Molinaro is headed to Rio

Hopefully he has taken care of his bad case of yeast infection. Still think he is a D-bag but he is our D-bag. Go USA wrestling!

You need a PhD in Physics to understand the chain of events that led to the USA receiving a qualifying spot. But who's complaining? Here's the, um, "explanation":

The controversy began when Ukraine was present at the second last chance qualifier in Turkey at 65kg. Andriy Kvyatkovskyy (UKR) was originally the runner-up at the European Olympic Games qualifier in Serbia. However, Semen Radulov was present at the 65kg bracket in Istanbul last weekend, setting off a series of questions as to why he was there and what would happen to the Olympic qualifying license.

This morning’s press release clarified the issue. Both 65kg finalists from the Euro qualifier in Zrenjanin had their licenses revoked; this also included Magomedmurad Gadzhiev of Poland. As such, those licenses went to the bronze medalists from that weekend in Zurabi Iakobishvili (GEO) and David Safaryan (ARM). This is where it started to get convoluted for American fans.

It was not known at the time of either the Mongolia qualifier or the Turkey qualifier that Poland had failed a drug test. Speculation went around as to whether all results would be shifted, since Iakobishvili then qualified in Mongolia, a tournament he would not have had to go to if the anti-doping results were known.

Iakobishvili made the finals in Ulaanbaatar to qualify. Since he would not have had to go, his license was shifted to bronze medalist and former Cal Poly All American Boris Novachkov (BUL). As the new qualifier from Mongolia, Novachkov’s results were shifted down from the Turkey qualifier. Molinaro lost to Novachkov in the quarterfinals, but after Boris made the finals, Frank was able to wrestle back for bronze. UWW ultimately awarded the final qualifying spot to America.

As much as I dislike Frank, I am happy to see Team USA qualify the spot, and I will be cheering for him in Rio.

He's wrestled tougher these past few months than I've ever seen him in the past. Hopefully that trend continues

This is awesome. It's all about who can get hot at the right time. Look at Chamizo last year and Jamil Kelly awhile back. Coleman Scott went from 3rd on the depth chart to 3rd in the Olympics. Even though he has a stupid haircut I'll be rooting for him!

I think the stupid haircut thing is getting old. Would you old crusty guys care to post your awesome picture of your parted to the right or left haircut from the 80's or the bowl cut or no damn hair at all. My son and half of his friends (who are not thugs, punks, Jersey shore freaks, etc.) have their hair cut in a similar way. It's a style of today, just like long hair was cool in the 70's. We praise and love a mullet but freak out on another haircut. Not everyone thinks, acts, dresses the same. Thank God, cause flannel shirts and Levi's don't necessarily look that great on me. I'm sure most of you probably rock it pretty well.

Good news for Team USA. I didn't see this coming this early although I did kind of figure Molinaro would eventually get in on the bribe system a week or two before Rio.

I still can't believe Metcalf or Pico isn't our guy at this weight.

^^^ I think kids with the same haircut look just as stupid. Doesn't make them bad kids in the least bit. I had a dorky haircut for a short time back in the 80's when I was immature as well, but I was like 16 at the time. For a grown man to sport that hairstyle looks stupid in my opinion. I am as entitled to think that way just as he is to choosing how to cut his hair. Doesn't mean that I won't be pulling for him to do well in Rio, just means I think his hair style makes him look like a 15 year old kid trying too hard to be cool... like I once was.

I'm sure you're kids are good people, they still have a turd haircut.

Glad we filled the spot, but as I stated in another thread, I don't believe he has a shot at a medal. He struggled to finish 3rd at a tournament where all the actual contenders at this weight were absent from since they already qualified, and in the first qualifier he performed even worse, (did he even win a match?).

Don't think Streebler or Pico would have even done as well as Frank did in the 2nd qualifier. Not a strong weight for us this year. We literally have no one that is a threat at 65K. Metcalf did a good job of carrying the torch, but his prime time fell outside of Olympic years or was perhaps in 2012. The good news is that this weight seems loaded 4 years from now. I might be wrong but Streebler and Pico (if he sticks around) only get better and Zain will be tough to beat. Throw in some new faces that might be forced to move up or down because of the limited weight classes and I think we are much stronger in 2020.

