Minnesota hires PJ Fleck

Good hire by Minnesota. Also a guy that can probably convince a lot of kids to not transfer. He is a very good recruiter. Was hoping he would go someplace that wasn't competing against Iowa.

Yeah I'm not real excited about this hire, being an Iowa fan. He pretty much represents all of the positives from their last 5 coaching hires rolled up into one.

Since the term row the boat is off the table for Minnesota because Western Michigan actually has it copyrighted, what is the next Goofy, cheesy marketing slogan he comes up with?

I'm going with: "plow the snow"

Good hire, but I'm not overly worried. Many of these flash-in-the-pants MAC-level guys turn out to be mediocre at best. There's no telling if he will be able to put together a B1G-quality staff that is capable of replicating his results at Western Michigan.

Minnesota is a good landing spot for him. There's a reason why Oregon, Texas, LSU, Baylor, and even Purdue looked elsewhere. Fleck is pretty unproven. And his shtick will get old fast if his teams aren't performing on the field.

Actually he told Purdue he had not interest in them

I don't think it's accurate to say that they looked elsewhere. He publicly stated that he was not leaving his team prior to their last game. I thought that was a hell of a commitment on his part. Something you just don't see these days.

While I am not happy to see this guy in the Big Ten West it's hard not to respect the hell out of the guy even though he's very cheesy and quirky

I ... He publicly stated that he was not leaving his team prior to their last game....

After everything I've seen and read over the years, it's hard for me to put much weight on anything a coach says publicly during a coaching search. But maybe that's just me ...

I understand what you're saying but he obviously appears to have put his money where his mouth is. Hard not to respect that. That's not to say he wouldn't do something differently the next time but...

We're reading tea leaves here, but my take is that he kicked the Purdue can down the road because he thought he had a chance at the Oregon job (or others). And then Purdue didn't want to wait around.

Between Brohm and Fleck, the head coaching talent in the B1G West has gotten a major upgrade as of late. KF and Riley remain the only dinosaurs, with Lovie coming up quickly (although he's at least new to the college game). Don't think this necessarily represents an upcoming power shift, but I would say that it will be more and more challenging for KF to compete in the West.

Watched his presser today on BTN and man I was wore out after watching him. That guy is on speed ( kidding ) but when one gets tired of him it will go quickly in my opinion. His record is just better than average for all the hype he has received I thought it would be better than what it is at WMU being 13 - 0 etc.

I agree easy for him to say when maybe he wasnt getting interviews and offers that he thought had coming his way. Because with his logic not leaving team till last game all you'd ever have is programs like Minnesota with a late firing or a situation like Illinois last year. Majority of hires done prior to bowl season.

Was digging the clip I saw until he said "I eat tough conversations for breakfast"...he was over the top with the emotion. Question: why must Minnesota always hire a coach with some jacka$$ in him? Can see exactly what you're saying.

I have a feeling that if the Minnesota opening (or one better) didn't come that he would have stayed at WMU for another year and probably would have kicked ass again. Purdue's current situation is horrible whereas Minnesota actually has some talent on the roster, still. Plus, he's in a big market and, unlike Purdue which shares the state with Indiana and Notre Dame, he has Minnesota all to himself. It'll be tougher to pull kids out of Minnesota with him there and I think he may be able to steal talent in Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Nebraska. It would have been better for Iowa if Tracy Claeys was still the coach.

Three WM 3 stars have already flipped to MN. These guys could quickly take our spot as the second best program in the west.

You are wrong about Fleck being a flash of the pan guy. Fleck is a star and I actually think he will be the next Urban Meyer.

Because he flipped three 3* players from WMU? If Iowa and KF just flipped 3 MAC players half this board would be ripping on their recruiting for settle for MAC decommits.

Actually it's 6 players now and looking at offers list most have only 1 big offer from Minnesota. Though I guess one has a isu and Illinois offer.

Yeah, I thought the guy was a tool a couple years ago when he first started getting attention but I think he's the real deal now. He's kind of crazy, and so over the top positive but I don't think it's an act. We hired a guy that played under him his first year at WMU, when they went 1-11, and he loved him and he wasn't recruited by him and played for him during a very trying year and he said he was exactly the same way all the time, he's not just doing it for the cameras. I think he's going to be a really good hire for MN.
