I have to agree with Kurt. For most--not all--of the KF era, the Hawkeye offense--or more to the point, the lack of it--has been the butt of national jokes and the angst of many a Hawkeye fan. So far this season, it's been more of the same.
If you watch football from around the country, you see Appalachian State, Samford, Eastern Illinois and other football powerhouses put offenses on the field from game one that are both entertaining and effective at moving the football and scoring points. As other posters and I have noted, Tyler Wiegers, the man who wasn't good enough to play at Iowa, burned Purdue by hitting 22 of 30 for over 300 yards, a 75-yard TD pass included, and another 50-yarder that hit the receiver in the hands in stride in the end zone but was dropped.
Wiegers sat on the bench his entire career at Iowa, and so he transferred. And look at him now...with NO experience at all. He riddled Purdue and looked like a veteran in leading his MAC team to victory over a team that embarrassed the Hawkeyes in Iowa City last season.
Samford led Florida State 26-21 with less than five minutes to play yesterday before finally losing. And Samford's QB and receivers were fantastic. I said SAMFORD against FSU!
Asking Iowa to put at least a mediocre offense on the field seems a mighty small ask, but when you continually play scared, I guess that's what you get. Iowa didn't play scared against OSU last season, but a week later they did against Wisconsin.
And finally, like it or not, KF absolutely is in the entertainment business. About 70,000 people show up seven Saturdays a season and expect Iowa to be both competitive and entertaining...you know, like Samford, Appalachian State, and Eastern Illinois. (Or maybe you haven't noticed that $90 million sports bar/end zone they just built at Kinnick...)
