He's annoying to watch and is overrated
Honestly he was best player on floor tonight. When jok playing well announcers talk as kindly about him. Hate to say it but most clutch too tonight. Back to back 3s late and hit fts.
Both 3s on our "best player" too. My gosh we have too many liabilities on D!!!!
Catch 22 right now with our team. Getting burnt off dribble man to man leaving open looks inside and wide open shooters. Or zone giving up way too many easy looks for 3 and in the paint. As much as some want to criticize last years team the way they moved and communicated on zone was night and day. Too many times we have 2 guys get caught up on same guy and suffer from poor spacing leaving baseline wide open. Plus woody was very good in middle against high post and rebounding out of the zone.
However 2nd half zone was lot more active and players were in position lot more. Some had to do with lack of aggressiveness with Maryland compared to first half.
sure last year's team played better zone, but they didn't rebound well enough out of it to make it effective. In general last year's team was about as good defensively as any of Fran's teams, but yet they got azz whooped in 2nd half of B1G and had to rely on an air ball to beat Temple in ncaa. In short, they weren't that good by end of season last year.
I personally think lack of offense outside Pete and uthoff hurt them in the end. Early in season Clemmons, gesell and others we were getting so much more on offense on a consistent basis. Uhl night and day off bench beginning and end of season. Look at big 10 tourney loss and temple game 2 man show on offense.
Well I agree they ended up being a bad team because of the offense. Defensively they were solid but not spectacular. Maybe spectacular on defense for a Fran team.
Woody is missed so much defensively despite what his critics say.
After watching Melo in many games, the defensive strategy against him should be...let him shoot 3's but don't let him drive on you. Definitely not NBA material because of his shooting, imo.
I think of Trimble as just a good player. He is not spectacular, and hasn't really improved at all since his first year. He disappeared for a long stretch of that game, granted he did come up big late but his shooting hasn't really improved, his asst/to hasn't improved.
He was probably the 3 or 4th guy on their team last year but because of the year he had as a freshman and name he was elevated.

He is a veteran play who made big plays vs the hawks. I remember when he came in as a freshman and I think he had his worst game of the year vs Iowa.
To win on the road you need your older players to step up and that is what Trimble did vs Iowa.
Hopefully the hawks will figure it out before the Illinois game. Fran has to find someone who can play 1-1 defense.
