Mich-Minny rules question

On that punt or kick off that went into the endzone.


The Michigan returner touched the ball at about the 5 yard-line, but did not field it cleanly.

It goes into the endzone, and he goes back and fields it, and is tackled in the endzone.

The call is a touchback, which we were told was correct.


However, the Michigan player stepped out of bounds after touching the ball at the 5, and then went back and fielded the ball in the endzone. My question: Is he allowed to do that after stepping out of bounds on his own accord?

From what I gathered it is because would have had to run out of the end zone with control and then back in to the end zone on his own.

If FIRST touching was in-bounds, then player goes OOB, comes back in and re-establishes himself in-bounds before touching the ball again, he's fine.
