Either it is or it isn’t time to move on from Ferentz

He’s a good coach. But it’s also time to move on. The “dynasty” style coach who’s in place for 20 years only works if you’ve built a dynasty. At some point he became bigger than the program, and that’s a problem
I 100% agree with the bolded. As far as as his ability to coach in the modern era, I think he's been average at best. He has a lot of strengths as a leader overall but he also has some very clinical deficiencies.

He deserves a statue here, no doubt. He also needs to realize that his number of detractors is growing in greater numbers each year and for good reason. He'd be wise to not stay any longer than by the end of next season. I fear he's too stubborn to acknowledge this and he'll stay another 5-7 years at least. That'll really limit our program in terms of potential. We're already hamstrung with NIL utilization and transfer portal usage. That won't change with KF.

He's always taken criticism far too personal in my opinion. He really could've benefited from listening to it rather than always brushing it off. The man has been out of touch for the last 15 years at least.

The painful truth is this:
1. Kirk has earned the right to walk away when he wants. He is not getting fired, ever.
2. Just like Hayden, he is waiting too long.
3. When he does step down, we are going to really suck for a while.
4. The longer he stays, the longer it will be until Iowa is in the mix for a playoff spot, if ever.
No personal offense, but why do so many people automatically assume this??

I'm not saying I expect a national championship in year 1 with a new coach, but new does not have to automatically equal 'suck'.

Hell, just look at Indiana, who is 10-0 now with a brand new coaching staff and system. They finally "struggled" today, but every other game so far they've dominated - at least on the scoreboard.

The Iowa football team is as bipolar as our fan base. Either it is or it isn’t time to end the Ferentz era.

After the first half of the Minnesota game, I said it’s time. My opinion hasn’t changed. You have to look at the whole body of work and not just knee-jerk react from one week to the next.

Folks, it’s been time. The program is stale. Recruiting is a joke. As good as Phil Parker is, even he can’t overcome the athletic/talent deficiencies in the secondary.

It’s wonderful that Iowa beat the piss out of a Wisconsin team that is a shell of its former self (and has been even before Luke Fickell). Neat-o that Iowa took it to a Washington Husky team that’s about to be .500 today. None of that changes the reality Kirk can’t or won’t evolve.

Oh, and @CookyMonster, you are more than welcome to read my comments to any call-in show your corny ass chooses to. I appreciate your infatuation with me, although I must confess I was a little disappointed your weird, creepy self didn’t tag me in a post this weekend. Weird.

@curtisj157, you are poster of the year. Iowa can and should be better than…well, you can finish that sentence better than I could.
IT ISN’T ! By the way, I thought you were out of here weeks ago !

He never said he was “out of here”…he said he wasn’t going to watch them anymore. Whatever happened to reading comprehension?

They'll get 7 or 8 wins and play in a bowl game. That's good enough for the majority of casual fans and donors.
Like the OP, I've been ready for a change for years. Hoping that Kirk would have gotten the itch to go back to the NFL a long time ago. That would have been a win all the way around. Now I've come to acceptance. He'll be here for however long he's here. Could be 4 or 5 more years. I care just enough to watch parts of some games and check out the conversation here. Otherwise, meh.

It's past time. This is not an icon on the sidelines overseeing a well-oiled machine. It's a program that is struggling to define itself after yet one more attempt to find an offense. Kirk lost me...and many others when he went all-in on Brian. That should have been the end.

Because of the changes associated with NIL, I wouldn’t be surprised if Kirk hung up his whistle sooner rather than later. Maybe even after this season.

Is Kirk at 60% wins now? He might have to decide between the Hall of Fame or B10 winningest coach if he continues into next year. Guess if you think you can win 6 of 10 each year, you can continue on. Not a lot of room for error, though.

Are we sure he even cares about the HOF? It may not be a barometer for him at all.

No he has not. JFC people, the Iowa football program is not here to serve one man. Get a clue. Where do people come up with this shit?

Kirk walks into the AD’s office next week and declares that he wants to coach at Iowa until he is 77. According to your ridiculous contention, Goetz has no choice but to extend his employment contract though the 2033 season. Utter nonsense.

Yep, been a season ticket holder for essentially the entire Ferentz era….the whole Brian thing just totally pushed me off the Ferentz wagon.

It’s time for a change. I believe Beth has the fortitude to encourage that change.

