Missed a huge opportunity

You’ve got to be able to get your own shot at this level. McCabe can’t do that. Yes she can shoot but when everyone knows all you can do is shoot but not drive it makes it easier to cover her. And her defense still needs to be better.

Melissa Dixon couldn't drive or get her own shot, so there surely must be some way that others like her are open multiple times.

Well one team turned the ball over 30 times which leads to lots of transition open 3’s. The other team struggled to get the ball in bounds.

30 turnovers and 42 points scored on Iowa's turnovers according to game stats.

Our 3pt shooting hasn't overall been terrible but not what it needs to be. I cannot understand how other teams, ISU and Drake for example consistently get open threes, yet Iowa shooters always seem rarely to get open shots. I posted a few days ago and agree with the poster above, set some screens for McCabe and others and maybe it will improve.
McCabe came in and shit her pants on one of the main sets they run just for her. With a screen.
The next time they see this pressure they will be better. If Iowa and Tennessee play at the end of the season we will not have near that many turnovers.

Pretty much this. Concurred.

Should've lost far, far, far worse than we did with 30 TO's.

We're a good team. Got a lot of kinks to fix adapting to life without CC though. Like you said earlier.

Side note: I really like Guyton. I think she'll be really good going forward. She just plays too fast with the ball right now but I've a feeling she's going to be a reliable or steady ball handler in the future. Kind of a good vibe or swagger about her game. Very confident too.

Hopefully it'll be a good learning lesson for the girls. I think Jan can, and will, use this as a teaching moment. We're young so it very well may be a wake the hell up type of moment.

Jan will get it sorted out.
I hope so, but I may not be as optimistic as you considering our youth. I mean we had 42 turnovers in the two games in Cancun and then had a week off to get ready for Tenn. and we had 30 TO's in that game! I would think we already had our "wake up call". A little concerning.

I think there's still too much shinny-object syndrome (fear of missing out part) going on here with expectations when you have to compensate for major veteran experience losses (iirc, 3 who played together 4 years while Kate/Gabby played 5 yrs) the best you can see with the talent remaining and incoming.

You have to build trust between all the new people in new positions in a new system. There's a lot of "new" moving parts going on here vs the well-oiled machine of Bluder/CC/veterans of the last two years. This does NOT magically happen by snapping your fingers or saying "who's got next" or "we got next."

TN is very fast and more athletic than us. They put those attributes in the best position to frustrate and disrupt our inexperience and it showed up in a big way.

Of course, I did not expect this many problems with Lucy back at the helm. And yet, still feel great about this team. I'm actually more high on them now then before the game on how they still battled hard with the onslaught of fiery knives. When you have this many problems and you remain this close to a W, then to me that has a very positive backdrop to build on.

Listened to those who have played the game to glean more insight regarding the outcome and analysis of what is needed going forward.
@49:34 - 54:03 In this exchange, Ka$hine Alexander says 10-14 TOs is max for Iowa team. Explains how this game could be a positive.

@38:27 - 41:43 In this exchange, Ka$h explains how this is positive. Explains trust as an issue, mental aspect of the pressure and practice to overcome.

@2:51 - 3:24 In this Q&A, Lucy is asked a question about the differences between her old team and Iowa. Again, she validates the mental side of preparation.

@10:35 - 11:36 In this Q&A, Jan is asked a question about fatigue a factor in the last two mins. Again, she validates the mental weight of the circumstances.

Samford had 37 TOs against TN and lost by 40+.
We had 23 TOs against BYU and won by 20+.
We had 18 TOs in the 1st half of this game and we're STILL tied.
We had 26 TOs with 3:45 mins to go and we're STILL UP 3 pts.
We had 30 TOs and gifted them 42 points. We had a lot of bad ill-advised lobs. We went 3 for 14 for 3. We only lost by 10. It's hard to fathom it's even possible to do this.

Meaning alarm bells should also be going off in your head that some things are obviously working with these numbers. Maybe Jan is more focusing on establishing a new foundation to grow from first (defense) and then smoothing over the rough spots that fall out as they show their hand.

