More Joe T down the stretch

Just posted this in the lounge but seems more relevant here, appreciate other’s thoughts:
I don’t know anymore. I thought JoeT would be at some point, a lot like Xavier Simpson former Point guard at Michigan. Good distributor, good passer and development of a floater or stop jump shot, with the occasional 3 point shot to keep opponents honest. I’m not sure anymore this is who he will develop into. Now whether or not it’s coaching or something else he’s not yet developed into that player. I’d ride him this year as much as possible to see if he’s capable but it always appears he has such a short leash we’ll never know. I’d love to hear the frank discussion’s between him and coach Fran. To me there’s some kind of disconnect

We all know that Joe gets after it defensively. That's good stuff right there. He must play at the end of games, and to be on the bench is inexcusable. We've all seen players play until they foul out. How can you bench a starter with his defensive skills when he has fouls remaining?
He's our only defender I recall an announcer mentioning during a non iows game!!

With the Fran favorite of Ulis and the SR Joe T, Bowen should be seeing Riley Mulvey type minutes next year.

A good passer/distributor with a mid range jumper and occasional three is exactly what Joe is. Too bad that apparently Fran is looking for something (or somebody) else in his PG

Boy is this board gonna freak when they find out Joe T is no longer starting..

I agree with you and posted similar thoughts on another thread. I doubt Fran takes him out just because he doesn’t like the kid or wants to intentionally lose the games.

Fran has proven he is incompetent as a recruiter and coach. A YMCA league hoops coach would recognize that Joe T. is their best option hands down at PG. Is Joe T. a great option? No, but he can do a lot of things with his quickness and is more capable of creating something out of nothing than Perkins, Ulis, or Jbo. Instead play Ulis, who somehow is $$ at the line and broke from the field.

I’ll tell you what frustrates me is our inability to ever get a decent shot at the end of the half or the end of a game. We end up throwing up a wild ass prayer of a shot if we get one at all.

Why we don’t set screens for our shooters is also disturbing. We should be setting screens for JBO or even double screens since he struggles to create on his own.

And that’s probably why your guy above is still a “YMCA league hoops coach.” :) Hyperboles aside, Fran is not a bad coach. He’s winning about 59% of his games. Lute won 64%. Ralph Miller, 54%. Alford, 58%. Dr. Tom, 52%. It’s hard to win at Iowa. If Iowa invested more on its HS sports, we could probably do better.

Frans offenses always score a lot of points because of early shots but they're never very good against a set defense in the half court.

I agree that Joe Toussaint needs to play more down the stretch. Joe scored a game winning basket against Virginia.

It's just one word....turnovers. Iowa's offense depends on not turning the ball over, while Joe T. does several things really well, he is loose with the ball.

You guys talk like he turns the ball over every time he touches the ball. He’s averaging just as many steals a game as he has turnovers a game. Also, he creates a lot of easy baskets on his assists. Like wide open dunks or layups. The thing that bugs me the most with him is that he doesn’t shoot more and that he picks up his dribble way to often and kills any offensive flow. Not sure why any player would ever pick up their dribble, especially in a fast paced offense like iowas.

You were correct until here. However he doesn't kill flow. Flow is killed when we sit and watch JBO and PMAC try to get open or dribble.
I could care less if he had 8 turnovers a game if he had 8 steals. I's sick of fran sitting him on the bench like he is incapable from learning from his mistakes, yet he watches his favorites do them time and time again.

Given the discussion on here about the lack of great PGs during McCaffery's term, I would say that fans on here are looking for somebody else as well. That said, JoeT has always been one of my favorites. Just wish he would harness that speed to score more.

You and I are in the same boat there. I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m a huge fan of Joe’s and feel like he is fully capable of being a scoring guard. He also passes players open more than anybody else. His pocket passes off of pick and rolls are a thing of beauty. He is seemingly the prototypical type of guard that Fran would want, but Fran restricts him more than any other player on the team, which is a real head scratcher

He averages the most TO's per 40 on the team at 3.2. Despite that, he should be playing down the stretch.

give the kid 30-35 mpg and see what he can do. At 30mpg his #’s would look something like 8ppg, 5.5apg, 3.3rpg, 2.5spg, 2.5to. While not eye popping, those are pretty solid, and very serviceable for a pg. Not to mention his defense is pretty darn good.

The other thing about Joe is, he’s just built different. He is a pitbull on defense and his speed is something that our opponents may only see in a couple of players per year. Let’s play the guys that can set us apart and create in close games.

You honestly don't think if he shot more he would sit? He's had games where he shot well and sat, missed shots and sat, sat just to sit. Fran makes 0 sense in how he uses/treats joe.

Oh trust me I’d be ok if he turned the ball over that much as well. I’m just saying he tends to pick up his dribble way to often and I’m not sure why he does it.

I agree, he should be playing a lot more, especially down the stretch. I can only assume Fran is worried about potential dumb turnovers and puts in guys that won't do that. However, those same guys can't do anything else.

Bingo! There have been at least 2 games I recall Joe playing really well, team is ahead, plays first 12ish min of 2nd half. Goes to bench and im thinking, yea good call Fran, get him a quick little break so he’s rested for end of game. Nope, sits the rest of the game. To be fair they did win both those games I believe. But it just sets the precedent for games like PSU where Fran just rolls with ulis to end the game regardless, he’s just made up his mind ulis is finishing it. It’s frustrating to watch, and i feel for Joe not being given the opportunity to close out games.

Nice hot take!! Tell me again what the record is since the switch? But you know more than Fran. Got it.

You saw Joe T. against Purdue right? If you can't see that Joe T., while not great, is exponentially better than Ulis on his best day and a better option than Jbo when not getting or making shots, then I am not sure what you have been watching all season.

I never said I know more than Fran, but I know that Ulis should see extremely limited PT and that Joe T. is a junk yard dog on defense.
