On the 3rd and goal at the 4 where we ran a sweep right and lost yards and settled for the FG.

Fant split out to the left and a small corner ran out on him. There was no other player within 15 yards.

That should have been an automatic inside slant for a TD. Fant had a 5-6 inch height advantage, out weighed him by 50+ pounds and Fant is probably just as athletic.

I've seen Aaron Rodger see that coverage just start laughing at the line of scrimage do a quick snap before the defense adjusts then throw the inside slant for an easy touchdown.

Note to Brian, tell Fant and Stanley that when ever that happens, it is an automatic slant no matter what other play is called.

They gave us a gift we refused to accept.

The first drive where they turned it over on downs, Fant was in one on one as well. They ran a sneak instead. Just a bunch of mistakes and missed opportunities. Iowa to me looked like the better team overall but made too many mistakes. You can't have two punts by Wisconsin turned over. That is just horrible. One resulted in a TD and one could have resulted in points for Iowa with the field position they would have had.

We used Scott Chandler like that in the red zone and it worked. Why doesn’t Iowa do that w/fant. Those corners were both around 6ft. Fant is an athlete who could put jump the kid for a jump ball. At worst you get a DPI and it’s first n goal.

BF is way too conservative at times and then he tries to get “cute” with his play calling. 2nd 2 w/clock runnning late and we call a toss sweep???

OP, you are absolutely right. I said the same thing. In fact, before Iowa broke the huddle, I said they should go with the "7 got 6" MSU slant to Fant. And then when Wisky showed that defensive formation... WOW.... What a missed opportunity.

So when KF went off on Beyer in the postgame, he should have been even more upset with his OC. After all, Brian gets paid more than Beyer does, and Brian blew it on the goal line TWICE, which were much bigger failures than Beyer's brain freeze.

I think Iowa thought that Wisconsin would be expecting them to go to Fant so they tried something else.

Perhaps, but did the Bulls throw the ball to someone else at crunch time because the opponent knew the Bulls wanted to get the ball to Michael Jordan? Or did the Cavs pass on LeBron? Or did Wisconsin try something else because Iowa knew they wanted to run Taylor?

You should go to your best weapon and challenge the other team to stop him. And he's your best weapon because other teams usually can't stop him. It was a foolish call, as the later successful plays to a wide open Fant prove.

Yes. Maybe you didn't watch the Bulls win championships but there a few famous moments in Bulls championships that were passes to guys for clutch shots (Paxon and Kerr). Same with Lebron passing to people.
Yes they did try other things.

Just because a play doesn't work doesn't mean it was a foolish call.
Sometimes it is because guys miss blocks, see the IKM play. the wisconsin LB gets blocked and it is probably a TD

On that play - it looked like the intention was to use Fant more as a decoy.

Prior to the game, the majority of our TDs had been rushing TDs. Ultimately, we need to be able to block on those plays and see success. I frankly thought that that play-call was fine ... my issue was more on the execution of our blocking on the play. Of course, part of it was that Connelly made one hell of a play too.

It has to be the slant to Fant. Either he catches it for a guaranteed 1st down and likely just falls forward for a TD or the DB has to interfere. Either way, we win the game.

What If. What If. What if.

Hawks lose another one we should not have.

you have just been annointed BF s replacement at play caller . lol

Terrible play calls inside the 20. Same thing that almost lost the ISU game. Take shots at the endzone. Play to win.

I saw the mismatch at the game and was going nuts texting my family

I said exact same thing. Any time Fant is one on one with a short DB the ball should be getting pump for jump ball. Not sure if that is Stanleys option to go there if he sees one on one or BF tells him to stick to play as called.

Or just jump ball it. Supposedly has a great vertical and he is tall.

Pretty big "if" when Wisconsin has been snuffing the sweep plays. He missed that block because the LB made an excellent play, which is really no big surprise. Meanwhile your star TE is one on one with one defender.

No plays are guarantees.

Not sure who followed Fant out the first time but the second time it was D Dixon, the Badgers top DB. While Fant probably still has the edge in that match-up it probably isn't as automatic as if one of their young CBs or an LB covered him. Maybe that scrubbed any fade/slant into a run play.

Pass to Fant in that scenario, no matter who is in coverage, is probably 5 times more like to be TD then the play we ran.

Like I said earlier, I've seen Aaron Rodger get that match up a number of times and start laughing, shaking his head then throw the TD.

Should be about as close to a sure thing as anything out there
