A week after being formally announced as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024, Chicago Bears great Steve McMichael has been admitted to the intensive care unit of a suburban hospital with a urinary tract infection, according to his longtime publicist, Betsy Shepherd.

McMichael, 66, has been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for more than three years and has lost his ability to move or speak.

He was hospitalized last summer with sepsis and pneumonia before recovering. His fight, family and friends have said, was enlivened by the prospect of making the Hall of Fame.

That dream became a reality when it was announced at last week’s NFL Honors event that the Hall of Fame’s selection committee had approved McMichael for induction after the Hall’s seniors committee had recommended him in August.

New research links playing professional football with ALS

A new study published in JAMA Network Open might help us better understand the cause of at least some cases of ALS. It strongly suggests that playing professional football may be a risk factor for the disease.

  • Between 1960 and 2019, 19,423 men played in the National Football League (NFL). During that time period, 38 were diagnosed with ALS and 28 died of the disease.
  • Among these current and former football players, the risk of developing ALS and dying of the disease was nearly four times higher than that of men in the general population.

My late husband would have been 75 this month but was still a bright and together man both physically (so we thought) and mentally when he suddenly died at 56.
He’d had a few concussions that were diagnosed but likely more that were not. Seeing old teammates who are still alive begin to develop some serious health challenges both physical and mental makes me wonder if he would have been in a similar situation if he were still alive.
I do believe that had he been given a choice of being here one moment and gone the next at 56 versus being in a wheelchair and wearing a Depends he’d still go early.
Old age ain’t for sissies.

Chicago Bears great Steve McMichael has MRSA — a type of staph infection that resists most antibiotics — and is undergoing a blood transfusion at a suburban hospital, his family said Saturday in a statement.

The latest news on McMichael’s condition comes after he was admitted to the intensive care unit Thursday night with a urinary tract infection. The family expressed hope in a statement Friday that McMichael was expected to be released from the hospital in the days ahead, but after the latest development, they again asked for the public’s prayers “to get Steve through this difficult time.”

McMichael, 66, also underwent a procedure to remove fluid from his lungs during his current hospitalization, the family said Friday.

McMichael, who was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame last week, has been in a yearslong battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He has lost the ability to talk or move, and his body has been ravaged by the progressive nervous system disease.
