I started a similar thread after the MSU game that got 3 replies or so. Many (and I'm guilty of it too) wants to complain about coaching in a close lose but few give credit with a close win.

McCaffrey totally out-coached Painter in the second half. Going go the 3/4 & 1/2 court trap defense totally disrupted Purdue.

And in this case, he did the right thing by not calling timeouts until it was necessary at the very end.

Very impressive!

Agree...fantastic back to back coaching jobs by Fran. And the team has guts.

Getting Clemmons going was huge as he had a mismatch on offense. Purdue running out of timeouts with over nine minutes to go also helped. Fantastic job by Fran and the players to pull that win out!

I agree...great, great win...the Lord has heard the cries of His people...and set them free from the Rose Bowl Pain and delivered to them a dramatic victory.

Great coaching...great decision to play Baer more at the end...Uhl...wow, take the big guy away from the hoop and hit the threes!

So many contributed...congrats to all of them. Hard work and never say die win out.

Super pumped about the win. One thing that I wish we wouldn't do is try to run the clock out with so much time left.

It seems that if we have any sort of lead, we just hold onto the ball and wait for the shot clock to get down to like 5 before trying to take a contested shot. We had been having success running the offense, and I wish we would have just stuck with it. I think that hurt us against ISU, and fortunately we were able to still score against Purdue.

I'm all for not rushing shots with a lead near the end of the game, but I wish we'd still run the offense and try to build the lead. I think we were only up 4 or 5 points when we started running the clock out with 3 minutes left, which is a lot of time to score 4 points.

Edit: I don't mean to sound overly critical, because this was one of the most fun comebacks I've seen in a long time. Just something I've observed regarding clock management that I think could be improved.

Well said, Revkev73. Amen.

Hawkeye nation has suffered enough. What an awesome comeback...in Mackey...against #14 Purdue...on Rick Mount bobblehead night. Iowa launches into the top 20.

I've called the guys out for playing like little girls in the past. Now I'm thrilled to congratulate on learning how to play like men...tough-minded, never-give-up men. Keep it going.

That was a great 7 man effort by the Hawks. Easily one of the greatest wins I can remember in 35 years. Playing a top 10 team in the road with the refs screwing us over left and right, with a 17? point come back. Utoff especially should get credit for keeping us in the game the first half and playing strong to the finish. I hope people stop calling out his toughness and composure. He is the best player we've had at Iowa in a long long time and we should appreciate what we have.

Yep. Back-to-back great games by Fran and his coaches. Masterful job of switching defenses. I don't know what he said to the guys at half, but they all came out with a purpose. I hope to see Jok and Uhl play with that much intensity for the rest of their careers.

Baer is sneaky good...what did he have, two blocks, 7 points, five rebounds, and good defense at the point of the press without being crazy....arms hanging low, waiting to pounce on a bad pass or flick it away...?

Bardo said..."That guy doesn't look like much of a player, but man can he play." Best announcing comment ever!!!!! EVER!!!!!

I'd like to know what Fran said at the end of the game when JU fouled the Purdue player with about 20 seconds to go. I saw Bobby Hansen and Dolph laughing on TV - it had to have been a classic. Btw, it's McCaffery, the football player is McCaffrey.

I thought the going with the smaller lineup in the 2nd half paid huge dividends. This is our 8th straight regular season Big 10 win.

Excellent coaching tonight boys. Hear hear.

Another night of big plays by the Bulldog, who shows ferocious tenacity in the press/traps. Again, seemingly always in the right place at the right time.

McC kept his cool in the face of some of the most dishonest officiating since the Valentine Massacre in the BTT. The boys just kept playing hard and were rewarded for the effort and the cool. Toughed out a win where no one was playing well.

One of the best weeks of the new century in Hawkeye boys BBall.

Hey pussies, were back in the game.