He has not earned shit. Any goodwill he earned was used up over the Brian situation. He’s in the red as far as I’m concerned. Fvck Kirk. He’s not this saint some make him out to be. If next year we are sub .500 he’s gone one way or another, and good riddance.

The loss of divisions will hasten his exit. For years, we’ve been able to pad our records against the 70’s era teams in the West, only to get our asses handed to us every time we played a team with an inkling of athleticism and innovative play calling.

It’s either adapt or die time and I’m not confident KF or Phil has the stomach (or ability) to do it.
Phil can stay, he has adapted with the CASH and he blitzes more and makes it work and his system works. I hope Phil looks at portal Dbacks with a little more speed. And Dbacks should love to come here with Phil's record of Dback development with maybe 4 to 5 in league right now.

Lester is trying but the offense is just not loaded with skill and speed. The OLine is better but not great, we have very good running backs usually, but no star QB and the WR room is avg and thin. And the thing is I see tons of great WRs all over college football of all levels

Kirk should get his coaching wins record and then look to retire.

Beth should get the best possible coach from where ever with a focus on great recruiting and offense.

Sounds like you had a bad week. Hahahahahahaha

Coach Cignetti from Indiana says hello.

That’s one. I can show you plenty of programs that struggled to recover from a coach who stuck around too long.
And IU still hasn’t played anyone. They squeaked out a win against a bad Michigan team in Bloomington. Let’s see how they do against the Buckeyes in Columbus two weeks from now.

Here is what I think will happen:

Kirk will be here until he breaks Woody’s record, which he will likely get next season. He will then retire as coach, but not until the summer of 2026 so that his successor will have to come from his staff. That will be Kirk’s farewell FU to Beth. Hopefully the coach (probably Seth Wallace) will only be given a 1 year provisional contract.

In any case, buckle up Hawk fans….next year is going to be rough.
From a person fairly connected. When Wallace promoted to asst HC I was little surprised since Kirk has never done and Wallace over Lavar and Phil. Said Iowa knew and kept secret one game suspension for Kirk and promoting Seth was a way to keep him happy and from listening to other schools for DC positions.

1. No he hasn’t nor should he or any coach. But I agree about ever being fired.
2. Sadly yes he is.
3. With portal and NIL easier to rebuild. Thing is no one has any clue how Iowa will be after he leaves. It is a crap shoot depending on who we hire. Even then how many times have home run hires flamed out (frost) and guys people skeptical of do well (point and case Kirk when he was hired).
4. Agree as well.

So if Indiana loses at #2 Ohio State, that is enough to sully your opinion of Coach Cignetti? How do you justify your support of Ferentz? They blasted their way through their schedule. Can't do more than that. On the other hand, we have sputted and spurted through a similar schedule with a lesser record and an obviously inferior team. They have sold a ton more tickets than that program is used to demonstrating the enthusiasm of their fan base, while our full house watches three and outs all game long and shake our heads.

Your point about the B1G West is legit. But our bowl game performances have been a mixed bag against SEC and other athletic teams.

Our lack of innovation on the offensive side of the ball is maddening, and our recruiting about equal.

Is Cignetti having his 2002 Ferentz this year, or is he going to stay and really elevate Indiana? If you feel like Indiana can hit up on the right guy no matter the odds against them, you must move on. Iowa is a much better program than Indiana. Maybe they hit on the right QB transfer, the right schedule ( no top 25 opponents thus far) and all of this historic year is like Kansas 2007. But Indiana is blowing out everybody they face, including a road win at UCLA.

Iowa needs to move on, It is time , Iowa is going to be very young next Year and promoting from the Staff or bringing in a fresh face makes the most sense when You have a young roster . The only Coaches on the offensive side of the ball that should be on Staff next Year are Lester , Betts and Hodge , rest have been epic failures as has the S&C staff, Iowa got prison showered on both sides of the ball by a cream puff west coast Team . Both sides of the ball . Not acceptable . Been since the 1999 Team since I saw Iowa get absolutely manhandled like that by a average to below average Team . There are no excuses left .

Phil got pulled kicking and screaming to Cash by Wallace who had been wanting to move to it for a few years prior. Phil’s defensive stats were built on the backs of B1G West opponents, plain and simple. He’s a great developer of dbacks, but not of overall scheme against more athletic offenses or offenses that have serviceable QBs.,
