Michigan boosters offering $10M in NIL to the Top Quarterback in the 2025 class (Bryce Underwood)

Plus at this point trophies are worth nothing. They are simply bought. We once had a time when the media just decided who was national champion and that was lame AF. Now we have it where the national champion is simply bought and paid for and that too is lame AF.

Ohio State reportedly is paying $20M in NIL for this year's team. Imagine what Phil Knight could pay for Oregon's roster.

Go figure players getting paid to play the most dangerous sport in the country and fans are upset. Go out there and risk your life and health for our entertainment but do it for free. These guys should have been getting paid for the past 50 years. Get that money as soon as you can.

They have been getting paid. Free college education, room and board. Training table, professional coaching, professional weight training, tutors. All for a completely voluntary activity.

Cops, firemen, teachers - THEY should be getting paid!

Edit - I'm not upset with the players. I'm not even upset they are getting paid. I am upset that NIL is off the rails.

Right, the only competition deciding college football is now who pays the most. Like I said the trophy and the pride that goes with winning it now means nothing. (just like it did when the media just decided who was the best) It means less then winning the super bowl because of salary caps. It means less then winning the world series because of salary caps. It means less then winning at any other college sport because the bidding war has not reached those sports as badly YET.

$10 in the kitty from every Iowan and we are in biz.

Bryce Underwood, a Michigan native, is currently committed to LSU.

If Underwood flips to Michigan, the $10 million would be paid over the course of his college career.

Previously this season, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy made headlines when he said he would be willing to put forward $3 million of his own money yearly to land his alma mater a top-tier quarterback.

It would take every single Hawkeye fan whoring out their anus on OnlyFans to even get close to $10M/yr.

$10 million?

The kid could pay 50% tax and have $5 million left over. That's more money than most people earn after a life time of working.

He'll enroll in college and have very few expenses. So, he could put it in an investment account and if he earns 5%, he's got a $250,000 annual salary for life. And he's still in high school.

College football.

I wonder what Little Debbie paid Mahomes Jr, the top QB in last year's class (per Rivals; #2, per 24/7). The Georgia native was previously committed to Georgia from (May 15, 2023–Dec 18, 2023) until he flipped to Little Debbie.

We will see if he really is a whore at the end of this year if some other John comes flashing more money.

Too bad more celebrities didn't latch on when Clark was here, kind of adopt Iowa and be our sugar daddy and mommy.

At least we still have hope with wrestling and Iowa women's basketball.

All 70,000 seats in Kinnick get charged a $285 NIL fee for the season per seat. About $41 per seat per game. Doable. Would we all like it, probably not, but I would still keep my seats for sure.

Once AGAIN, try actually paying attention. Nobody is complaining about them getting paid, its where the money is coming from. 1) the "fans" should not be asked to pay for players. Thats absurd on every level. 2) Millionaires "buying" players will make it impossible for anyone but the top 1/2 dozen teams to EVER compete on the field. Do you actually think thats a good thing? 3) IF the money paid to players were coming STRICTLY from the schools and could be limited to that, then at least you could have a more level playing field for the P4 schools as a whole. Starting in 2025 the schools can contribute up to 20-22% I believe of their revenue (mostly from these ungodly TV contracts) to players in various sports. At least with that you could make it more uniform if you could then prohibit pay for play alone. Actual NIL should be policed were players would need to sign contracts for actual work, appearances whatever, and not this here's your bag of cash high school senior.

I'd add that comments like "they are doing it for free" are ridiculous and disingenuous at best. Try putting your kid through college for 4-5 years especially out of state, tuition, room and board, food FREE health care and specialists, and tutors like athletes have and come back with the the "free" comment. I know this is old school thinking, but these kids haven't been "playing for free" for the last 50 years....

I hope UM pays the kid and he doesn't pan out. That's the only way this crazy system fixes itself. Paying 10 million dollars to an untested high school athlete is, at best, unsustainable. Thought NIL $$ was supposed to go to existing college athletes? Just another glitch in the system...