I originally posted the above in the middle of our comeback. Some of you people give up way too easily, and cry too damn much too. One poster went so far to say that Mike and Woody should "just stop." Well, guess what? Woody finished with 6 points and 7 rebounds, and Mike had 7 points, 7 assists, and 7 boards. Pretty good lines from both. What does this poster have to say now?

Tuna...just stop. Calling an "un-named" Iowa fan a pussy isn't appropriate for this board.

And...you can be a big boy and call me out like a man.

I have had a lot to say in several posts following the game. You can read them at your leisure.

MG and Woodie were both hideous in the first half...did you see it? They got to it a bit in the second half.

Woodie missing a dunk and bunny...that is not acceptable.

MG plays well and disappears...he came to life in the second half...all are happy about this...including me.

I am glad someone showed them my half time post...it makes me feel like part of the team, like an assistant coach.

Plus...Tuna...you are becoming quite predictable...not good for a man who "know words" "meanings" and "motives" so well...clean it up a bit.

Til the next time, Tuna Wordman But really...you need some better material... Surprise us all.

Yeah well, I called a win a day early. I didn't give up at all. Have faith fellas.

I love people waiting for the just the right moment to talk smack and don't post the entire thread until they have their "gotcha moment".

Just another example of why you want to support and have patience with a program when you have the right coach at the helm.

How many posters have littered message boards like this one with negative posts trashing the coach, players and program after every disappointment instead of understanding winning is a process with some valleys. He is in the process of resurrecting a program that was completely dead and has zero national reputation because of the debacle of the previous 10 years prior to his arrival. It's moving in the right direction and will continue to bear fruit.

Fran is a witch of a coach that so many have overlooked because we are not out there stockpiled with 5 star blue chip guys where you can mail in a coaching performance 95% of the time. He's doing it by coaching and developing players.

So if you cannot handle the pain and disappointment that comes with this journey then there are programs like Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. that will serve you better. For me FRAN IS THE MAN! GO HAWKS!!!

Fran looks a lot better as coach because Uthoff realized Bo Ryan was the Grinch and left Wisconsin. No Uthoff and Iowa doesn't win this game or compete for B1G title.

Uthoff is the best player to come out of Iowa that went to Iowa that I can recall. What a mismatch. Maybe my NBA prediction track record is mixed, but I think Uthoff may be the best Iowan in NBA in a couple years. I'd take Uthoff over fat boy Swanigan

Feeling a little guilty, Rev. It wasn't just you I called a pussy, and I didn't call you out by name because I figured people of your ilk would prefer to remain anonymous. As it turned out, I didn't have to. I doubt anyone would have gone back to page seven of a lengthy thread just to find the name of said poster. Anyway, you can't judge a player, team, season, or career by watching just one-half of a game. You should know this, but, apparently, you don't. You have yourself a blessed Sabbath, Rev. How's that for some new material?

Thanks Word Man...very predictable. Not new, however.

Ilk?...just stop...go to the basement and get some sleep. Mom will make you some oatmeal in the morning, perhaps.

Where was Haas & Hammons the whole night? I thought they were supposed to be the bread n butter...

Sometimes I wonder if some fans maybe enjoy bitching about a loss more than giving the players and coaches some love after a big win.

I don't think Mike and Woody played a horrible first half, especially Mike. He made several really good plays to get shots for other players in the first half, but Uthoff was the only one who could hit anything. Mike could have had at least a dozen assists for the game, if players had made shots they normally can make in the first half. The Boilers built most of their lead when Mike sat down. Ellingson was in above his head in the first half. I still don't understand why Woody can't make layups/dunks every time, but he played some great defense the entire game, not just the second half. Jok, Sapp, Uhl, and Baer didn't have a very good first half, but they played tremendous BB in the second half.

Hope Sapp is OK, and the team doesn't overlook Nebby, which is a pretty decent team.

One thing about MG...even if he is stinking it up a bit...he is always 100% effort...to his credit. Great comeback for him...he was a big part of it and deserve praise.
