Bryce Underwood, a Michigan native, is currently committed to LSU.

If Underwood flips to Michigan, the $10 million would be paid over the course of his college career.

Previously this season, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy made headlines when he said he would be willing to put forward $3 million of his own money yearly to land his alma mater a top-tier quarterback.

I hope UM pays the kid and he doesn't pan out. That's the only way this crazy system fixes itself. Paying 10 million dollars to an untested high school athlete is, at best, unsustainable. Thought NIL $$ was supposed to go to existing college athletes? Just another glitch in the system...

We can't compete with that.
Nor should we. Absolute nonsense, and no I don't care how he works out. If they're going to allow this crap to continue we might as well just schedule the Lions and the Bengals. How long do you think this will go on if say 20 teams keep up this nonsense and 12-15 of them NEVER win the championship? Just put your cash in a 55 gallon drum and set it on fire for all the good its going to do most of these teams. How did we get to this point where winning some games has become so much more important then all the good that money could do. Even more so, this CLEARLY points out the insanity that sports stars, movie stars, and now pod casters, assemble the fortunes they amass, and then this is what they choose to do with the wealth...

$10 million?

The kid could pay 50% tax and have $5 million left over. That's more money than most people earn after a life time of working.

He'll enroll in college and have very few expenses. So, he could put it in an investment account and if he earns 5%, he's got a $250,000 annual salary for life. And he's still in high school.

College football.

Again, THIS is NOT NIL. There is no service provided by said player other then pay for play. Certainly not if the money is offered him before he ever plays.

Exactly. Remember the slippery slope argument? Well, this was a sharp cliff straight to the bottom.

C'mon he is probably being paid to rake leaves on campus and do a little landscaping. It's all legit. Like any book deal for any politician ever.

Plus at this point trophies are worth nothing. They are simply bought. We once had a time when the media just decided who was national champion and that was lame AF. Now we have it where the national champion is simply bought and paid for and that too is lame AF.

There's no way this isn't going to backfire a substantial amount of time. A of these kids are going to flop. Not to mention discord among the players. At some point, unionization is going to be the only answer.

i've said this many times... the emphasis and priority we as a society place on entertainment is frightening. life has become too easy and people don't know what to do with their spare time.

Not so sure. It’s not like these people are investing money for retirement and need a return.

If they pay a kid and it doesn’t work out the donors position in life doesn’t change at all. Doesn’t mean they miss a house payment or can’t buy groceries. If it goes bad it might affect their mood on a Saturday afternoon.

The NFL should be able to draft High School seniors and pay their way through college. Become an NFL farm system.
SHOULD. The issue there is WHY would they. They already having a farm system training future players and they get to judge their skills for several years before deciding who they want. Its called the NCAA ad they have no motive to change whats working...

They expect a return for their money. If these players don’t produce they will spend the money elsewhere- hookers, gambling, yachts, something that gives them more pleasure.

I agree. I'm as big a Chiefs fan as most, but watching the Hunt family (billionaires) pay THREE players over 110 MILLION $$ a year, and then have the freakin audacity to tell the Jackson county tax payers if we don't pay to rebuild or replace their stadium they're going to move. I say if I donate anything it would be to help pay for the moving trucks. All this money thats going to these celebs has warped their sense of reality and their self worth, and they've lost sight on the world around them.

Agreed 100% 👍

The ncaa...if they even have the power...need to implement a salary cap. This is already out of control.
Read my mind…it should also be based on enrollment rather than saying ALL colleges get a $25 MM cap or whatever. Even with that, I am sure the dirty (read SEC) programs would find ways to not play by the rules…😉

I will agree with you to a degree.
What NIL has done is set up this scenario of pay for play which most teams except the big-name teams can't compete with.
Saddens me to see it go this way.

I think Elon should just buy the top 50 high school recruits for Liberty U every year and just go from there.

Looks like he'd get $3M annually so if he left in 3 years for the NFL he'd get $9M

But, who knows, LSU might counter! ;)

We have never and will never get the top QBs in any class anyway.

I wonder what Little Debbie paid Mahomes Jr, the top QB in last year's class (per Rivals; #2, per 24/7). The Georgia native was previously committed to Georgia from (May 15, 2023–Dec 18, 2023) until he flipped to Little Debbie.