I wonder if you can attach performance stipulations to this. Like must start x games, have x record, etc

Student athletes brah.

We saw a similar NIL deal last year. Tennessee’s QB, Nico Iamaleava, was the #2 overall prospect in the 2023 class. Iamaleava signed an NIL contract worth approximately $8 million with Spyre Sports, a collective that represents University of Tennessee athletes.

A 5-star, highly ranked QB like Iamaleava can potentially really change things. We have seen that with Tennessee this year; the Vols are 8-1 and currently ranked #7 in the country.

Iamaleava’s stats in 9 games:

144-221 (65%)

1,879 yards

11 TDs

4 INTs

He also has 215 yards and 1 TD rushing.

Be nice to hear a more detailed plan from Tyler and the AD with regard to what our framework looks like to be able to compete with these other large well funded programs. Say Swarm could bring in 10 mill and the AD needs to add an NIL type fee to tickets to make up the balance.

If you look at NFL seat premiums they are much higher, and that is only subsidizing millionaires and billionaire owners.

What you're proposing is basically the same thing where the fans pay this new tab to the tune of 10's of millions. IF Brad with the swarm can get large companies to join and sign players to marketing contracts, I'd be all for that. But if fans would have to make up that and then to add higher seat premiums this is just the fans footing the additional bill, and thats a hard NO in my book. I'd be fine if these big money schools. say 15-18 whatever, want to break off ad start their own league, I'd be all for that. Let them go. After several years where the majority of those teams don't win championships, MAYBE they'll come to understand how short sighted and wasteful this all is.....

Then you would stay home and watch on tv. We just need 70,000 per game to say YES and in my book if you buy top players the game play would be exciting enough to draw 70k for each game even at the higher price tickets.

This has nothing to do with ME. Take a freaking poll and see how many "fans" want to pay kids to play football out of their own pockets. This is ridiculous. WE already pay ALL the bills. Let the companies and Universities who have collected these millions pay players if its that important. And NO I don't care if it means we don't compete with OSU, Texas, Oregon, USC, Michigan either. We've been playing college football for how long 130-140 years. MAYBE 5 -10 have we ever REALLY competed for more the a close call every 10-15 years. This crap is only going to widen the gap, and the sooner the next teir teams realize that the better off they will be. Let the cash cows play each other twice a year like NFL teams do, and see how the bottom half like losing 4-5 games a year....

We already are, it is just the amount. That's the world we live in for now. People either pay up to compete and we should go get new fall hobbies.

Nor should we. Absolute nonsense, and no I don't care how he works out. If they're going to allow this crap to continue we might as well just schedule the Lions and the Bengals. How long do you think this will go on if say 20 teams keep up this nonsense and 12-15 of them NEVER win the championship? Just put your cash in a 55 gallon drum and set it on fire for all the good its going to do most of these teams. How did we get to this point where winning some games has become so much more important then all the good that money could do. Even more so, this CLEARLY points out the insanity that sports stars, movie stars, and now pod casters, assemble the fortunes they amass, and then this is what they choose to do with the wealth...
So, insanity rules the world of college athletics now, huh? And what do you suggest? Maybe we should just deny NIL and wait until the situation plays out in another decade or so. Whether you like it or not, if we don't participate in this insanity, we may as well suspend our athletic programs until the field evens out the way we wish it to be. Either that or we fire Ferentz and hire a coach that has so much charisma, he can talk great players into wearing the Black & Gold receiving only their scholarship and the perks that the NCAA used to allow. What are the odds?

We don’t have to get the #1 guy. There are plenty of difference makers further down the pecking order and in the portal. No excuses for the QBs we’ve had in this program over the past decade (with very few exceptions).
Iowa could do better just by dangling a couple hundred thousand on front of the best FCS QBs.

Not really salary. Are there caps on how much Mahomes can earn from outside work and endorsements?
No but there is on their NFL salary as far as team spending goes. Call it what you want. If you don't implement something most will no longer compete and in turn fans will tune out and college football will be over for 90% of us

Just saying you cannot put a cap on what a kid "earns" off the football field.
