mejia not at IL?

4x California champ is an awesome accomplishment. Rare Indeed. But as others have pointed out, who ya beat is a better indicator of success on the next level than the state titles.

A lot of components go into winning 4 state titles. Beyond the obvious of being a great wrestler, the most important component is timing unless you are a talent that trancends generations of wrestlers. 2 of Illinois' best high school wrestlers in recent years (Gomez/Yates who are both IMO better than Mejia) collected 3 state titles apiece. They once met in the 3rd place match at state early in their hs school careers. That bracket had 5 or 6 kids that were nationally ranked at some point in high school. Timing.

Who were the kids Mejia had to go through to get his 4?

Edit*
Seth Nevills will likely be a 4x CA champ as well. How many top 5 kids at the weight has he beaten? Top 10? Top 20? I honestly don't know.

This year his 126 bracket at CA state had 4 of the top 15 kids in the country at that weight according to Flo. And 3 of the 4 were in the same section (central) so he had to beat them the prior weeks at sections and then again at state.

Plus at tourneys like Doc B.

You know how on the PDIII thread a few were like trust in Tom? I don't know about that with Downey but I do with this kid.

Thank you. Good stuff to know.

What about Nevills?

HWT was weaker in CA. Nevills only had one ranked guy (Flo #13) in semis but nobody else ranked in the bracket. His run at state was much more dominant with 5 falls in a total of 5 minutes. Watching Seth is like watching a clone of Nick in high school except Seth is 2-3 inches taller. Barring injury, I would be surprised to not see him be a 4x AA. From what I've heard he wants to get a crack at GS sometime this year after football season and they will likely travel back your way to make that happen. That being said, IMO GS is clearly the #1 guy in the country and would win at this point.

It's down to Minne, Iowa, tOSU....More of an urgent need for them than us unless he were to get to133

They have been pretty close to Mejia from the get go, so an Iowa tie to a school is not a given, IMO.

I expect an Iowa commitment today. I have learned a long time ago the when HIWILLIE like a post of this sorts, its for a reason. He wont post a detail but his like will speak volumes if you pay attention. I see that license plate parked way to close to carver at home meets for him not to be in the real "know"

I listened to the Mat Talk podcast this morning and reading between the lines, I'd be surprised if Mejia doesn't choose Iowa. It sounds like he really has a lot of admiration for Perry. Mejia said that just before they recorded the podcast he was talking to Tom Brands too. Sounds like he wanted to commit already but on the Iowa side, there were some things to iron out so that explains the delay.
