Apparently tried taking off for DC today and there was heavy winds. The plane slid off the runway and sustained serious damage.

Everyone on board is okay, but damn! That stinks

I couldn't imagine trying to focus on a basketball tournament the day after my life flashes before my eyes. Will be interesting to see how those kids do.

They are still trying to get to DC, with a game tomorrow! Yikes!

Makes you wonder, with the high winds, why the pilot even attempted taking off.

From ESPN.com:

The plane sustained extensive damage, according to the statement, but all passengers evacuated safely. The statement said Michigan is making alternate travel plans.

In a text message to ESPN's Andy Katz, Michigan coach John Beilein said, "All OK! A few guys a little banged up and shook up Blessed we did not get up in the air."

There has been a high-wind warning in southeast Michigan for most of the afternoon. Ann Arbor has had sustained winds of 35-40 miles per hour and gusts that topped 50 miles per hour.

Michigan plays Illinois on Thursday at noon ET in the second round of the Big Ten tournament at the Verizon Center.

Wow. This was from 4 pm CT: It will be interesting to see when they get to DC and how they end up playing tomorrow.

Thanks, all, for supporting @umichbball. Everyone is safe following the accident. Info will be limited as team works out new travel plans.

Wasn't me. But I did experience my first 50 mph winds during takeoff and landing today. It was a really shit day to fly other than a blue sky.

They might have to move the games tomorrow. Michigan/Illinois is game 1 at noon. Find it hard to believe that game will be played at noon if Michigan can't get in until tomorrow. Maybe the 3 games all get moved up and those 2 play last tomorrow night.

This is my uneducated guess. Which is a ok with me. I can drink legally during a 330 tip but not 530. Have to keep my emotions in check.

Baseballer what types of crews fly these chartered jets? Are they as experienced as the crews that fly daily numerous times for the larger carriers?

Glad every one is OK, but I was counting on Michigan to know Illinois out of the tournament tomorrow. Hope they can arrive safely and get the job done.

They are yeah. Usually they are airliners that are charted out. In this case it was mainly a freight company that also will operate sport and military charters.

I fly out of Ohare today on a Jumbo taking off to the West.
Bumpy as hell and seemed like we were not even moving and barley climbing .
Nice strong headwind will do that to you. In a small single engine plane you could easily get the plane flying backwards at a decent speed today.

True I suppose, but have you ever looked up sports plane crashes? Of course, some of them are years back like losing the entire USA boxing team and the entire ice skating team. Then there are the loss of most of the football teams, at Marshall and I think Wichita.
Hasn't Oklahoma State had two crashes? Manchester United in 1958, Il Grande Torino in I think the 30s and Chapecoense just last year. When plane crashes do happen, more people are killed at once and it's more likely to make the news. That's what makes it stick in the public mind and make planes seem scarier.

I have a bit of trepidation when I board a plane. It's hard not to. You're being flung thousands of feet into the air in a metal tube. You also have no control, which is another reason people feel more vulnerable in the air than on the ground. Just putting that out there to help combat these feelings.

Another thing to consider, runway length is only 7500 ft long. That plane fully loaded up probably takes at least 5000 ft to get airborne.

I wonder how fast the plane was going when the decision was made to abort; can't be easy getting stopped!
I am on a similar sized plane and I would say our average go/no-go speed is 120-130 knots. (Too lazy to do the conversion). I would bet getting airborne at least 20 knots more.

I hope your "Everyone" and "Unless I'm driving" comments were supposed to be a joke, because they are both absolutely ridiculous.

If you're talking about driving compared to YOU flying the airplane, then you're probably right.
Well yeah because I would never be on a plane to begin with, especially if there was any intention of said plane leaving the ground.

Face it, flying in planes should be illegal. Stop doing it now, people.
