Mulvey With Four Minutes

Here's hoping he's redshirting...I'd hate to see him waste another year of eligibility for a few token minutes here and there. Maybe his skill set is more suitable for a lower conference?
I was really hoping to see him get around 10 minutes of playing time in this exhibition game to allow him to get comfortable and show us what he has.
Evidently Fran is not expecting to use him much this season...

Coming in early hasn't paid off for him.

Not saying Mulvey will turn out like Gabe Olaseni but Fran wasted a year of eligibility for Gabe. Gabe was playing great ball during his SR year and everyone could tell he was one year away from something special. He was a long-term project that needed one more year. His FR year he played in 18 games but only avg 5mins a game.

He's never been given that chance. If Josh is the chosen one, so be it. Just don't waste a year of eligibility just for a few minutes here and there....

Chosen one? Josh O has barely played, and Riley can't get past him. Honestly, neither have shown a lot up to this point, but at least Josh has shown to be useful in limited action against specific types of players.

Fran has said red-shirting is up to the player. He won't force anyone to red-shirt. So, Gabe wasted a year of Gabe's eligibility.

Now I'm just spitballin here, but maybe he just lacks the skills relative to others to garner the minutes?
So what are you insinuating, that maybe Riley is not skilled enough for the Big Ten?
You might be right. but getting 1 or 2 years out of your 4 years of eligibility is all Riley is looking for, then Iowa may be the place for him.
If basketball is not in his future after graduation, getting a great education is not a bad fallback.

Nope. You're going much broader. I'm suggesting that maybr he lacks the skills to garner more minutes on this team today. Could he be a better fit later or on another team is always possible.

What would suggest to you that Josh is the chosen one? Is it because he was Fran's big portal get?

I think you guys are making way to much here. As Jonesy says (if I'm reading it correctly) he's just not skilled enough. He's not good enough. Not sure what some of you expected. Not giving up on the guy but he's inexperienced and he's just not that good at this point. You can only play so many guys.

Or, let him use his eligibility and move on?

I was thinking along the same lines. If a kid is lacking in skill/talent, or more importantly, work ethic, why tie up the scholarship for an additional year?

If work ethic is the issue, what is more likely to spark a change -- the carrot of more playing time if you put in the work, or shutting it down for the year?

Redshirting can work in some circumstances, but it's highly overrated as a player development tool, IMHO.

I think for big guys like him its a little different. Les didnt do much for 4 years, but in his final year after those years of refinement he made good, and then got into the NBA for a while.

Riley has said he has worked hard to improve his game. How much more time does it take to switch the light on. Fran, the assistant coaches and trainers have been working with him since the beginning of summer. It's now the beginning of November and after a year and a half he still doesn't deserve considerable minutes and is behind Josh Ogundele. If he wants to graduate from Iowa, that's all well and good but what a waste of potential I saw in him in the minutes he got last year. Very disappointed.....

Could be he’s just not good enough. Maybe he’s working his ass off. Who knows?

From what I have seen of Mulvey (not much, last year), he wasn't ready yet. That doesn't include this year because that exhibition game was not really a forum for judging. He might be pushing Josh O in practice so unless he insists on redshirting, he should be available to play. He's an injury or 2 away from getting minutes so keep him ready.

Maybe the kid has a younger brother that's really good or another kid from the same high school and Fran wanted to get his foot in the door?

somebody has to be the 13th man on the roster...

Do other fan bases obsess over the 12th and 13th players on their team as much as Iowa fans do?
It’s a topic for discussion because he plays at a position that has very thin depth.

The reality is playing an unskilled unathletic big doesn't do much for a team anymore besides rebounding.

The majority of the teams on iowas schedule aren't running their offense through post players.

With the prevalence of 3pt shooting now there's a lot of space you have to cover on defense. You really want to have 5 guys who can defend outside the 3pt line to be effective.

Addie O'Grady may be wearing him out. He doesn't look like he has improved much.

Riley's other offers included Virginia Tech, Syracuse and Penn State. He was rated a 3 star.

I guess I was hoping we could use his 7 feet of height at least on the defensive side, especially for rebounding. After all, rebounding is more about effort. He doesn't need to be skilled enough on the offensive side because we have plenty of scorers. I hope we still can utilize him but the signs don't look good.

Fran, right now, probably only plays 9 of his 11 scholarship players. The issue is who backs up Filip/the 5 spot.

He's a year away. Big guys, really young too, need a lot of time. I fully expect him to play a little this season and then much more the next 2.

I think him and Josh will see more action than we think!

Agreed. I don't know that he'll ever be a starter, or a star. But by his Jr/Sr years, I'd think he'd be serviceable.

That said, he's an appropriate age for a college So. I mean, he's 20 yo. When he reclassified, he reclassified to his normal (for his age) class.
