Prime time basketball. Big event with Tennessee and UCONN. Iowa's chance to show the nation they're a big time program even without Clark. WUFF!!

Not a big deal to lose, but Iowa just looked lost. It was embarrassing to watch them try and handle the basketball. Explain Iowa offense tonight? It wasn't even the full court pressure but the lazy passes in the half court that baffled me.

And where were the freshman in the second half? Could Jan have gone small on spurts to help handle the ball and get something going on offense? Seemed like she didn't make many adjustments.

This was exactly what I expected to see. I'm happy they hung with them as long as they did. This game will be a giant teaching tool that will pay dividends when it matters in March.

I wasn't. They were better athletes but not great basketball players. Credit to them for knowing what they are good at and take advantage. We'll get better.

Tennessee defined the terms and style of play tonight. Is that coaching? Would Bluder had done things differently? Just curious, not trying to overreact.

I think Jan has a dilemma with Syd, Do you keep giving her major minutes and hope she gets her Mojo back or do you let Stremlow and Mallegni get experience/minutes. While she did get 8 rebounds Syd had 2 pts, 2 assists and 7 turnovers in 35 minutes.
Pretty disappointed in her play tonight. I thought she would step up and lead at some point.

I love Affolter. Litetally one of my favorite Hawks the last few years. She has had a very tough start to the year. I think she will get there.

30 FRICKIN TURNOVERS WILL MAKE YOU SICK!!!!!!!! I HAVE SEEN BETTER HIGH SCHOOL PLAY THAN THE WOMEN EXHIBITED TONIGHT. JAN CAN'T COACH! I WOULD HAVE MADE AN ULTIMATUM AFTER THE FIRST QUARTER: YOU GET A TURNOVER - YOU SIT!!!

CHEW THEM OUT - ENOUGH LOVEY DOVEY !

Would have been an interesting lineup on the floor with your “you turn the ball over and you sit” ultimatum since Ava Heiden was the only player without a turnover.

I agree. Sometimes she is too positive withthem when what they need is an ass chewing.

Y need ids anold gashionef ass chewing!

Tennessee is a good, athletic team. Iowa is lacking in athleticism, so they rely on the extra pass for shots---and that works with less athletic teams, but it caught up with them at the end.

It very nearly started to break Iowa's way. Olsen put up a 3pt shot that rimmed out around the 2:30 mark. That miss and the turnover that followed was the end.

Here come the overreactions. The sky is falling. We knew they were going to press and no, we did not handle it well. We don’t have the best player in college basketball anymore. The game is definitely going to be harder. It’s still early in the season. Jan is learning as well. Affolter needs to start playing better quickly. Your 2 guard can’t turn the ball over 7 times. And yes I know she’s coming back from injury and she’ll find her groove.

I think you're in under reacting

I was watching on recording and skipped ahead at halftime because the first half was so awful. I can't even believe they were tied. It looked like a middle school game at times with the lack of ball handling and terrible passes. They should be very embarrassed. The people who are supposed to be experienced looked the opposite and other than Lucy the people who should be handling the ball looked like they were playing hot potato with it. Affolter was awful, Feuerback was awful in the first and not much better in the second. Stuelke had butter fingers and missed some point blank shots, McCabe frankly looked out classed and O'Grady had some terrible passes. I'm not going to subject myself to watching the second half but based on the score I am guessing it was rinse and repeat.

No kidding this ain’t 15 years with fran. Jan does have a little on the job learning to do. There is a big difference subbing and making decisions when the buck stops with you.
The team needed an experience like this. They played that poorly and still could have/should have won.

30 turnovers, for f-n real? How is that even possible? I saw the last two games were almost 20 each, but 30 turnovers in a single game doesn't seem possible. They also went 3-14 from 3? I'm amazed they only lost by 10.

I guess we’ll see. We lost 1 game. To a ranked team that’s pretty darn athletic. Of course we need to play better but did you think we were going undefeated?
I don't care that they lost. No, I didn't think they'd go undefeated. I just think they got embarrassed at major prime time event trying to dribble and pass a basketball.

Certainly there were some basketball fans out there that tuned to watch the double header and probably said "hey, I recognize that logo! CC played there." This Iowa team has been pretty good for a while. Let's check out this new team! My mind goes to all the people that said Iowa was only good because of CC.

Just disappointed that Jan didn't seem to have an answer for the pressure. Didn't seem to have them ready. Didn't seem to make adjustments.

I never thought they'd go undefeated and I figured they'd probably lost 8 games this year and hopefully land as a 5-6-7 seed.

The somen bettter find thieir 3 pt zhot,They were afraid tto put it up
I keep pointing this out. You don't just FIND your shot. This team does not have really good three point shooters. It just doesn't. We not only lost CC22 but Kate money Martin, March Gabbie, and even Molly. Tell me who on this team is a really good 3 point shooter? McCabe by the numbers, sure. BUT she can't get her own shot and if teams crowd her she can't or won't shoot. Kylie is not a good three point shooter. She'll make a couple and then the next few aren't even close. Syd made some last year, as basically a 4th option and she's struggling to find her game. Hannah is not a consistent jump shooter. I think Mallengi COULD fill that Warnock role, but she's not ready right now.Its just not a big part of Lucy's game. The only pleasant surprise so far has been Guyton, but her playing usually takes Lucy off the floor. Maybe Jan can start experimenting with playing Guyton some at that 2 spot.

