Michigan has taken recruiting to a new level.

SEC is trying to protect their turf and don't blame them but I think it is perfectly fair for teams to have a spring practice in Florida if they can pay for it. Why not?

How is giving an athlete a free trip to Florida for Spring Break not improper benefits? Unless UM is willing to pay for the transportation, hotel, and meals for any non-football playing student who wants to go to Florida for Spring Break, this should be a no-no.

how long before the NCAA looks into how those kids managed to be in Michigan on signing day. but I suppose that Jimmy boy will just say they were on their official visit..

IA fans need to remember, THE Michigan fans were saying the same thing about RR and he's gone, then Hoke a true Michigan man was hired and HE GONE. the question is how long before Jimmy boy becomes the HE GONE coach.

PS Michigan can recruit on its name as it is one of those Blue Blood schools
only the ee were at michigan for signing day

No, that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying that a university funded vacation only available to the football team is the definition of improper benefits. I’m pretty sure the University of Michigan has facilities available for practice if there’s snow on the ground. If for some reason those facilities are unavailable, I’m certain there’s something available a short bus ride away.

Just wait, in about 5 years Michingan will be having a LARGE scale concert with a top name band playing. They will be playing the "benefit" card and turn into a fundraiser. Recruiting will become a joke before long.

So when the Iowa players went to Disneyland while they were in California Iowa should have gotten in trouble?

Not 100% sure on the specifics of this so please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't northern college baseball teams commonly head south during Spring Break to get in some outside practices?

Please all you have to do is look at what the SEC has been pulling for years over signing every year and the mighty NCAA just turns it's head.I LOVE what Harbaugh is doing he is poking the bear and the bear doesn't know what to do.Even Paul Finebaum who I loathe said the SEC coaches need to stfu because Harbaugh is making them look foolish.

Having all those celebrities there under the guise as a benefit for L. Carr's grandchild which just happened to be on signing day has raised the bar for all other schools. I wonder how so many of the recruits got there as they took so few locally? I believe they got six from NJ which used to be one of our major pipelines. I bet the Rutgers folks are not too happy about it.
They aren't but, neither Harbaugh or the Mi fans give a crap. We know we have the best coach in the Big 10 and some experts think he's the best in college football. That's why he can recruit around the country. Only the early arrivals attended, the crowd was all invite only. The Chad foundation is north of 120,000, last I heard, a big majority from the Signing of the Starts program.

Harbaugh is the best coach in the conference and the entire world knows it. It may have only been one year, but in that year he won the National Championship, I mean the Big, I mean the East Division, ok, but he did have a winning record. That's pretty good.

And he did consistently beat teams that the prognosticators said that he couldn't like Utah, MSU, and Ohio State. Ok, he didn't beat any of them, but he did beat all the teams that he was supposed to beat. It was a pretty good year.

And anyway, it's not about what actually happened, but what will happen in the future, and Harbaugh had the highest rated recruiting class in the Nation, well at least the Big 10... Or was it the Division? Ok it wasn't the highest rated in any of those, bit it was pretty good.

Come on Candid, uncontested best coach in the Big 10 ? And some experts think he's the best in college football? Here's a challange, bring us one expert who isn't purposely catering to the Michigan fanbase (and maybe even those) who seriously say that.

Harbaugh's a good football coach and he will have his share of successes at Michigan. But itf you're trying to bring it to the Iowa fans, at least have some credibility.

Best coach in the BIG ? Go back and watch the glazed look in Hairball's eyes on the sideline during the 42-13 a$$kicking - and I mean a$$kicking - by the Buckeyes in 2015. And this was after a couple of points difference out of Vegas. Remember those 3 shutouts in a row by UM during the middle of the season and some were even projecting them as the team to beat ? Great job Jimmah !Sorry, most fan's want to see some hardware before a coach is declared the best ! Oh, BTW, guess what coach in the BIG has the NC hardware to back up your claim ?

I'd agree that harbaugh has a lot to prove before anyone calls him the best coach, but OSU also had WAY MORE talent in that game.

What an idiotic post.....

"The Wolverines' innovative head coach said the full team will be spending its week away from school at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The Wolverines plan to hold their first four spring practices on the high school's campus and mix in some non-football activities."

Going down to FL to practice at a high school is pretty shady & tacky.
Also, they'll be doing more than playing football.

"Michigan is allowed to foot the bill for the team's trip to Florida thanks to a recent change in NCAA rules. A revision that went into effect at the start of the 2014 football season allows teams to travel for off-site practices and pay for "reasonable entertainment" for players while they are on the road."

I'm sure there will be plenty of "free/reasonable" entertainment ;)

What was so idiotic???

I don't think anyone is arguing that OSU didn't have more talent but to the tune of 42-13.? The only thing that stopped the Buckeyes in the 2nd half was the end zone ! "Jimmah" forgot to make half-time adjustments and coach in the 2nd half. And this was after Vegas had the game close one way or the other. Best coach in the BIG ? Give me a break !