Here's what gets lost in the translation.

There's a big pile of dung Jan can pitch a shovel to and start tossing it out. That's the exciting upside we have in our corner yet. It's NOT like it's a razor thin problem that you question, where are we going to clawback some of these losses were experiencing?

We really only have 4 people with meaningful big time experience and those 4 people are still experiencing their own growth in their own right. 1) Lucy is in her 1st year at a new system. 2) Hannah is going through growth pains at a new postion. 3) Syd still finding her groove with lost time in practice 4) Jan is in her 1st year as a head coach implementing her own sys based on the people and the talents they have available.

When you have your most experienced personnel still learning like newbies and frosh yet compared to having Bluder, Clark and 3 more veterans who played 4 years together, it's going to look like chaos for some time. Their recognition, timing and ball handling skills are lacking yet because of this inexperience. If you recall, we had one generational talent do all those things for us for 4 years. Since CC basically handled all of thngs single-handedly, you can see she covered up a multiude of sins for us now. Meaning there will be growing pains that come with the transition. It takes time to gel and hit on all cylinders. Yet we still lost by ONLY 10 points amongst all this rubble inexperience creates for itself. To me, that's highly encouraging.

If we go by what Ka$h, Lucy and Jan say about the mental part of the game also being part of the problem, then that also seems solvable with time.

Syd is a wildcard yet. At this point, we have no idea what's going on here. She did make progress in both of her prior 2 games. The TN game was highly unexpected of her. We have no idea what the coaches are seeing in practice vs Syd in a game to understand what the fix is here and why I call it a wildcard. However with what we got from her last year, believe it's just a matter of time again when she gets her groove back. Hopefully it's sooner rather than later.

Lucy is just coming off an injury and Guyton has only practiced with the team like 2 weeks now. With these 2 alone, getting more time to gel together and Guyton more time to gel with the whole team will fix a lot of these ball handling problems. I can even see a solution that entails Lucy and Guyton playing together when the situation calls for it like the TN game. This ball handling can be fixed. Why do I say this? Because Guyton can solve another one of our current thorn in our side and that's improving on made 3s. Still think Teagan needs more experience so she can get acclimated to the speed of college ball and be another answer for the 3 dept.

If these 4 (Lucy, Syd, Guyton and Teagan) make it to our promise land together, believe we will come out of this wilderness just fine. The game will eventually slow down with more playing and gelling time together to build that chemistry.

I'm expecting time and experience will cure those items we currently lack. Since those items that look like a mess now can be fixed coupled with the foundational line items that are currently working, it should make us more than a NCAA tournament team that just makes it in. Hosting should be the goal for this team to give us a favorable chance to drive deeper into their final run. I realize it won't be easy, but still see lots of upside talent to tap into for this team.

The next 3 games we'll see how the coaches and players respond to their first adversity and how hungry they are to making headway on these deficiencies.

The lob pass was tough to watch. Just seemed to high and slow getting in and allowing Tenn athletic players time to react to it.
Hoping Iowa figures out different plays to get it into the post. Bounce passes maybe.

It's a high risk pass. I hope Jan dumps it.

I remember Iowa having trouble with those during the Gustafson years.

One thing they need to realize/work on going forward: athletic teams/players LOVE to show off their superior physical skills. It's an inherent Neanderthal urge that's virtually impossible to suppress: they're DYING to block your shot, intercept that pass or pick your pocket. You can counter this by using more shot fakes, pass fakes and backdoor cuts...plus pass recipients need to be much better at meeting the ball.

I remember that also. Seemed though they were telegraphing the pass before they would lob it and then Tenn had time to react to it and intercept it or knock it away. You just knew it was going to be a turnover.

Abby Stamp eluded to this on the post game radio show, She said they were guilty of continuing to try to do something that wasn’t working and they did a poor job as a staff of making adjustments. Hopefully good learning tool for the staff.

I agree, but they need to do SOME shot and pass fakes, because as of now I don't remember any. Maybe bring back Ally Disterhoft to show them how to do that, especially on layups.
