.

Seems her stroke has come back. That was very impressive.
You know she still throws up some head scratchers, kind of like Jbo. That one late in the first half where she crossed half court, never even set her feet and went basically off one leg and let a 30+footer rip, nothing but cords. I was like, "damn girl". When your feeling it.......Its amazing to watch how motivated and confident she is. At times it makes her make a few mistakes, but you just can't put a leash on that kind of talent. 38 points AND 11 assists. She willed that team to a share of the crown.....

After the Ohio State, Michigan and Maryland gauntlet where we lost all 3 and we were down to like 7 healthy players absolutely no way did I see this coming. Plus she was getting beat to death out there every game and expected to totally carry the team on her back. It's great to see us back to full strength. What an absolute stud she is.