Hasn't Iowa held practices in Des Moines? That is off campus. I know USD has been holding spring practices in both Sioux Falls and Rapid City (Black Hills) in recent years in order to bring the program to the fan bases.

Northern baseball, softball, and swimming programs have been going south for extended play/practice trips for years. Basketball programs have gone in European and Australian trips. Don't see how football holding training camps off site is mucmuch different.

Personally, if I am a player I think this would stink. I would hate to have my life disrupted and have spring break taken away from me. From a coaching perspective I would hate it as well. Too many distractions. I'd want my team focused on practice and practice only.

Both rose bowl teams were REQUIRED to go there...
Kind of hard to compare...

It's paid for is it not? The trip to California is paid for is it not? The food, the hotel, any other activities are all paid for are they not? Going to Florida for spring practice isn't any more of a benefit that going to a bowl game. They usually get some pretty good gifts for going to bowl games, are those illegal benefits? The idiotic thing is thinking is somehow an illegal benefit to go to another state and practice. In fall, camp , the team stays in a hotel is that an illegal benefit? Sometimes teams have a team event like going to a swimming pool or going bowling, etc. Is that illegal? As long as the school is paying for it and not the coach or boosters it is perfectly legal.

This is all paid for by Bowl money and all the money the game generates.
The rose bowl rakes in Millions of dollars.....and you're trying to compare it to a practice...seriously?
LIke I said you're a moron. Feel free to talk to yourself...I'm done lol.

Jim Harbaugh would have been first choice by every college looking for a new head coach in yrs. Maybe Urban, Sabin but the rest aren't in his league. Mi was lucky, a grad w the opportunity to change a sick program around and he did it in one yr. So much so, they are rated as 15/2 in next yrs ncg.

Only recruits there were the early enrolls. Get over it, you sound like the sec.

Smart move by Harbaugh. Sounds like is it perfectly within the rules.

But I hate it anyway. The escalation of college athletics just took another step up. If they can go to Florida, maybe next time they'll go to the French Riviera? Or, Hawaii?

But will it stop Jay Bilas and Jalen Rose from whining about the plight of the student athlete? Of course not. These poor kids and being taken advantage of by the evil colleges and university and must be paid! Incredible.

We just had a thread that disclosed athletic revenues by school. The amounts are staggering, but there seems to be no end in sight to the amount of money that can be raised, and spent, on college sports.

And to think, the donation revenue that drives all of this largess is TAX DEDUCTIBLE, leaving even disinterested taxpayers to foot the bill and increasing the Federal deficit. (Heck, most of the ticket revenue is probably being improperly deducted too).

I simply must find something else to enjoy with better motives than college athletics. What are the Kardashians up to these days?o_O

This is the year Michigan has a good chance to beat Ohio State because of the early exits to the NFL...they will be very young. Urban is loading up a tremendous 2017 recruiting class, so Jimbo better enjoy this year.

If it wasn't for football the taxpayers bill would be much larger. I could come up with about 200 things that are more responsible for increasing the Federal deficit.

Please explain how college football saves the taxpayers money. I'm guessing that you are assuming that college athletics is somehow required in public institutions, and that football pays most of the bill. Well, what if there were no college athletics at all?

You sound jealous. Our coach decides to hold practice in Des Moines, IA whereas Michigan's coach is holding practice at IMG Academy (which is a high school football powerhouse) in the heart of recruiting country. Figure it out already.

It all seems gimmicky to me. I think it's funny that a school like UM has to do it. It shows how far they have sunk.

And yes, Harbaugh is a good coach. He's no Urban Meyer tho. IF JH can hold his own vs OSU and Urb, then I will give him his props. Now it's all talk. Hell, Hoke had a better 1st season than JH.

Flipp'n channels, and I think I just saw JH on the WWF wrestling show that is airing on the USA network... He was standing in front hyping up the crowd...Not that is actually important, but was that him?

Props to Harbaugh on his originality in recruiting and the publicity he is getting for Michigan. Much like Trump, he knows how to play the press and keep the Wolverines in the news. However, on the field he needs to prove he can beat Urban and Dantonio a few times in a row, to prove he's the best. Until then, he's # 3, at best. I think this might be the year he can get a start, since Ohio State is reloading. After that, Ohio State will be Nat. Champ caliber again. Time will tell if Harbaugh can be the top dog!

He won't be the best

In the end Harbaugh may end up being the best, but he isn't as of yet.

Candid was incorrect due to his overzealous claim that "we know we have the best coach in the Big 10 and some experts believe the best in college football."

If he said "we think he's the best", while still open to debate, it's a subjective statement. Regarding experts believing he's the best in college football, give us a name. One of the best sure. The best? Right now not only is he behind Saban and Meyer, but there Several others who could be above him as well.

Wait, two teams from ACC are traveling to Ireland. That doesn't cut into personal or class time/? give me a break, maybe if Mi hadn't kicked Fla ass in the bowl the sec wouldn't be so anti Mi. lol