I think the outrage for Frank's haircut stems from the fact that he can have a ponytail in front due to the length of his bangs, as opposed to the back of his head.

Brent is all class. Anyone know what he's thinking regarding his future now that we are six weeks removed from the Trials?

Frank has really represented well over the past few months both nationally and abroad. He has beaten several very good wrestlers and proven he can compete at the Olympic level. I'm sure we will all be rooting for him.

Most can't stand him because of his actions.

Compare the mullet to the Butch Lesbian cut? For shame.

Shouldn't have to spend time in a match clearing your bangs from your eyes.
BTW, Frank is a punk from Jersey...what's your boy's excuse? ;)

I'm a bald 30 year old dude. I have the right to call anyone's haircut stupid if I want. I couldn't have a stupid haircut if I wanted. Ignore anyone that says Frank has a crap haircut then. I'm all in for Frank and I hope he can get a medal. After he gets one i would tell him great job and to get a different haircut. I'd tell you go USA and to lighten up.

butch you have been around long enough to know how things go around here. we get a stupid joke and run it in the ground, but anyway frank did a great job coming back for 3rd to put hisself in position to receive this wild card. I thought logan streebader would get it for sure.

Incredibly classy by Metcalf. What a great human being he is!!
Funny how things work out sometimes. Brent suffered a devastating loss to Molinaro but handled it with an almost stunning degree of grace and class. Took time out to call Dan Dennis shortly after his horrific Saturday at the Trials, putting his teammate first and wishing him well. Has demonstrated nothing but grace and dignity since that awful weekend in his wrestling career. Now, Frank gets the nod and goes to Rio, and Brent steps up again with a classy tweet.

Interesting -- although we're all totally bummed that Brent didn't get to realize his dream of going for gold in Rio, I'd argue that his stature as a wrestler and as a man has grown considerably since the trials. He's shown his true colors at a difficult time, which typically happens. Rather than pouting, etc., and showing true colors in a negative manner, however, he's taken the high road the whole way. I think the wrestling community (and probably quite a few other people who aren't necessarily wrestling fans) probably has even more respect for Brent since the disappointment of the Trials than before that weekend.

There's a good lesson to be learned here. First, as much as we love the sport, there's a whole lot more to life than wrestling. But looking at the bigger picture, life generally comes down to how we treat others. By putting others first, wishing Frank well, and showing grace and dignity in the face of massive disappointment, Brent has shown us the way. What a fantastic ambassador for our sport and for our state.

Makes you want to see him take another run at Worlds and get that dang yellow medal, doesn't it? Also makes me want to see him on our coaching staff at some point, yellow medal or not.

If I could give your post a dozen likes I would have done so, as I've been thinking about many of the things you wrote about Brent.

I think the arrow on Brent as a coaching commodity and a molder of men is going strongly up, and at some point in the not too distant future I think he will take an offer he can't refuse to coach somewhere. He's almost 30 and in his prime for such a position. He may be the hottest commodity out there right now. I think he wrestles this year and takes a coaching job next spring. Just my hunch.

I hope Frank wins Olympic Gold and gives a good 5-on-2 salute of honor to the entire world.

Thanks for posting that interview, Sett. That was awesome and he seems like a good kid. Interesting to hear him say he took a few years off, kind of like Dennis.

Hopefully Frank gets a gofundme account set up, so us Hawk fans can help him out.

Compare the mullet to the Butch Lesbian cut? For shame.

Shouldn't have to spend time in a match clearing your bangs from your eyes.
BTW, Frank is a punk from Jersey...what's your boy's excuse? ;)

AZChief - You are correct, I can't believe I compared that cut to the awesome mullet. That was absolutely and oversight of mine. I'm usually the piece keeper, don't not what got into me. Guess I did learn that my kid is a turd though so that's good.

Whew...I was worried there for a minute. As for your boy, not to worry bro...he too can grow a mullet to keep fluffed and feathered as a sign of his burgeoning manhood ;) (emoticon inserted to let other posters no I mean absolutely nothing personal)

Just so we're crystal clear, if you're going to make a comment about people making generalizations, probably shouldn't make generalizations about the people you are commenting to. Frank is a punk, but now he's our punk. We also gave Bo Nickal crap, and Alex Thomsen as well. It's all in good fun.
