Meaningless Bowl Games

Bowl games are like nfl preseason or regular season nba….knock yourself out.

Bowl games are where the camera operators are told to keep your shots low because we don’t want the tv audience to see all those empty seats.

Why would the TV audience care if there are empty seats?
Human nature. If there is no one in the seats, why watch on tv? And it’s more than obvious this has been done by the networks for decades, so please save the obtuseness.

It's never mattered to me. If the game is entertaining, I watch it. Covid must have been tough for some fans who base their viewing pleasure on in person attendance.

Exactly. It's not practical to travel to all the good bowl games. Hell, if I don't think the game is interesting, but it starts to be a close match, I can flip the tv on and watch for no cost. Cant be a butt in seat on a whim.

edit - fan bases that don't travel well due to distance or because of cost. Fan bases that are not rabid but more casual. Game location that sucks (aka Shreveport, LA). all sorts of reasons the in person attendance shouldn't matter.

It doesn’t matter to me either, but I guarantee there’s statistics that the networks look at. Also, it’s just a bad look to see a stadium half empty in general.

The meaningless bowl games will go away when cities, sponsors, and television networks start losing money on them. I don't think that will be happening anytime soon. Bowl games are as big a part of the holiday season as Christmas trees and New Year's Eve parties.

Obviously. The bowls will die a slow death in my opinion.

We'll see, but since the beginning of the BCS and 4 team playoff the number of bowls has increased not decreased. Maybe fans just enjoy watching games even if they don't mean anything. There are 47 D1 bowl games this year.

The Rose Bowl was the only major college bowl game in 1930. By 1940, there were five major college bowl games: the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl (established in 1935), the Cotton Bowl Classic (1937), the Orange Bowl (1935), and the Sun Bowl (1935). By 1950, the number had increased to eight games. This slate of eight bowl games persisted through 1960, but by 1970 the number had increased again, to 11 games. The number continued to increase, to 15 games in 1980, to 19 games in 1990, 25 games in 2000, 35 games in 2010, and 41 games by 2015 (40 games plus two teams playing a second game to determine the National Champion).

Just finished watching the Army game. I was rooting for Army but why the **** were they throwing the ball up 21 with a minute left? That was pretty shitty of them imo. Not to mention they had a lot of players talking shit and getting chippy after plays all night. Not a normal Army team.

Army's QB was 2-9 for 65 yards for the game. Passing doesn't mean the same thing for Army as it does for other teams. Running might be considered running it up for them. :)

The last 2 days of meaningless bowl games have been entertaining. Hopefully starting tonight the *meaningful" bowl games will bring the some excitement.
