Message to KF and Brian

Would you please let the qb try to make plays instead of telling him just don't make any mistakes. We have seen this song and dance before, qbs regressing instead of improving under these coaches. Either Brian is no different than his dad or dad is still calling most of the shots. Watching paint dry is almost as entertaining as the hawks are on offense.

There have only been 3 QB's maybe 4 in the Ferentz era that let it RIP and played to win despite what the OC/KF was calling. Banks in 02, Tate 04-06, Stanzi 09-10 (recall the pick 6's he overcame) and CJ 15. Some pretty good years.

If you think about it you're right. Don't know if Stanley has the balls to do. Mansell on the other hand...

That is a big assumption that the qb is told to not take any chances and to constantly play conservative.

With kirk as the coach you can assume as much. You couldn't ask for a better person to be your coach although many would like to see a little more creativity on offense is all.

Here is my KF Rules:
  1. Iowa would like a 55% run/pass ratio or more.
  2. Less turnovers with running when you have a new QB.
  3. Run blocking can mentally deflate a defense when successful.
  4. Sacks energizes a defense more than TFL's.
  5. Running 4-7 yards per down can wear down a defense and eat up the "time of possesion" clock.
  6. Let the other team make more mistakes/turnovers
  7. Win the battle of field position.
Conclusion:
  • When you are a primary run 1st team, defenses will stack the box and challenge you to make the pass.
  • Iowa does pass on first down...but:
  • We need better pass protection for success in the passing game.
  • Need to come out passing 10 plays in a row to disrupt defenses "stack the box" defense strategy.

lol, you know this how? From his pass to a wide open TE? Good god.

Not sure how Stanley isn't taking chances either. He has thrown several risky throws already in two games down the field. The problem is he hasn't been accurate at all and his receivers have dropped passes.

I'm sorry, but what does this mean? They ran different plays? The other QB's didn't play to win?

How about, those were 4 pretty darned good QB's. We're happy the coaching staff recruited them, coached them and put them in a position to win with some good talent around them?

Just a hunch on mansell. I don't remember to many shots down field but i agree the passing game hasn't been clicking.

I enjoyed watching our defense ... And, I do agree 100 with the OP. We've seen quarterbacks transfer out of Iowa and put up nice numbers (i.e. Shimonek, Wiegers, etc). Our QBs "manage" our offense. I know that is who we are ... but I admit I thought our offense would get a little more exciting under Brian ...

Last year against OSU: I loved the aggressive play calling. No predictability.
This year: Very predictable in our first 2 games.

Heck yes, I will take 2-0 ... but we better turn it up a notch against Wisconsin because defense alone will not win that game (or others - as Big 10 play begins).

C'mon Rusty. Plays that work look unpredictable. Plays that don't look conservative.

When some plays "work", like against OSU, other plays also "work", like against OSU.

BF might not be a genius, but he's not an idiot. I'm sure he has watched the OSU game a dozen times and is working to replicate that every week. The elusive offensive explosion is tough to duplicate, or we would see it every game.

Play calling is important and takes a gifted OC to get it right. But IMO, it is also overrated. There is more than one "magic call" that should work if you have a good offense.

It's not unreasonable to want to be entertained by what is supposed to be entertainment.
If like me you find defensive battles with final scores in the teens or even single digits tiresome there are options. I change to more exciting games often. Or you can always record it then skip through most of the boring stuff.
Venting here is fine, if that helps. Of course it won't change anything.

I'm a die hard hawk fan and really don't care to watch to many other teams. I like watching ISU play also as i root for all the in state teams. I just wish Iowa could look like they did against OSU last year a little more often.

Odd time for this conversation. Nate has thrown for 1199 yards and fourteen touchdowns in the last four games.

The offense has been putting a pretty creative play package in the last four games in the last four games. Stanley does get to grip it and rip it.

The Hawks have scored 90 points in the last two games. The offense is trending up it seems.

Not an odd time. Look back at the thread dates.