Totally agree. I also feel like Guyton and Lucy need to play together.

They played hard and fought, and yes this was a good learning tool. I'd get used to that 3-14 from 3 thing though. We'll have some decent games, but not consistently unless Mallegni gets comfortable, and Guyton see's more minutes next too Lucy.

This game pointed the spotlight on the skill sets that need to be recruited. This team is really lacking the ball skills and athletic ability to deal with pressure. Addie Deal is a great start. Hayes is not going to be part of that solution as a post. Houston shows some ability to ball handle in the highlights I found, her shot is almost a set shot though with little extension which will make it harder for her to score while contested.

Well we were really good because of CC. That’s an actual fact. And if you thought this was going to be an 8 loss team looking at the schedule this might certainly be one of them. We’ve struggled to handle pressure because for 4 years nobody else had to dribble the basketball. It’s not as easy as CC made it look. We’ll get better.

From what I have noticed this season, the team sets up it's half court offense and starts it on the right hand side of the court. Often times Taylor ends up open on the left side and is momentarily open but her teammates don't recognize it. By the time they reverse the ball , Taylor is covered and has no shot.

It is hard for the girls to drive the lane when you have Hannah, Addie and their two defenders in the lane usually.

I think the coaching staff need to set screens for our 3 point shooters so they can get open looks. Get Hannah out setting screens for Taylor and others and it will also reduce the traffic in the lane for Lucy and and Sid and Kylie.

Our bigs are playing very soft. Hannah can't make shots and Addie has trouble holding on to rebounds.

I like the girls on the team but they are missing Caitlin's business attitude. The girls need to crank up the intensity.

Constant positive reinforcement by Jan is not always a winning strategy.

The turnovers has got to stop or it will be a 500% Big 10 season. I hope I'm wrong.

30 turnovers and 42 points scored on Iowa's turnovers according to game stats.

Our 3pt shooting hasn't overall been terrible but not what it needs to be. I cannot understand how other teams, ISU and Drake for example consistently get open threes, yet Iowa shooters always seem rarely to get open shots. I posted a few days ago and agree with the poster above, set some screens for McCabe and others and maybe it will improve.

I'm not sure what's changed except teams focusing on CC leading to a lot of open shots. Teams don't really have to cheat off their person now. Possibly Jensen, know as the post guru, is focused too much on the post game. They definitely have turned it over a lot this year forcing post passes that were not wise. Teams are happy let AOG and Stuelke try and score a 2 vs leaving other people open. Stuelke has not been especially efficient finishing around the rim.

the turnovers are correctable .
We all need to remember this is an extremely young team with a very new concept without CC.
I for one expected a few ups and downs this year. Trust the process . Freshmen will improve, they’ll cut down the turnovers. In short they’re gonna be fine.
Side note: Tennessee a much more veteran team. Not surprised by last nights outcome

"As long as they did." I think Iowa had a 4-point lead late in the fourth. They finally fell apart again, like at the beginning, with about 3 minutes to play. And that was despite an ungodly number of TOs. Iowa was brilliant on the glass, but they let the frenzy of Tennessee rush them far too often.

Tennessee plays defense like Michigan State's men, the difference being Tennessee has very little talent. Sure, they eventually made some threes, but what was the percentage? They want to shoot 50 and hope a few drop. Most of their points came from lay-ups. The jump shots were mostly throws. No touch on the ball at all. I'm not quite sure what I was watching Saturday night. It reminded me of basketball a few times, but mostly it looked like a division 3 rugby match.

RELAX!

The last 2 seasons, the Hawks have lost to Kansas State early in the year, and things turned out ok. Tennessee plays gimmick style that can work early in the season and worked well back in the 1990's, but gets picked apart as teams have more time to work on it. There is a reason that the best teams don't play that style.

Things that will need to do over the next handful of weeks:
1. Taylor McCabe getting more minutes. Hawks need a 3pt shooter on the court to balance the court. The more she plays the better her shot gets and it opens up more lanes for Lucy to drive and more space for the posts to work.

2. Syd Affolter needs to just keep playing and stay confident. I don't think people understand how much missing the fall practices affects a player like Syd. Yes, she is back playing, but all the off-season work she would have put in on her shot was lost when she had her knee scoped. Hopefully by mid January she will be all the way back. In the meantime, she is playing great defense and rebounding.

3. Keep getting the freshman minutes. at least 8-12 minutes per game for Guyton, Stremlow, Ava and Teagan.

McCabe is easily the best 3 point shooter on the team, but what good is that when she's essentially a statue out there. Personally, I feel Jan needs to devise some plays specifically for Taylor in an effort to get her some shots. If that's not an option then she's less valuable than Gabby was last year.

The stat line for this game was deceiving. Iowa out rebounded the more athletic Vols by a whopping 15. However, the Vols attempted 27 more shots than Iowa. Bottom line is you're never going to win by attempting 27 fewer shots than your opponent compounded with an incredible 30 turnovers.

I agree that they need to design plays for McCabe, but even if they don't, having her on the floor makes the defense keep 1 defender on her. McCabes defender can't help on Lucy's drives and they can't double the posts because they have to stay on McCabe.

She's also not a very good defender, certainly not as good as Kylie, so there's that end to consider as well..

Hopefully it'll be a good learning lesson for the girls. I think Jan can, and will, use this as a teaching moment. We're young so it very well may be a wake the hell up type of moment.

Jan will get it sorted out.
