MLB Attendance down 7% from a year ago

Don’t blame me.

But if there's 4 of you, that's 100 bucks. And all of you aren't going to sit there and not eat or drink anything for 3 hours, especially the kids.

But the bill for an NFL, NHL, NBA and a home Hawkeye game for the same group would be considerably higher sometimes by multiples. It’s all relative I guess but in no way is it affordable. That’s why it’s turning into a special occasion instead of a spur of the moment entertainment decision.

I don't watch a ton of baseball on tv (except for playoff time) but it is a great sport to watch live. Nothing beats a summer day at the ballpark with a beer and a brat. I even love going to minor league games. In some ways, they are even more fun.

Do rainouts factor in that number? There have been a record number of those this season.

Went to my first game of the year last week at Target Field. Basically paid $15 to go drink $11 beers. Watched about 6 pitches of the game. I don’t go to watch the game anymore. It’s more of the atmosphere and social time for me. Target Field has done a great job with their bars. The Bat and Barrel area is pretty cool and open to normies.

It's boring.
Attendance down from last year. It didn't get boring from last year till this. If you liked going to games last year, chances are you're going now. MLB open March 29th this year and April was the coldest ever in the upper midwest.

If you thought it was unusually cold last month, you were right: April 2018 was the USA's coldest April in 21 years, a new report says.

And for two states in the Upper Midwest — Iowa and Wisconsin — it was the coldest April since records began in 1895.

"Both states shattered their previous records from 1907 by about 1.5 degrees, an impressive crushing" of the former record, according to Weather Channel meteorologist Jonathan Erdman.

Record-breaking snow also accompanied the cold in many areas, wreaking havoc with baseball schedules and seriously delaying the onset of spring.

During April, the average U.S. temperature was 48.9 degrees, which was 2.2 degrees below average, "making it the 13th-coldest April on record and the coldest since 1997," the report said.

The climate report was released Tuesday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

I would say weather probably accounted for half of the decrease. Twins missed a lot of games early on for example. The other half of the decrease would be on previously discussed reasons of cost and access. I still think baseball is losing out on younger fans and newer potential fans with the pace of play discussion. It doesn't bother me but I've been a baseball fan my entire life.

In the American League there is only about 5 teams that are worth a crap. The rest of the teams should just pack it in. They need to level the playing field. It’s a joke

Minor league baseball is great. Parking is free, tickets are a fraction of the price, some nights have great food deals. And this year alone I've seen former All Stars Salvador Perez, Alex Gordon, Clay Bucholz, Tim Lincecum, Edward Mojica and Allen Craig.

Professional sports in general are so damned expensive anymore, the market is reacting accordingly. I love baseball and the Cubs, but I've cut down from 4-5 games at Wrigley a year to 1-2 a year. The experience is getting less and less worth the cost of tickets plus a ridiculous $11 a beer. All the bars around Wrigley are pricey too and getting there is always a challenge.

Other sports should pay attention too. The Hawkeyes had two huge Big Ten matchups last season that should have been packed, but since they priced it at $95 a pop, neither one was sold out. They haven't seemed to learn or just don't care as there are two $95 games this year too.

The obvious answer is that its population is aging, and the new kids have been raised on Fortnite, smartphone gratification, superhero movies, hip hop and basketball, and social media. It’s hard for me to imagine a 15 year old sitting through 3 hours of a slower-paced game and not getting antsy. Not to mention MLB doesn’t have the superstar culture like other sports. Very few outsize personalities.

the pitch clock was the best thing to happen to baseball since going all in on the DH

I went to the Rockies game Saturday night. First time in 2 years as I am trying to boycott them cause their ownership is dreadful. Hoping their attendance drops so they finally make changes. Place was freaking packed. And the game cruised right by with the pitch clock. Before we knew it, it was the 5th inning and I was telling the kids they better go get their hot dog before the game is over. Mentioned to my friends that I almost wish they didn't have the pitch clock as the game was going so fast.

I hate to admit you are right because I hated the pitch clock idea before it started. I switched to DirectTV stream from YTTV a couple weeks ago so I can watch the Royals. I hadn't watched much before this in a couple years.

Damn was I wrong. The pitch clock has helped the fluidity of the game by leaps and bounds.

Now the ghost runner in extra innings however is still stupid AF.

Could it be an age thing?

It seems like the average baseball fan these days is an 80 year old white millionaire mutual fund manager.
