I must confess I don't watch a whole lot of college, NBA for that matter, but it would seem to me that Garza has got to be in the discussion for both Big Ten and National. But, as I said, I don't watch much b-ball so I really don't know who would be in that discussion. Now if Garza would be a Blue Devil or a Tarheal or Spartan the discussion would already be done for not just midseason, but the whole year.

Although Garza has been playing his ass off, I think the team as a whole is going to need to finish strong for him to have a realistic shot at the the B10 POY.

In the last 20 years, only one player won the award when he was on a team that wasn't ranked in the top 25 at the end of the season. (D.J. White on the 2008 Hoosiers squad that still finished 3rd in the conference). In the remaining 19 years, every B10 POY was on a team that finished ranked 17 or higher in the final ap polls.

Personally, I have not yet seen a B10 player this season as dominant as Garza. If Iowa finishes in the middle of the B10 pack, I suspect he won't win the hardware.

Winston (MSU) will most likely be the B1G POY. Luka would probably be the runner up at this point. Lots of good centers this year, so just finishing first-team all B1G would be a really good honor.

Yeah I think he's going to get Keith Duncan'd this year for some awards because he kinda came out of nowhere. If it's close they'll go with the guy they anointed in the preseason like Winston or whomever it may be

No Iowa player has won the men’s Big Ten POY. You have to go back to 1968 for our last Chicago Tribune Silver Basketball winner in Sam Williams.

Since the Big Ten started giving out POY in 1985, only 7 schools don’t have at least one winner. The 4 most recent additions plus NW, Iowa, and Minny who had one but vacated it (the one that should have gone to Andre).

If Garza doesn’t win it this year for what he has done assuming he keeps it up, expect Maryland to win one before Iowa does.

Andre Woolridge became the first player to ever lead the league in scoring and assists and played for the 2nd place team, so no fattening stats in shit games.

Not player of the year. That's not a thing for an Iowa player, no matter how good they are.

I think Magic was the first? Regardless, Andre got screwed for B10 player of the year by the documented cheaters at Minnesota.

Garza is the frontrunner at this point. He's outplayed everyone he's played against in a league full of great bigs. Winston has also missed a game already.

Individual honors are rarely, exclusively about the individual.

If Iowa is out of the top 25 nationally and 7th or lower in the league I don't see him getting the POY award. He'd most likely have to do something like have ridiculous statistics to overcome mediocre team performance.

I remain annoyed to this day that Woolridge didn't get the award. No one player was more responsible for his team's success in the league that year than Woolridge. Iowa would have been a sub .500 team without him. Iowa finishing second in the league standings to the cheatin' rodents was mostly due to the guy who led the conference in both scoring and assists.

Couldn't agree more.....with that bold part.

Also I think we would need to finish in the top tier of the B10 for Luka to be a serious contender....when do they decide on the award? Is that before the tournament or is that at the end of the season?

Right now, it is probably a 3-person race--Winston, Garza, and Oturu, who has numbers very comparable to Luka. Oturu is second in scoring and first in rebounds, with a high shooting percentage, including a decent 3-pt shot. I would vote for Luka, but I am a little biased :). Hawks will need to finish at least .500 for Luka to win, and he will need to continue performing at the remarkable level he has played so far.
