The risk of re-injuring the ACL reconstruction increases if he wrestles this year. 9-12 months recovery is the minimum for an athlete. With a future like Lee's why the hell would anyone push it. I'm not following this pull-the-shirt talk - it's flat out crazy and irresponsible.

It depends on what his doctor says. If the doctor clears him to wrestle and tells him he is not at anymore risk this year vs next year, than those arguments are null and void. Each case is different.

No idea. He has never been on bottom long enough for me to get a good evaluation of him in that position. I've seen him in the Ironman twice and he steamrolled some very highly ranked guys, but even against those high ranked wrestlers, he spent next to no time on bottom. Even in his infamous loss to Austin Desanto in the State Finals, Lee was let up immediately by Austin when he got to the down position, to start the period when Lee chose down as well as post takedown.

I think he will need to get some experience down there like a lot of top recruits. However, unlike some guys like Micah Jordan, it clearly isn't a glaring weakness right now.
I think more often than not if you're good on top, you're also pretty good on bottom. It shows you've spent considerable time working on your mat wrestling. Lee is great on top, and I don't have any concerns about him on bottom.

Fair enough. For me the bigger issue is that we're not going to win a team title this year with or without Lee, and we'll need his 20+ points to win it 5 years from now. Team goal this year should be placing top 4 to avoid perception of slipping further and hurting next year's recruiting. I'm counting on Downey's 20 points to lift us from 7th to 4th. I see no good reason to burn Lee's (or Warner's) redshirt just to get us to 3rd.

And this is the argument (in my mind) keeping him from going. If he's not ready to go by Midlands, so be it. If he is, and looks great, going to be hard to keep him from not going (individual wise). Otherwise, I think its best for the him and the team if he gets bigger.

I'm in the camp, that I don't see the reason to redshirt him if he is healthy and would be in the hunt for a national title (top 4). You're holding him out for 5 years from now. So much can happen within those 5 years that to me it doesn't make sense to hold someone back for that. The team could be even worse in 5 years, McHenry might be the next Kyle Snyder and easily beating Lee, he could get injured anywhere in those next 5 years, Lee might not like Iowa and miss home and go back to wrestle for PSU. Not saying any of those things will happen, but if you hold out a guy who is ready to wrestle for a title for some dream of what might be 5 years down the road doesn't make sense.

If he's not healthy, or not ready to compete for a championship this year, then you redshirt him because he needs to heal or develop. Similar to Bull last year. He wasn't ready to compete for an AA, so he needed to develop.

First off a 100% healthy is 100% healthy. Holding a guy out past that doesn't make him 110%. If Spencer is indeed cleared and at 100% athletically then I have no issue going this year.

The question is do the coaches sandbag and wait to get him on 4 better teams. I use to think that but now I have changed my mind to what I believe the staff and the parents are thinking. They want his 4 best years healthy. Now given his knee and his shoulder have had major issues its not that crazy. IMO I think he could go and be healthy and win 125 this year. He is THAT good. I am starting to like the fact that he could keep a RS or a OLY year in his back pocket in case he reinjures something in 2-3 years down the road before the season starts. Plus I also believe it helps recruiting a tad as you can sale a guy like Teske that Spencer will likely sit at some point and we can mix you in as a starter.

Im all for Spencer getting his 4 best years healthy and nobody can promise me he can RS this season and then be injury free 4 straight seasons. I like having his RS on the shelf just because I am not buying something wont pop up.

Tarp you want him starting 5 years from now and he still could be. Worse case is he was healthy 4 straight from now and you dont. Ill take those odds. Means we got 4 straight healthy postseason from the best recruit I have ever witnessed. Oh Darn.

Plus think about the recruiting boost when Spencer takes the mat and is a god again this year. That's going to influence a lot of high P$P kids that Iowa is cool again and dominates now versus next year. Lets start that mindset/image/brand sooner than later. He will be the poster child catalyst.

I'm good with all that but I would rather the catalyst be at nationals where everyone sees Kemmerer beat Nolf and/or Sorenson beating Zain. That would bring that mindset/image/brand back home.

An ACL reconstruction is 6-9 months, not 9-12. I played in a basketball league 6.5 months after my ACL and PCL reconstruction and that was with me missing rehab sessions and not having competitions coming up. A successful surgery and a motivated individual like Spencer Lee should be ready to go hard in the next month.
