LB: Jones and Niemann are clear leaders at LB. Other spots open for competition.
CB: Hankins and Ojemudia have separated themselves and all rest open to compete for backups.Freshman could work their way into sub packages
S: Hooker and Gervase to start but Stone will factor in. Still finding who is 4th and 5th.

KF happy with how team has responded to suspensions and think it will just be blip on the radar for kids who got suspended. Says team has really bonded. Likes the leadership they have.

Kallenberger, Ferguson and Levi Paulsen will be the guys competing for tackle in the first game.

RB: says Sargent is really starting to show some things and thinks there will be a three man rotation at RB. Says other three RBs they are excited to see what they have in them.

This is great to hear, takes a little of the worry away.

Was Hyde at Safety or corner when he was returning punts?

Corner. He only played 1 or 2 games at safety IIRC. He also didn't return very many punts.

Hyde on returning punts at Iowa: https://www.thegazette.com/subject/...idnt-return-punts-for-scores-at-iowa-20150928

"My junior and senior years I did it,” he said, “but we had a bunch of freshmen out there. So it was fair-catch, fair-catch, fair-catch. I never really returned the ball.”

That wasn’t quite the case. He had 13 punt-returns for an 8.2-yard average in 2011, and 16 returns for a 7.4-average in 2012. But he never seemed to demonstrate the flair for returns that he has shown in the NFL.

"When I got here and returned a couple,” Hyde said, “my coaches from back there were like ‘Why didn’t you do that here?’

His reply: “ ‘Well, you guys had freshmen blocking for me. I wasn’t able to do anything.’ ”

In talking about his fair-catches this year, Hyde said “That was a big thing in college. Coach Ferentz, oh my gosh. When you dropped the ball in practice, replays in my head right now. Catch ... the ball!

“No one wanted to hear that. In college I just had to catch it, had to catch it. It just stuck with me since.”

KF says that LB, DB, RB and DL are all positions where some true freshman could see playing time.
I'm thinking Shannon at DT because he's the most ready to go size wise. Man we really could have used Nixon. Not sure why he didn't just come here last year and redshirt but at least we have him for the future. I'd be surprised if Welch loses his spot to Colbert. If Colbert and McDonald don't start till 2020 that means Welch has gotten really good. I wonder if Colbert could play the middle over Doyle in 2020. Long ways away I guess.

Sounds like Linderbaum might be in contention for some solid reps, too. I think he’s gonna be a good one! Man, look at the 2012 D-Line compared to this year. I think there’s gonna be a lot of solid depth.

I was surprised to hear that Benson was getting some reps with the first team today, seems a little undersized, but if he can play, let him play.
