We have a new team this year with plenty of new faces. Time to bring back Midnight Madness and have a basketball party to showcase the new guys. I think it could be a great time, and perhaps conjure up some student interest!

When was the last time our students were joined at the hip with our basketball team?

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer. I base this in strong opinion. I wish we gave our team the crowd support others did.

I agree 100%. It was a mistake to eliminate "Midnite Madness", imo. If anything, they needed to enhance it to get the student body more involved and excited about the program.

I don't remember who it was that was posting here last season that was a part of the student section, but I love to hear his thoughts. I'd also like to see at least some student input into the way the student section is handled, planned, etc during games. Find out what will draw the students and implement as much as they (legally and ethically;)) can. A strong student following will make for a MUCH (!!!!) better home environment.

I was a member of the inagaural Hawk's Nest back during the 2000-2001 season. That year was Luke Recker and Reggie Evan's first season with the Hawks. We were all hyped up. I remember hearing a rumor that Recker had a lingering knee injury that might effect him playing. Well, he lead the team out at Midnight Madness and did a reverse, two handed dunk...question answered! It was amazing. I remember how jacked we were for the season to get here. That team, lead by Recker, Evans and a 4 yr starting PG by the name of Dean Oliver (whom I still think is one of the best PGs to ever don an Iowa uni), should have at minimum made the Final Four. Life happens and it didn't pan out. But what I remember most is Midnight Madness and how electrifying it was. They absolutely need to bring it back. The student section at Hawkeye games is lacklaster at best, unless you have the #1 team roll in like we had Michigan State do last season. I think it would do wonders for the Hawks.

Make it fun.

Make it the place to be.

Make it worth walking 6 blocks when it is 10 degrees below zero.

And that's why I'd want student input. I was never a 19 year old college student. At 19 I was sitting in the Fulda Gap waiting for the Soviets to ruin my day. The only thing that would make it worth walking 6 blocks at -10 was bier. Otherwise, I wanted warm and dry.

I was there as well, and as a sophomore that year we were sitting through two pretty awful football seasons in a row. Students couldn't wait for basketball to start, just for the hope of winning. I'm not sure the current students would come out for Midnight Madness like we did due to the fact that football seems to be on the rise right now and basketball is expected to have an average season. I did love Midnight Madness, however, and would love to see it brought back. It has to be well promoted with incentives to bring students out. Without a huge student turnout the arena would sit almost empty for something like that. It'd be tough to do, they could work out a deal where the football team was somehow involved I think you'd see a big turnout.

Maybe White Magic could take on the Sherminator in an exhibition match.

I agree that it would take quite an effort to get a meaninful showing of students to come out to Midnight Madness. It's sad because as a person who defines what being a fan(atic) of the Hawkeyes is, I would come out regardless of how good the team was suppose to be but in this "what have you done for me lately" world, if we aren't coming off of a major bowl or a deep run in some kind of basketball tourney, there isn't the buzz going into a season.

It would be nice to see the students come out and get behind the basketball team this year. Lot of new faces on the court and having the support of the fans/students right off the bat would do a lot for confidence. In my humble opinion. Looking forward to seeing what the new guys can do.

Until we have another Final Four appearance, I don't believe the Iowa student section can be resuscitated.

Ahhh the hawks nest. After 7 consecutive years as a undergrad and grad student, my final 8th year would have put me within the first 5 rows of the floor. Instead the Hawks nest superseded seniority and moved me back to around row 28. Don't have a lot of love for it. MIdnight madness only worked during that time because people had an interest in the team. Having an empty arena with a midnight madness event would make it worse.
