Would you please let the qb try to make plays instead of telling him just don't make any mistakes. We have seen this song and dance before, qbs regressing instead of improving under these coaches. Either Brian is no different than his dad or dad is still calling most of the shots. Watching paint dry is almost as entertaining as the hawks are on offense.

Iowa is not very good on offense right now - it remains to be seen if Iowa will be any good on offense in 2018. But there have a very good on defense. The only way they were going to lose those first two games is with turnovers.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I don't think entertainment is their goal.

Iowa does not have "edge" talent or "going deep" talent on offense. They don't have the freak athletes that take the ball away from defenders.

And the way Stanley is throwing the ball right now, "opening it up" probably won't work.

Message to Kurt Warner. Just cause that's your screen name doesn't mean you've ever thrown a pass. And passing the butter at supper-time to your Mother tonight doesn't count. Enjoy the 2-0 Just like I've enjoyed all the victories before this and all the Top 10 finishes. Brian n Ken know what they are doing - this isn't your video game where you turn it off after your INT - these matter. Now relax! Enjoy! And don't be late for supper when Mom calls you up!

Do you really think they're going to read your ignorant message, or are you just trying to show everyone how much smarter you are than them?

I don't think the issue with Stanley is Brian and Kirk holding him back. He just plain is not a real accurate passer at this time. I love the kid and I think he has a world of talent, but even if you go back and watch the Ohio State game from last year, his receivers actually made him look good on several of his passes. He had some beautiful passes, but receivers are constantly having to catch balls that are behind them or a foot off the ground. That along with our WR's probably not getting a ton of separation, dropping good passes and teams trying to take Fant away does not help. I think he will get there. The beginning of last year he could not hit deep open receivers, yet developed a touch later in the season. His overall accuracy has not been great, but I think it will come. When? Well, if I knew that I would be selling my predictions to coaching staffs. LOL It would also help Stanley if our running game gets a little better. But hey, we all know that Iowa starts the seasons slow and gets better as the season progresses.

And Rose Bowls...don't forget the Rose Bowls!!

If you haven’t noticed the offense has been the same regardless of coordinator. The first down zone run for one yard is a 75% probability. We know it, they know it, it still happens. Follow that with a 4 yd pass and move on.

The two do not always go together.
They go together rarely with our margin for error. We've been blown out maybe a couple less times than we've blown teams out under KF. I would think that's less than a total of 25 times (excluding FCS opponents with 65 schollies) in Kirk's tenure. Someone else can do the math and come back and tell me I'm a moron.

If you follow Iowa, KF has said many times he likes his QB to manage the game. He will never run anything other than what we see. It has worked for him, but is very dull to watch (most of the time).

I'll pass this on to them.

True, but he's also thrown numerous passes that were totally major league big time throws as well. A couple to ISM in last years ISU game. The TD to Fant running to the back of the end zone against, OSU, and the throw to Smith Saturday are good examples. He has the talent. As Spencer Tillman said during the game, he just needs to be more consistent.

Can't they be fun to watch while winning? Is that too darn much to ask:mad:

I have to agree with Kurt. For most--not all--of the KF era, the Hawkeye offense--or more to the point, the lack of it--has been the butt of national jokes and the angst of many a Hawkeye fan. So far this season, it's been more of the same.

If you watch football from around the country, you see Appalachian State, Samford, Eastern Illinois and other football powerhouses put offenses on the field from game one that are both entertaining and effective at moving the football and scoring points. As other posters and I have noted, Tyler Wiegers, the man who wasn't good enough to play at Iowa, burned Purdue by hitting 22 of 30 for over 300 yards, a 75-yard TD pass included, and another 50-yarder that hit the receiver in the hands in stride in the end zone but was dropped.

Wiegers sat on the bench his entire career at Iowa, and so he transferred. And look at him now...with NO experience at all. He riddled Purdue and looked like a veteran in leading his MAC team to victory over a team that embarrassed the Hawkeyes in Iowa City last season.

Samford led Florida State 26-21 with less than five minutes to play yesterday before finally losing. And Samford's QB and receivers were fantastic. I said SAMFORD against FSU!

Asking Iowa to put at least a mediocre offense on the field seems a mighty small ask, but when you continually play scared, I guess that's what you get. Iowa didn't play scared against OSU last season, but a week later they did against Wisconsin.

And finally, like it or not, KF absolutely is in the entertainment business. About 70,000 people show up seven Saturdays a season and expect Iowa to be both competitive and entertaining...you know, like Samford, Appalachian State, and Eastern Illinois. (Or maybe you haven't noticed that $90 million sports bar/end zone they just built at Kinnick...)

This statement is something that is said every year...why? Why dont we have edge talent? Why do we still run zone blocking to the short side? Why do we seem to always be an anemic offense?

Seems like every team has a passing attack that is more productive than ours. Probably 70% rely mostly on passing

I think it's possible yet that our O will have big days in the remaining games. We were missing our tackles the first week and got things figured out at halftime. We ran into a decent D our second week in a tense rivalry. We won't count the 40 we put on UNI next week. We will struggle against Bucky almost certainly. After that, I think we have some 24-31 points performances in the Big Ten. I think that's decent offense.

Clips of Ferentz saying this or it didn’t happen. Your arguing with your imagination.

I agree with your last paragraph, but I'm actually entertained by our product. I guess I naturally prefer defense based on my pup-HS playing days and ours is just top notch. I can't believe how they recycle these performances. It's technical beauty. They run an offense I wish we ran when I played. We did a wing-T with a quick snap and any D smart enough to follow the guards could beat us if they had guys who were also hitting the weights and conditioning. People say they see the same thing from our O year after year, I don't see that. People keep calling us a zone team. That's probably the scheme installed day 1 of camp every year, but we run so much less zone now. Under GD, we just throw to the flats. Now we don't. We throw to the seam and we still do play action and look for outside deep regularly. I have no issue with the play calling or decisions being made. I look forward to better performances from our offense this year.

This feels like a straw man. You said you enjoy defense.

35-3 hawkeye win
I see a great Hawkeye defense in both scores. Are you saying you like games where BOTH defenses shut down both offenses?

It is their job to find “edge talent” and “going deep” talent. I’m sick to death of watching his crap offenses and ultra conservatism in literally everything that he does. He isn’t paid generational money to be so conservatively boring. But he gets an annual pass from so many of you. Demand more and quit being so damn afraid

It would be pretty nice to pair a consistent and decent offense with our perennially strong defense. Can't sacrifice too much defense for better offense but we have to be able to do better. We will see if Brian can progress as OC and match that with improved skill players and OL to field a decent offense going forward. Successful years and great defenses will be wasted if he can't.

Didn't watch but FSU passed 46 times vs Samford! Wow - they got it figured out! Just imagine how badly they would've destroyed Samford if they would've thrown 70 times?? Probably by 75 points! Carry on!

I wonder how good this team could be with just half an offense. Nebraska put up more offense with a true freshman QB in one half than we did the entire game. Kinda makes you wonder?!

I understand what you're saying, but I think there's a philosophical connection between what we do on O and D. So far, we haven't really even been bending on D. This is atypical. We'll bend some yet this year. Our offense is designed to chew clock and play field position. We don't get super aggressive until we've worn our opponent down. I think we'll take chances more regularly this year if our D is this effective against better offenses.

My only criticism is with the first down play calling. If we run on first down every time, defenses are going to key on it and make things tough on the offense. I think a little balance could help the QB out.
